If Julie were in the sequel, I don't know why they would announce Van Dyke's participation and not her's. She has likely declined the role written for her, and it was given to Angela Lansbury instead (Bedknobs and Broomsticks, anyone?). If I were to hazard a guess as to why Julie might have declined participation in the film, it's not unlikely that she thinks her presence would distract from Emily Blunt's performance.
One of the big differences between this movie and the original is that the 1964 film is a who's who of Disney character actors, while this movie has a lot more A-list actors.
I'm sure Julie will be back in some kind of role.....(maybe even as an older version of Mary herself)...I mean as if Meryl Streep, Angela Lansbury and the rest of the actors won't distract from Blunt's performance.... This movie will be epic because of all the talent in it
This is probably just wishful thinking, but something tells me they are saving the best casting announcement (Julie) for last. I can't see her turning down a small cameo. It's like if My Fair Lady is ever remade and she turned down a chance to play Mrs. Higgins or something!
I think it's likely they announce her participation later, or that they want it to be a surprise cameo, like it seems they are doing with Keira Knightley in the latest Pirates film.

Legendary actress Angela Lansbury has joined the cast of Disney’s upcoming sequel Mary Poppins Returns, playing a character named the Balloon Lady who wreaks helium havoc in the park during one of Mary Poppins’ outing with the Banks children. The character was introduced in Mary Poppins Comes Back, the second book in P.L. Travers’ series (where she was known as the Balloon Woman).

No, it was revealed in that press release, along with the actors who play the children. The cast is impressive. I just wish Julie Andrews has at least a cameo in the film like Dick Van Dyke.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who finds Miss Lansbury's casting in this ironic, especially since she was one of many actresses considered for the title role back when the first Mary Poppins was in production.

I was considering that as well as the fact that Angela Lansbury was in Bedknobs and Broomsticks, which is considered the Mary Poppins derivative and was used by Walt as the replacement film if he couldn't release Mary Poppins.

It looks so fresh and yet still recognizably as Mary Poppins. Love how her outfit has these little touches of art deco and fits the 20s-30s. Also that robin on her hat Sandy Powell did a good job I'm curious whether they will give her an umbrella or let her arrive with a kite like the second book....
She looks about what I expected, very stylish, very pretty. It makes me laugh a little about the talk that this new Mary will be more akin to the books-- she's already a little more whimsical and a little less practical than both Shepard's illustrations and Tony Walton's 1964 costumes.

Maybe it will have 2D animated segments. If the Enchanted sequel is going to have traditional animation, this one could have it too. Well, this film is not a direct sequel, they're reimagining it a bit, but I think there's still a possibility. It would be a nice touch.
They're currently filming it in London....instagram is full of images and movies.... And Mary looks quite different then on the earlier image....I dont like her hair, but it is in fashion with the 20s....
I don't like her hair either but maybe it'll look better when her whole face is visible.

Interesting that they're filming on location... I'd assumed they would be filming the whole thing on the sound stages at Shepperton Studios. Especially since modern live action Disney films seem to embrace an element of artificiality-- I mean, I'm sure the film with be CGI'd to death. That's another difference between the this movie and the original, which was shot entirely on the Disney soundstages.
Surely the new music and and songs are finished, right? If they've already begun filming? I can't wait to hear the new stuff, I love Shaiman and Wittman's work in "Hairspray."

yes I was thinking of that too. I really hope they just don't go there, seriously! I think Id rather not have animation in it at all then , though it probably will have CGI just for special effects.
and yes Im sure if it was gonna have hand drawn segments we would have heard something about it by now.
Aaaand we got our first frontal look of Emily...she doesn't remind me of Julie Andrews at all...it's a complete fresh look...even her umbrella looks different...personally I have to get used to it...
