The Fantasia films will be out October.

Batab will hit theaters in FEB and be out on dvd/bluray in March

The reason so is Rapunzel is out in in the holiday season and they dont want BATAB Vs Rapunzel in the fall

That makes absolutely no sense. Rapunzel is coming out December 2010, Beauty and the Beast would be on Blu-Ray in October. It's the exact same time difference between Snow White and Princess and the Frog. They have a great marketing opportunity to promote the new film on the old one, like they are doing with the 6 minute preview for TPatF on the Snow White Blu-Ray.

I have confirmation from somebody at Disney that Beauty and the Beast isn't coming to Blu-Ray until the Fall. Also, why would they release it on Blu-Ray less than a month after it's theatrical release? Nobody would pay the $13 to see it in 3D if they know they can own it in a few weeks for a few more bucks.

oh my gosh they did! does this mean that it really isn't ready yet and that we've gotten our hopes up for nothing? all i can say is that this better be released or I'm gonna flip out.

and yes my guess is this is true.. and i think that beauty and the beast is coming in march so that rapunzel's doll can be released in the winter instead of belle.

I can't imagine that it isn't ready yet, since I saw 15 minutes of it earlier this month at the D23 Expo. If the release date was changed or canceled, it would have more to do with Dick Cook being fired than anything.

Also, Rapunzel's doll wouldn't be released in the winter because that's when the film hits theaters. The dolls come with the home entertainment releases, so the 17-inch limited edition Rapunzel doll shouldn't be expected until Spring 2011. Again, I got confirmation from a Disney Store executive at the Expo that the next two are Tiana in the Spring and Belle in the Fall.

I know it is unusual for Disney to put next Fall's trailer on this Fall's release, but I think the decision to do so was to cross promote both the 3D theatrical release and the Blu-Ray release. In the past, the flier has said which title will be Spring and which is Fall. This time, they intentionally left it ambiguous. Based on what I heard at the D23 Expo, I still say that Fantasia is the Spring release and Beauty and the Beast is in the Fall.

I'm about to take a bite of humble pie and admit that it appears that I was wrong. I just talked to somebody who knows somebody at Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and I didn't like what they had to say. Now I must repeat, this is a guy who knows a guy, so it shouldn't be taken as exactly what is going on, but this sounds reasonable.

Dick Cook was the guy who let Don Hahn remaster Beauty and the Beast in 3D and who gave it the funding it needed for a theatrical release. Now that he has left the studio, there weren't many supporters of 3D rereleases left (hinting that this is probably the last year to catch The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D). So it appears that one of the first things done at the studio since his dismissal was to CANCEL the theatrical 3D rerelease of Beauty and the Beast.

With the theatrical release no longer a conflict for the Home Entertainment division, they were free to rearrange the schedule. The real reason for switching Beauty and the Beast to Spring was to spend more time on Fantasia's restoration. While this is great news for Fantasia, it sounds like it's going to be really bad news for Beauty and the Beast. My source tells me that now this release is being rushed in such a way that there won't be much new in the way of bonus features.

In addition, my friend heard that they weren't planning many new bonus features for Fantasia because it would be a 2-disc Blu-Ray, with disc 1 being the original film and all of the previous bonus features for that film, and disc 2 being Fantasia 2000 and all of the previous bonus features for that film. While both films had great releases before, it's still sad to hear that they aren't planning new bonus features for the set. This should also come as a disappointment to those who expected a 2-disc set for each film.

So that seems to be the state of things to come in terms of Diamond Editions in 2010. Like I said, I'm not happy about what I heard, but the good news is that both Beauty and the Beast and Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 had great sets previously, so at least we should get those bonus features on the new releases.

While they didn't do too much marketing to let the general public know about the release, I was still surprised to see how small attendance was for the presentation at the D23 Expo for the 3D release. They had a discussion panel with Don Hahn, Paige O'Hara, Glenn Keane, Gary Trousdale, Kirk Wise, and the guy who has been working on making the film 3D (I forget his name). During the presentation they showed from the beginning of "Belle" to Maurice's capture by the Beast. Then they showed the musical sequence "Beauty and the Beast" all in 3D and Don Hahn said that they were almost done and that it would be coming in February. Unfortunately, less than 500 people were in the room to see the presentation. It may have been because there were so many other great presentations going on, but I have a feeling it had to do with a general lack of interest in the release, which could be part of Disney's decision to pull the plug on it.

So, I thought about it, and it'd really be kinda stupid to cancel the 3D rerelease. They've already spent a lot of money on the restoration/3Dization, and with the proper advertising (like the Toy Story Double Feature), this could get people pumped to go see a film in theaters that they've seen a million times at home. All of my friends are pumped for both rereleases, and we're freakin' teenagers. Think about people who went to see the film as kids and want to take their kids to see it in theaters. Disney will be stupid to cancel this rerelease. End of statement.

Perhaps if the Toy Story 3D Double Feature makes a lot of money they will change their minds, but according to my friend, all support of the 3D release of Beauty and the Beast went out the door when Dick Cook left.

I think the general appeal of 3D has started to wane for a lot of people. When Disney first did The Nightmare Before Christmas in 3D in 2006, it made $8 million on not that many screens because it was a big deal at the time. The next year, with more digital screens throughout the country, it brought in $14 million. Flash to last year, after it was released on DVD and Blu-Ray, it only made $1 million, and that was on more screens than it previously had. If a cult classic like Nightmare can't bring in the money anymore with 3D rereleases, it should be clear why the executives had little faith in this one to begin with.

We live in a time where if an animated film is CG, it's also going to be in 3D. Box offices have been flooded with 3D animated films since 2006 and I honestly think the words "In 3D" don't have the same appeal anymore as they did even a year ago. On top of that, 3D films are more expensive because they charge you for the glasses. So for a family of 4 to go see the Toy Story double feature, it's going to cost about $15 per adult and $10 per child with the glasses. That's $50 to see two films that most people already own and in this economy, those that don't own it might realize that if they wait for the next home entertainment release, it will cost them about the same to be able to watch them whenever and however many times they want.

I was really looking forward to the 3D release and was really impressed with what I saw. I'm really sad to hear that it isn't happening anymore.

Yeah....the reason they didn't pull the plug on Woody (no political pun intended) in 3D is because its done and they have done too much advertising on this to pull back....its ashame that Beauty and the Beast won't be released in theaters in 3D at this point....at this point i'd settle for a limited 2 week release in select few theaters......but maybe it costs them more to make the rest of the film 3D than it would to put it in the greenlight...

And also guys remember....just because it isn't being done now is not to say it never will be......or visa versa.....

The whole point is that I wanted to see it on the Blu Ray after the remastering boys at Disney had brought it up to HD visual standard - if I want to watch in regular definition I already have it on the original Platinum Edition standard!!

Actually for one of the first times, I'm going to be on Marky's side.

This news comes as a shock to me since Disney has spent the time and resources to make it happen, but i'm not upset by it at all. Maybe it's because I never saw any of the footage of it done, but I didn't see how being in 3D would benefit the film. I don't think the story or beauty of the animation would have necessarily been lost, but it would have looked very pop-up book in my minds eye.

I'm also ok with have BatB in the spring and Fantasia's in the fall. I always thought it was silly to assume that a Princess film would sell better in the fall because it's closer to christmas. They'll sell no matter when you release them. I hate that it sounds like BatB is going to get a skimpy release. That's simply unacceptable due to it popularity, and that it's a Diamond Edition. If it gets a recycled release it completely discredits the Diamond Collection already. It wouldn't make any sense for Fantasia to get a skimpy release though. If they say they are doing this to give it a better restoration, then they have a lot more time to make new special features for it. A lot more than they originally had. On top of that they aren't trying as hard on BatB's release and have the funding for those special features. There is not good excuse to go cheap on both of these releases.

Bad news, isn't Fantasia Disney's longest Feature Animated movie? I just don't understand why movies half the length get a disc for the feature and a disc for the extras but Fantasia gets crammed all on one disc. I really hope your friend is wrong about this as I know Blu-ray can hold a lot of information but put too much on there a quality will suffer. This goes double for the DVD versions that will definitely suffer in quality. Dumbo is around 60 min and gets 2 discs. Fantasia is around 125 min and gets 1 disc. Which one was Diamond and supposed to be the highest quality?

I don't expect it to do that well. None of the 3D equipped theaters around me are showing it, I'm really bummed out, and my only thought is the 3 hour run time and lack of newness must be scaring them off. They all seem to be holding onto Meatballs instead as I guess the short run time and newness will probably attract more people (you can't blame them when they only have one 3D equipped theater).

Well what he told me was specifically about the Blu-Ray and Blu-Ray can hold a lot of standard definition material without impacting the quality of the film itself. A good example is Warner's upcoming release of The Wizard of Oz, which has the film plus 2-DVD discs worth of bonus material all on disc 1. Fantasia/Fantasia 2000 was a 3-disc DVD set, so putting each film on 1 disc in HD and then the SD bonuses that pertain to each on the same disc won't actually hurt the quality of the film. However, if they were to retain all of the bonuses on the DVD version, they would want to make it a 3-disc set.

Also, Dumbo has not been confirmed to be a 2-disc Blu-Ray. The add says "First time on Blu-Ray and 2-disc DVD." The Nightmare Before Christmas was a 2-disc DVD, but the Blu-Ray was a single disc that held all of the bonus material in addition to the film. The reason is because many of the bonus features were in SD.

Disney is becoming lazy with their Platinum/Diamond Editions already? That is fast. Regardless of how good the additional material on the previous editions was (both Fantasia movies and Beauty and the Beast) would it really kill them to add something new and worthwhile on the discs? Thanks, for the pic BTW, disney is sooo slick, if i didn't know better, i would think that would be a DVD copy, well they are a business and this really shows as them really pushing the format to make more money, it''s obvious , i'm still getting the book edition,which has blu-ray, but still this is not right, "tricking" consumers even though i am in favor of buying the blu-ray, i feel bad for people who still want the DVD copy...
