Definitely not the CGI ones put out so far, I can tell you that. And if I had to pick a live-action movie... Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, I guess?

But this is getting off-topic. I'm just hoping that this time the animation of Moana will be something much more special and abstract that actually tries to break out of the norm of being the same tired CGI and starts leaning more towards the qualities of 2D art. Either that or just do hand-drawn animation in the first place, but if Disney wants to be stubborn then I suppose "painterly CGI" and 2D/CG hybrid animation could be the next best thing.

I meant from the hand drawn animated canon, though. But, oh well.
But this is getting off-topic.
Sorry, I was just curious. Sometimes the discussions gets off-topic to an extent.

Don't worry about it. I'm just trying my best not to get off-topic myself, on account of my well-known history of heavy Anti-CGI rants.

So when they say that Moana will be in a "painterly style" in CG, will it look like this?

Or this?

Well I thought the 2nd one looked good when I watched a clip of it in full animation on YouTube, so hopefully something like that. But then again, Disney could end up doing an exact repeat of what they did with that film when we heard it would be in a special style of animation and the final product dropped it entirely. By now I know not to fully trust the Disney studio anymore to not stab me in the back in some way. Not when they go around promising us a revival of hand-drawn animation that they don't intend to keep and then convert hand-drawn projects like Frozen into computer animation instead.

Because Disney wanted to be lazy.

Actually, I think it has to do with the fact the movie was going through a major development hell. Animation wise, 'Rapunzel Unbraided' looked gorgeous. If what was heard about the original concept was true, though, the plot wouldn't have been as great.

Well in the end of the day, I still say that Tangled ruined Disney animation at a time when they should have been focused on revitalizing their own art of 2D animated features, and that it's existence completely jeopardized hand-drawn's revival.

Tangled was the worst thing to ever happen in the history of the Disney studio.

We even saw the original concept and it was a really bad Shrek like knock off.

And thanks to the final movie, Disney animated features are now Pixar knock offs.

Words cannot describe how glad I am that Disney caught this mistake on their own, even before they bought Pixar.

Actually, I'd love to see the first minute of that previz in a Disney film, with that exact same art style.

It actually bothers me. I mean, although I loved Tangled, it was the most needlessly expensive animated film because of how much Disney spent on unused footage for earlier versions of the story. Then, they seemingly threw it all away. If they are never going to make a film that looks like what Rapunzel Unbraided would have looked like, then they've seemingly spent all that money for nothing. That's pretty stupid, both from a business and creative perspective. :-|

...unless Moana completely surprises me and actually looks like a moving painting.

Although I wouldn't mind a painterly style myself, I grew to like Rapunzel's final design, more than her previous designs. Though I was dissapointed over Tangled's generic CGI look. The best thing would've been to transfer that design into the painterly look.

And it would've surprised me if "Moana" actually ended up having the painterly look! But let's hope and see...

I love the look of the vis dev footage in the beginning too! But then it hits San Fran and it all goes to hell with the stupid modern music! and the premise was lame, Rapunzel gets turned into a squirrel and some modern day girl get turned into rapunzel, wasnt it? :?

Agreed. At least it had a creative variation of the Walt Disney Pictures logo, before Disney got stuck with the CGI castle.

I don't like having to look at Rapunzel's butt-ugly CG face myself. I'm certain that the painted style animation would have helped make the characters look much more visually appealing, like Meander did for the characters in Paperman.

Of course, I still think the most guaranteed way that the characters would have looked good is if they were hand-drawn. People may argue that it couldn't be hand-drawn cause of the hair, but how do you know that? They probably could have done what they did with Silver in Treasure Planet and have only the hair be CGI.
