Yeah, I wouldn't say it was a gamble at all. Tangled was more of a gamble at the time it was released--it was the first Disney musical in CGI, and they probably weren't quite sure how audiences would respond to it considering that PATF was not a runaway success the year previous.
With Frozen, they were clearly aiming for the same audience as Tangled. Before Frozen was released, I was hoping it would be a huge hit and hit like $300 million+ domestic, but my realistic (but still optimistic) expectations were between $200-250 million. Most box office sites were predicting around $180-200 million. That it blew way past my "outlandish" hopes was definitely a surprise.
Personally, I think it started off strong because of the goodwill from Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph (plus Tangled really built up an audience on home video). From there, people just responded to it very well, and then the rest is history.

I agree, Tangled and Wreck It Ralph gave general audiences faith in Disney again with the quality. Also, the music was a major key in the success. Neither Princess and the Frog nor Tangled's songs were as popular as Frozen. Songs like "Let It Go" and "Do You Want To Build a Snowman?" are pretty much beloved songs that will go down as classics.

People are saying this now, but looking back on old Frozen threads, we were as nervous as anything and didn't really think all that big of it.Warm Regards wrote:^ Was it really a big gamble, though?
I mean, not accounting the fact that they hastily made the switch from hand-drawn to CG, or that they switched from Alan Menken to the Lopezes (which, in my opinion, was their means of playing safe), Frozen was expected to do so well.
Firstly, they market it as "From the makers of Tangled." And people liked Tangled, so that got the crowds in.
Secondly, snow or no snow, people like to see a move during the holidays that reflects on the "ideal" Winter environment.
Thirdly, 2013, in personal opinion, was an AWFUL year for animation. Very few original films that struck me in the heart (pun intended). Frozen was flawless in comparison to most other films. (It wasn't, it just seemed like that.)
Though I will admit that almost no one can see their film making a billion.
Except maybe James Cameron.
Let's not get started on the whole CGI/ Olaf thing.
