<3<3<3 That Japanese trailer is fantastic!!!!!!!!!! Oh, I wish they were marketing the film like that over here!!! Beautiful.
In "When Will My Life Begin", it sounds like she sings "five a.m.", to me, at least, but the word booklet says "seven a.m."...?

Re: Tangled
Thank you in advance for saying that. It bugs me too.PatrickvD wrote:And that matters because? I never said that dated language or speech is a problem. Quite the contrary. And Rapunzel sounds exactly like most girls today, not sure what you're hearing? Also, dear Jackoleen, stop writing tedious essays.Jackoleen wrote:Dear Disney Enthusiasts,
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, PatrickyD, but, like the lingo of too many teen girls today, Rapunzel's lingo is outdated beyond belief!
Thanks in advance for ignoring my request and continuing to write them anyway.
I know everyone is allowed to type the way they want but 'Dear Disney Enthusiasts'?
C'mon.

The Japanese trailer is lovely! We even get to see that shot one review said looked silly–Rapunzel's hair glowing underwater? Looked fine to me.
I think it's a bit too dramatic to work well for American audiences (the soaring, dramatic music over… Rapunzel's hair being braided, interesting…)–pretty much every other culture takes animation more seriously than we do, sadly, although I would love to see something like it over here.

I hope so!!
WOW!! That trailer just left me speechless! I mean it's kind of showing a completely different movie than what the other trailers and ads are showing. It's kinda saying that it will be humorous but there's also a dark, serious edge to it.
Why is it that Japanese marketing is more accurate to Disney movies than the US? First A Christmas Carol and now this! Clearly at least a couple of them should be in charge of the company. They seem to understand more about Disney then...well, Disney.

I can not imagine the amount of work that it must take to animated all those strands of hair. That is really cool.
It's also nice we get to see footage of one of the characters singing (not counting Rapunzel's "Sound of Music" bit in the Japanese trailer.)
And I know this is kind of changing the topic, but I knew she was going to be pinching her cheeks on "cause I wuv you." I predicted two things this year: Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar and now this.
In regards to the popiness of "When Will My Life Begin" just think back to how the title song of Phantom of the Opera kinda stood out from the rest of the songs. It was the only song in that movie to not have music fitting with the time period and had that disco sound to it. Now I know it's for different reasons than this, but I'm just pointing out a "Way back when" kind of thing because it really isn't all that new for a song to sound different from the rest.

She would never talk like a typical teenager because she wouldn't be exposed to anyone other than Gothel. She should talk like a bubbly, excitable, vivacious young woman because that is who she is, but she should not use popular 2010 teenage talk.phan258 wrote:
Also, goodness gracious people, you'd think Rapunzel was walking around going "that's wiggity whack, yo" with the way you're carrying on. She's got no class because she says "like" and "freak out?" Settin' the bar pretty high, aren't you? Especially for an excitable, bubbly, vivacious young woman! She's being in character.
It's just my opinion. I don't think it makes her "classless", but I don't think it fits well in the movie. That is the same problem I have with "When Will My Life Begin". It is a gorgeous song, and could have been made to be more proper to the period, but they made it sound like a "pop" version that should be for the ending credits. Mandy sings it beautifully, but she is singing with a "pop" color to it. Her speaking voice has a "pop" color to it too. It is not JUST the words she uses.
And the problem becomes that she sounds like a stereotypical 2010's teenager who lives in High School Musical, Glee, or iCarly. But she is not a stereotypical teenager and certainly not a "pop" culture stereotypical teen.
You and I are just going to have to agree to disagree I guess, because she IS being in character. Gothel is not exactly the most "proper" speaker in the world-- "Mumsy?" "Dummy?" etc. I'm sure she's given Rapunzel plenty of examples of slang, aside from allllll those books the girl reads....and like I said before, since the target audience for this movie is children, Rapunzel needs to be a girl little kids, especially little girls, can relate to.
You said something before about her being "too real"---that has to be the first time I have ever heard someone complain that a fictional character is too realistic. That sense of "she could be an actual person you could meet in real life" is what EVERY storyteller strives for! Whether or not you like that person is up to you, but I'll never understand how making a character too lifelike and easy to relate to could ever be less than amazing.
That Japanese trailer is awesome!

Yeah, that Japanese trailer was really good (just for the Rapunzel and Gothel scenes).
I'm still kind of on the fence about Mandy Moore. (this isn't about the modern lingo that some others were talking about). Here, I liked her for the most part, and her voice went along with Rapunzel's child-like character pretty well, but it seems mixed. That one part where she's going, "I've been looking out this window for 18 years," she just sounds way too old and it doesn't gel with her childish voice in other scenes. Even in some of those scenes, it comes across as if she's trying too hard to be a vivacious young girl. Maybe it'll be better in the actual film.
I still haven't listened to the music, and won't listen before I see it in theaters, so I can't give an opinion on her there (although I don't have any expectation that she'll be up to Benson, Egan, or Salonga standard). But I can't wait to see this movie. It comes out next Tuesday, right? I'll probably go see it after my internship.
(And then see it again when I'm going out with some friends the next weekend)

Listening to most often lately:

I loved that trailer as well. You'll also get to see a bit of Rapunzel as a toddler. She's so cute.Tristy wrote:WOW!! That trailer just left me speechless! (Sorry. I don't know how to embed video here, right now.)
Pretty damn epic if you ask me, and with plethora of new footage to boot. The video itself is pretty low quality, though.

WOW!
The Japanese trailer makes it seem like an entirely different movie. I'm actually more enthusiastic about the whole project now. The European trailers were crap, the US trailer was crap, but this one's actually really good. The animation looks great, especially for CGI, much better than anything Dreamworks has put out this year. I'm looking forward to reading all the reviews to see if it's really as good as it seems to be. This does have the potential to be a blockbuster for the holiday season, provided that it sticks around long enough. Though the large production budget is worrisome to the overall profit Disney is looking for (probably 400 million at the very least).
