Has the home-release department changed at all the past few years?TheSequelOfDisney wrote:Yeah, I don't think there was any need to change it. Aladdin - Diamond Edition
lastest info from today of my Disney Home Entertainment distributor says:Scamander wrote:Why would they do that? The Diamond Edition was supposed to include both films as well. Not to mention the third disc (Fantasia World), which was also cancelled!TheSequelOfDisney wrote: Or it was meant to be a Diamond all along, but then they changed it to a Special Edition 2 Movie Collection instead
DIJAMANTNA IZDANJA
*Pepeljuga DE 2012.
*Aladdin DE 2013.
*Mala Sirena DE - 2014.
It means:
2012: Cinderella DE
2013: Aladdin DE
2014: The Little Mermaid DE
IMO Aladdin was the PE with the best transfer... So naturally I have very high expectations for the DE... I think Aladdin is such a gorgeous movie I love the pink and purple hues, and the awesome backgrounds... I have seen a HDTV clip a few years ago and it looked amazing... Maybe Disney will not screw up a Blu-Ray release for once...
The blu-ray trailer is only so-so for me. Not quite as good as either Cinderella or Lady and the Tramp...

Transfer yes ..... but release will be disappointing. Expect the worst, and anything else will be a bonus ! I wonder how much of the amazing Platinum bonus features will be 'lost' with this release .... ?271286 wrote:IMO Aladdin was the PE with the best transfer... To be honest, I am expecting the worst, too. If a movie like The Lion King, a movie that is BEYOND popular with 90s kids, film critics and more, gets a super inferior Blu Ray release, what chances does Aladdin have?atlanticaunderthesea wrote:Transfer yes ..... but release will be disappointing. Aladdin, despite being incredibly popular in 1992 and till the late 90s, has been somewhat forgotten since. Sure, Princess Jasmine is in the princess lineup, but is overshadowed by the likes of Cinderella, Rapunzel and Belle. At the theme parks, we have at least a fairly popular show on California Adventure (though rumors are saying that it will be replaced by a Toy Story show), and the characters as meet and greets. But the only attraction it has is a Dumbo-knock off.
The few pieces of merchandise related to Aladdin are tied to the Disney Princess line, and like I said, Jasmine is overshadowed. So despite being one of the biggest successes of the 90s, it's pretty much a somewhat popular movie. So again, if a prestigious movie like Lion King got a very poor release, who says that Aladdin might get even worse?
It's a shame how Aladdin has been treated. I remember people boycotting the movie due to the 9/11 attacks. How does a Disney movie have anything to do with such a horrible occurrence and it was such a huge movie back in the day. I have so much Aladdin stuff from the 90's now a days all you can find is Jasmine merchandise related to the princess line. Sad

That's what I'm concerned about, too. I doesn't bother me if the Blu-Ray is delayed, but I am going to see this thing in theaters!rodis wrote:TLM pushed back to 2014? Oh no. I was hoping to get them both next year. So I guess no 3D release of Mermaid in September 2013. I'm disappointed.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"
True. The only connection between the movie and 9/11 that I was aware of, occurred here in the forum. People were trying to come up with ideas why the PE flopped and someone mentioned the U.S.'s change of heart toward anything Arab. That's all.DancingCrab wrote:I don't remember Aladdin ever being brought up in any 9/11 controversies. When did this happen?
All I remember was some objections to the lyrics in Arabian Nights back when the film came out in 1992 that were altered for home video and television.

I think the only reason why the 2005 Aladdin DVD flopped is because the Aladdin fans still kept their copies of the VHS and saw no reason to upgrade. That's my theory.
Though I also think that Aladdin also gets overshadowed by the popularity of the Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. It's in that middle square of being squashed between two very popular movies.
Hopefully in 2013 the Diamond release gets tons of sales and then it gets 3D release in the movies.

Nah. You have the other classics for comparison. The Little Mermaid sold tons on VHS and still when the DVD came out, it sold an incredible 7 million copies. The same applies for other titles that did just as good on VHS and repeated this success on DVD (Snow White).thelittleursula wrote:I think the only reason why the 2005 Aladdin DVD flopped is because the Aladdin fans still kept their copies of the VHS and saw no reason to upgrade. Aladdin was squashed between those two ever since and still made lot's more money than Beauty and the Beast. Just for comparison: BATB did $145 in the US box office vs. Aladdin's $217. And it sold a few millions more on VHS.Though I also think that Aladdin also gets overshadowed by the popularity of the Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. Maybe the general public finds it a little dated.
I've just had a thought (and apologies for veering away from the topic of the Aladdin Blu release).....but, has there ever been a definition given to the Diamond Line ? As the Platinums were billed as the 'best selling Disney Classics home releases'. Has the Diamond ever been labelled as such ?
I can only seem to recall them being called the most prestigious of Disney's back catalogue. Which is very different from 'best sellers'.
Therefore, my point it, if you are basing the Diamond's on the biggest sellers as the Platinum's were, then will the sales of the Platinum's be taken into account as well ?

..........and further to that, what were all of the Platinum's final sale figures ? Would there be a place to access them? AND what would be even more interesting, would be other releases like Alice In Wonderland that were not Platinum, but a 'Special Edition', and see how those figures compared.
I mean, Disney must like Alice somewhat as she has has two DVD releases, and one Blu release in the space of having the Diamond and Platinum line.

The less-than stellar performance of Aladdin on Platinum Edition DVD back in 2004 can be partially blamed on the fact that the television marketing for the movie was absolutely atrocious. Not a single promotional piece aired on the Disney Chanel explained anything about the plot to the current generation of children who were not as familiar with the film nor did it do much to incite people who hadn't seen the film in a number of years to purchase it again.
I was utterly baffled at the time why Disney chose to emphasize the release through the campy promotional antics of "Mike's Super Short Show" instead of proper promotional pieces and commercial campaigns that they had launched for the three previous Platinum Editions each year prior.
At least Disney has added it back to the Diamond Edition line-up and (hopefully) will give the movie a proper amount of sincere promotion this time around instead of marketing the release as if it were just a movie about a silly blue Genie.

Disney likes the money that the Tim Burton film brought in last year. The studio having a renewed interest in the animated counterpart is nothing more than an extension of the studio trying to cash in on the new film's success. I seriously doubt we would have seen both a third DVD edition and a (questionably) restored blu-ray had it not been for the 2011 film.atlanticaunderthesea wrote: I mean, Disney must like Alice somewhat as she has has two DVD releases, and one Blu release in the space of having the Diamond and Platinum line.
