I've used UK ebay and though it's not technically a guarantee of anything, normally a small holographic sticker supposedly guarantees it is a real copy.

Got Aladdin and Emperor's New Groove in that way, both used but seem to be in perfect condition otherwise. I haven't tried to use them which is the only slight dent since I might have been cheated without knowing!

I got Lilo & Stitch through a real seller and got both Dinosaur and Tarzan Region 1 sets from the same guy and both whilst had few marks at the time, seem to have emerged... still, doesn't seem bootlegged.

As for the other Platinums and non-Platinums, I'll wait until they get a decent edition on Blu-Ray. I just got those 'best of the rest' sets that people don't seem to price that high.

estefan wrote:Maybe I'm just being silly, but have you ever thought of being your Disney DVDs at an actual store? I see nothing wrong with purchasing them on eBay, but you're less likely to get a boot-leg copy if you buy a copy at Best Buy or Blockbuster or some other video retailer (I can't speak for Wal-Mart, though. ). Just something I'm curious about.
Estefan... Not all Disney DVD's are available at stores: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney_Vault

Being silly? No. Drunk may be a better word for it...

MJW wrote:I'm sorry to hear that you've had trouble with bootlegs on eBay, that really is a shame. I've seen posts before about others saying eBay was a dangerous place, but I never really understood why. I do a lot of buying and selling on eBay and so far I've never had an issue. Are most the problems with collector and/or OOP items? I've never bought something like that on eBay, and mostly just stick to the newer releases.
Thanks.

It's got to be because they're out of print. Somebody, somehow copies everything, makes their own discs and they get passed around from person to person and some seller on eBay ends up with it. Probably thinking it's a real copy. They sell it and... I have no idea how this happens. But I should have been wiser from the start. Used is the only way you're likely to get a real copy of an out-of-print Disney DVD. That's how I got the first Snow White and Sleeping Beauty sets and know they are the true Disney issues.

MJW wrote:I'd always thought a bootleg would be easy to spot right out of the gate, is this not the case? Are some bootlegs of such good quality that you would never be able to tell? I'm very critcal of things, so I'd always thought I'd be able to tell when something wasn't right.
Well, the first 2 Disney DVD's I bought were fakes. So...

Now there is an easy way to tell if they're fakes. Yes. You're probably right. All 4 of the fake Platinum Editions I got (Bambi, Cinderella, Lady, Mermaid) came in DVD cases where there is no flap-plate holder for the 1st disc. You know- a swinging door like thing you get in most 2-disc DVD sets that holds Disc 1? You turn it over and disc 2 is attached to the back side. The 4 I got come in matching cases with the discs on both walls. I'll post a picture if I can... or I'll draw one on Paint.

Image

Crude I know, but that's what they look like.

http://reviews.ebay.com/Fake-copy-or-bo ... 0001723153

This guy did a guide but only 2 out his 6 or so examples describe the discs I got. The colors on the disc cover art for Bambi and Lady and the Tramp are horrendous. They're very ugly. And he mentioned the covers being square-edged instead of round. The paper thing, you know, that they stick in the... you know what I mean. The edges are rounded but the print is very faded or dark.

http://reviews.ebay.com/Bootleg-Disney- ... 0001630261

I found another person with a guide. But there again, there's not much info that applies to me. Except one thing: except for Lady and the Tramp and Fantasia, all the sellers I bought from had that thing that says "12 sold of" like "40 available." That's a good tip. I should have been wary of that. The ones I got were very close forgeries. They all had inserts. They were well-printed. The bottoms of the discs looked silver. There were no real obvious signs that they were fakes. None that seemed dead giveaways to me.

I hate people selling fakes! I usually can tell by the price they are asking for a "Brand New/Factory Sealed" dvd...like, for exemple, when I was looking for Snow White PE I found one asking 15 dollars...which obviously means FAKE! ;)

I started collecting the animated movies three months ago (may) and got them all from Ebay....brand new...factory sealed...and all with slipcover (so far). I only had one problem now with Peter Pan, it arrived opened and was clearly not BRAND NEW, so I had to send it back and unfortunately never got my money back from the seller. But other than that, great dealings with almost every seller I purchased from. If you want a brand new, sealed Bambi or Snow White, don't expect to pay 20 dollar or less, unless you get lucky at an auction. :)

I paid around 2000 dollars in three months time for around 35 disney animated dvds...and worth it...

ALL the PE....incl Gift Sets from Lion King, Aladdin and Cinderella...Little Mermaid 4 Disc Trilogy Set and Beauty And The Beast, Snow White and Bambi in Display Boxes...very nice. And many more...

I am so glad I finally decided to start collecting these. Some dvds come with the slipcover a bit dented due to poor packaging, but still...

I could recommend some sellers from ebay, if that's allowed on here?

its not just ebay that you have to watch. i was looking at buying several vault movies from a site called dingodvds. they had the first beauty and the beast dvd for $20AUD. locally, the original dvd release will sell for upwards of $100NZD on the secondary market. so i added that and a couple of others to my basket, but then decided to google. seems several people have bought from that site and been sold rip offs. also, a number of people have said its connected to an asian bootleg site called panda.

dingo looks like a legit website, with nothing to arouse suspicion except the cheap prices.

I always go to f.y.e. to buy discontinued Disney DVD titles because they always have their used DVD in great condition. Sometimes they have DVDs from Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection and Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection.

Used Disney DVD under $20.00 (That I seen on f.y.e.)
Peter Pan: Platinum Edition ($14.99)
Return to Neverland ($10.00)
Bambi: Platinum Edition ($14.99)
Bambi II ($14.99)
Lady and the Tramp: Platinum Edition ($14.99)
Lady and the Tramp 2 ($14.99)
The Lion King 1.5 ($15.99)
Sleeping Beauty: Special Edition ($15.99)

More than $20.00
The Lion King: Platinum Edition ($24.99)
Beauty and the Beast: Platinum Edition ($26.99)
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs: Platinum Edition ($35.99)

I always check to see if they have The Lion King 2: Special Edition, Tarzan: Collector's Edition, and The Emperor's New Groove: Collector's Edition but no luck on finding these titles.

2 fairly trustworthy buys and one more risky eBay order this time. The seller seems to be very prominent and basically trustworthy. And I'm getting this used, so... that should be a good sign. It says Like New and the seller says it's in MINT condition. If it's not, I'm getting my damn money back. That's for sure. All of it!

My 22nd, 23rd, and 24th Disney DVD's will be...

The seller has a questionable reputation at best, but it's a totally in-print DVD, the price was low enough, it sells from the next state over (so I'll get it by the end of the week), and the person has an actual picture of the DVD sitting down instead of a "stock photo." So, I saw that it had actual slipcover and was actually factory sealed. I feel more than 95% confident that this will turn out alright. If it's that bad, I'll send it back for full refund. It won't take long. It never has before.

Yep, all of them, and I only bought them in stores. I'm very reluctant about buying stuff on the internet, especially 'used' items, like you did with your dvd's. With good reason, seeing you have to replace at least 4 dvd's.

Edited: I counted them wrong. I have 24 of Disney's DAC's, and Mary Poppins and Who framed Roger Rabbit.

You mean the last I bought or the DAC that was produced last? The last I bought were The Black Cauldron and The Great Mouse Detective together. The most recent DAC I have on dvd is also the last produced, The Princess and the Frog.

Well people, I was wrong... I've sorta been burnt again by counterfeiting. The Aristocats I was sent is a clear fake and damn it, even though it's not an OOP title, I should have been wary of the feedback from people saying he was selling counterfeit DVD's. (Of course their's were all "Bambi"s and "Cinderella"s. OOP DVD's).

Well, I'll tell ya... I'm so glad it was Aristocats and not Dumbo. My Dumbo was 100% real! And not in too bad condition either.

So, this will be the first counterfeit I'm sending back and if he doesn't refund me, I'll be reporting him!

UPDATE:
I've received a refund so far of $10.00 - which is all but the shipping. I'm going to try to get the other $3.00 back later. (Ha- 13... should have known that number would be unlucky)

Oh, I'm gonna save that as a backup.

I'm definitely going to report him to eBay. Once I find out how. Someone else in his feedback said they reported him for their counterfeit and they got a refund too. I want this scum gone and two people who sent me counterfeits in the past are gone now. Maybe more.

Just need to find out how. Soon as I get my refund AND put up negative feedback on his page, I'll report him. I expect he'll want to give me a refund because I sent him a message saying I would report him if he didn't refund me. And I'm going to report him anyway. But I want to wait 'til after I get refunded first.

Giving The Aristocats another try... This eBayer is what eBay calls a Top Seller and they have a 100% positive feedback record except for 2 Neutrals in 1 entire year. And with a score of 11844... That's pretty impressive. I think this will turn out alright. The copy I got says it's brand new.

My 25th Disney DVD will (hopefully) be...

No, Cinderella, much like Ariel, wanted to explore a new world she didn't know, see all the beautiful, amazing things in it, in the palace, become a respected person there, a free person, free from servitude. Like Ariel wanted freedom from rules and a mermaid life. Cinderella even wanted to go dancing like Ariel says "Legs are required for jumping, dancing" and even is seen enjoying dancing with Eric. So while some of the other princess', like Ariel, ways of getting their dreams was more girl power, Cinderella's dreams were as girl power as theirs.
