It says "Now playing in select theaters, opens everywhere on June 17th." So what does that mean? It will play everywhere in theaters all over the world or it will play in all theaters all over the US? That would be cool if it plays where I'm at. I'd probably go see it multiple times.

If it does play in all theaters on June 17th, IT TOOK LONG ENOUGH. I've been a big Miyazaki fan ever since I saw Warriors of the Wind (nausica) in the 80s. That was the first I saw.

I'm not sure but I think it expands to [gasp] 200 theatres next week.

I picked up a couple of free passes for a preview showing last night, and I went with my 70 year-old mom, who is a huge Miyazaki fan, and she likes quite a bit of other anime, as well. We met a couple of my friends at the theater.

I did notice that it had been changed quite a bit from the original book, and there were moments that didn't seem to be explained adequately in the film. I loved the film, although I didn't care for the extreme anti-war message that was added.

Hisaishi Joe did a marvelous job on the music, as usual.

Would you prefer a pro war message?

Actually, I thought the anti-war message was the most endearing thing about the film. There were many truths included.

guys i have not seen any previews for this movie, it was mentioned briefly on entertainment tonight for about 2 seconds. where are the promos for this movie for wider release on june 17th? i haven't seen any trailers on tv, has anyone seen it? maybe i missed it, i don't know if it'll play in my area.

do people know about this movie or even care who made it? i don't understand how disney is going for wider release when most people don't even know who miyazaki is. there should be trailers playing on tv, i haven't seen any, has anyone?

I haven't seen any ads for Howl then again I don't watch that much TV. Do you consider 200 theatres a wide release? Sharkboy & Larva Girl gets more ads & screens than Howl.

I just got done watching a fan sub that my cousin had... *sigh*
The movie is gorgeous, I loved it. I seriously hope Miyazaki will make at least one more film though.

I consider any release of miyazaki movies in theaters exciting, at least it's playing, but I'm wondering how well it will do without some sort of promotion. The only trailers I see are on the net or mixed in with previews of other movies you see in theaters.

Why wouldn't he make another one? Has he given up on animation?

There was an article about Miyazaki (when princess mononoke was out) that he is getting old and he's hand shakes a little when he animates. After princess mononoke was finished, he felt exhausted and didn't have the energy like he used to.
I'm sure he will continue to create stories, but he may have to have less involvement with the animation, kinda sad but it's reality.

Yeah, since when was an extreme anti-war message a bad thing? I mean, this is a Miyazaki film, so I highly doubt it's that conspicuous to the point of liberal propoganda (the opposite of art). I would rather have children exposed to an extreme dose of pro-peace then even a drop of pro-war.

What do you mean by "opposite of art"?

I was wondering, is this movie all done in 3D with the toon shader effect on it to make you believe it's done in cell animation? The reason I ask is because I rented the new Appleseed anime the other day and the animation appears to be done all in 3D with the toon shaders added on to it (seems like that's what most animation studios are going for these days, all digitial, not sure about Disney). I read somewhere Spirited Away was supposed to be the last Miyazaki animation combing 3D and traditional 2D cell animation and his movies after that is supposed to be all done in 3D with toon shaders. I thought I saw a similar technique with Spiderman animation on MTV.

I think Dragonbooster is all 3D too, with toon shader effect on it.

I just got back from the midnite showing. Miyazaki totally changed the story in the novel. I actually prefer the novel. I also like the Miyazaki vision too. I actually enjoyed the antiwar message in the film.

So, was it bad he changed story from the novel?

It opened yesterday in a theater downtown, so I took my little brother to see it and we both loved it. I personally thought it was better than Spirited Away and the audience seemed to respond more to this film. When I saw SA, I didn't hear one person laugh and didn't feel anybody else gripping the edge of their seat. With this one, people laughed a lot and I saw people sit up straight during the climax. I think part of the reason this film is so charming is that the main character is an old woman for most of the film, there is a love theme that was laking in SA, and the story's settings are all over the place, as opposed to being locked in a spirit bath house. If you have the opportunity, you should definatley go see it. I can't wait til the DVD release. I wish it was coming in August with wave 3!

I think Disney wants to release the DVD in February to help campaign for the movie for the 2006 Animated Feature Film Oscar. By releasing the film during preliminary voting, it ensures voters will remember it and more than likely vote for it. It's a tried and true method. :)
