Um, no it's *not* racist. I asked about ten of my friends and some family members just to make sure I hadn't unintentionally been using a racist word for the past 22 years. They all looked at me like I was crazy. I really don't know where you guys got the notion that mulatto is a racist term. It really isn't.

That's what I said before: just because people grew accustomed to using it and didn't feel bad about it, does *not* mean it isn't racist.

No wonder I had no idea. I've always lived in areas that are predominantly Hispanic.

Most of you guys may not consider it "PC" but, like I said, we don't look at it as a derogatory word. There is absolutely nothing wrong or negative with the word in my culture.

So that explains where the discrepancy is.

Probably same content that Blacks are using the word nigger or "nigga" among their own race.

I'm not really trying to prove anything, I was just pointing out how it says that in the United States it's preferred that the term isn't used and that while yes, I do live in USA, I've lived in predominantly Hispanic areas where the word isn't negative in any way.

In my innocense I always thought that that 'M' word meant nothing more than mixture of black and white parentage. I guess "mestizo" (offspring of Spaniard and American Indian) must also be regarded as offensive.

Sorry, I know that I posted in this thread before, but because there are so many replies, I missed this (which is the reason for this whole "OMG! Racism!" discussion. Let me give everyone a little exposé on the topic of that article's providers...

Talk about the guilty dog barking the loudest. The Daily Mail is a complete and utter load of bollocks. To be honest, I often feel disgusted over the fact that I'm British - and things like that are the cause. The Daily Mail are a crappy tabloid who pass themselves off as a mid-way point between tabloid and broadsheet. The fact is that they are run by absolute nutcases, whose idea of Britain is in my opinion comparable to Adolf Hitler's dream-Germany; white, middle-class and conservative; homosexuals and anything than good Protestants a no-no; anybody even ever so slightly left of centre being dubbed a Soviet. What's more is that it's often full of closet racism and xenophobia, which they dress up in hysterics and worthiness as a desire to save a "Britain in decline." Look at this front page, and you'll get what I mean:



Interesting how they show the British citizens as being a perfect white family, whereas the "immigrants" are all ugly men hanging on street corners who simply need a good wash.

I'm going to link you to the last two or so parts of this British documentary on Philip Pullman (author of His Dark Materials). The guy at the beginning of this clip may seem at first to be a defender of civil liberties, but really, you can see after a while that he's only interested in his own right-wing opinions. They're simply making themselves look progressive, but underneath are most certainly not. This article is another example. I think this article on The Princess and the Frog was written due to them having a problem with introducing black characters and for the idea of a mixed-race relationship. To be honest, the comment on The Jungle Book (which they dated wrong by three years - hardly professional journalism) is something that I've never heard or thought of, and it looks like somebody got that idea from having an assignment to watch every Disney classic and nit-pick it.

Seriously, don't waste your time reading that garble. The main reason why that article was written was probably due to the journalist's innate displeasure of the thought of a mixed-race marriage being shown to children. Let's just get back on the topic of how pretty Tiana's dress looks and not bothered about some sad losers.

But I actually did hear the black community complain that a black prince wasn't good enough or something, befpre we saw any pictures of him, because apparently the prince for Tiana really was white, I think it was from the casting call or some other written info. Wasn't he going to be from England, and he came to the 1920's because he loved Jazz? I thought someone said it sounded more historically accurate, or maybe that was with a Hispanic prince.

I would like things to be more historically correct as they are setting this in a clearly defined real place and time and they obviously are, or were striving for history in this film, and I heard a Hispanic prince made more sense loving Jazz and going to New Orleans. So a Hispanic prince would be great.

But what can I say, I think the first black prince should get to be introduced with the first black princess. Maybe Maldonia kind of solves the problem by making his background unclear. He could be black or Hispanic? Still...with that whole "lighter skin preference" brought up in concern by a black adult on this forum, I'd like the black prince to look black, if he's supposed to be.

enigmawing, that's very nice. It IS a really neat dress. I joke about it looking too much like a lily pad, but I always thought it was a cute idea and executed pretty well. For me, it just serves to show that I REALLLLY think they should be using that dress more instead of the pseudo-Chinderella gown.
