I've been posting regularly on this site for about a month now and am very happy to have found such a friendly bunch of informed Disney fans.

I think I received my first Disney movie, Cinderella, when I was around 8. At the time, I didn't find it interesting but I found watching Disney movies repeatedly alleviated the dullness of childhood. In fact, my obsession with all things Disney did not peak until I was in college. That is when I began to collect Disney movies on VHS initially and then on DVD when I finally got my first DVD player in early 2003.

My favorite Disney movies are Beauty and the Beast, the Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and Aladdin.

I'm Michelle and I'm 16...a weird age to have an obssession-on-the-side with Disney. But I tell my friends that this is me, desperately clinging onto the last remnants of childhood. And in a way I am I suppose, living everyday with people telling us "the dot-comers", that university entry scores will soar, house and land prices are rising and we have to be billionares to keep up with new technology...and I could go on...(for god sakes...even those who lived through depression and war say we have it harder...according to SMH)...

rite...where was I?...my first encounter with Disney was Robin Hood on video...hell I even got my first words from there (remember the little bunny who says 'wait for me?' lol)...so I must have been around...1? That was followed by Lion King on big screen...and it remains my favourite today. (can't wait for it to come out here...oOo and the musical is opening soon too...) I was sooo disappointed when I heard Pixar's Finding Nemo beat its 'highest grossing....yada yada'.

I suppose my favourites are the ones from the 'golden era' (or something like that)..Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King...and a couple of the princess ones...but I'm not sure about the new Disney films...Lilo and Stitch...that was good coz it went back to the old stuff...but Atlantis, Sinbad....the sequels...well...it sorta speaks for itself...all sorta matches my bleak outlook on life huh?

The only thing that really annoys me about Disney is the DVD collection-mabobs...gold? limited? special? platinum?...being a self confessed obsessive compulsive...I just want to look at my DVD's and know at first glance that they are Disney...why oh why can't they be consistent!!!?!?

Don't even get me started on Region 4 missing out on all the good stuff!

Welcome, Michelle!
Great to have another Aussie on the boards...poor Loomis has been trying to do his part for "the motherland" but has struggled at times. I'm thinking he may be tipping back too many Eumundi's.

I know what you mean about the many lines Disney pubbed over the last few years. I gave up long ago trying to keep it all straight myself.

Welcome, michelle! :eye:

And good luck with law school applications, Lady. That's a lot of work, certainly. If all works out, you and Loomis can become the official legal team for UltimateDisney.com. ;)

Welcome Michelle...
R4 might miss out on stuff - but we have better music than the US so it is a trade-off I think...

That Ol' Disney Magic

Post by interactivemojo »

Hi guys, my name is Dan, I'm 32y/o and I just recently joined your DIScussions group and thought that even though this is an older post I'd try and revive some of that magic by telling my "Disney Story."

I'm not only a Disney fan but also an employee within the the Disney family. I've mystriously been watching Ultimate-Disney for sometime and love the atmoshere often felt here. It's not ever day that someone comes along an offers a site interesting enough to keep my attention more than a few mins. What do I do Disney? Well I'll give you a hint....animated thoughts come to mind. LOL. I do ask that if anyone decide to email please try and keep them close to the weekend where I can read them THANKS.....

I do hope that you guys except my introduction into your little world. And maybe with current situation being what they are withing the world of animation I might be able to mediate between our two worlds....

LOL

"IF YOU CARE....SEE BROTHER BEAR"...SMILES

OH PS: I was thinking about maybe designing some "BEAR" campaign T-Shirts. I'm almost positive I can get a permission pass from Disney to use some "official" bear artwork from the Studio since it would be for such a good cause...someone let me know if they think this would be a good idea??? HUGS DAN
If you want it, I've got it. Need Disney Treasures, Truelife and some series email me for my list.

Welcome to the site, Dan, and it's great to see another "Dan" roamig these hallowed halls. I just wish you were around a couple months ago when I was looking for an "insider" with respect to a job opportunity with Walt Disney Studios.

Love the avatar, too

Welcome Dan! I am surprised that a Disney employee would actually post on this forum. Just based on my own past work experience, once I work for a company I generally don't want anything to do with them outside of 9 to 5. It is nice to see that Disney employees are real fans of what they do.

I hope you give us all the inside scoop on all the top secret animation news.

:D Thanks for the warm reception guyz, a few of you have emailed me and asked about the situation in and around the studio involving traditional feature lengthed productions. And I will tell you this much, as it's been said before Disney isn't totally abadoning it's featured lengthed animated features, but until interest in the medium begins to pick back up Phase One Animation Production (the current production method of producing one film a year is coming to an abrute stop); sans next years Home On The Range.

A few of you also wanted the specifics of what exactly it is I do at Disney. I work at Feature Animation Florida and I specialize in 3-D modeling enviroments and objects for 2-D films. Now before we start throwing tomatoes please note that what I do is entirely different than producing an complete 3-D enviroment. I just model specific elements like landscapes and buildings, cars etc that are harder to move and saves 2-D artists time when animating. So please don't get mad or rialed at me. I'm a great fan of traditional animation techniques and really don't think you can beat the look and feel of traditional.

I also think it's a big mistake for Disney to entirely and so abrutely stop production because of a few hit and misses. It's my personal opinion that it's NOT the medium that isn't selling, it's pretty much the bland storylines and plots. Unfortuantly we all may suffer though because of it. But you have to realize Hollywood is a starved community because of fractured thought. I really believe in the fairy tale as a good "come back" medium. A few years back it was thought that Repunzel was going into production but unfortuantly that didn't seem to come to pass, I personally believe that would have kinda turned things around a bit.

Now, I will also say this for those of you REALLY worried. Disney KNOWS what makes it money and NO their not totally turning their backs on the medium that MADE them, so don't sweat it out too much. The unfortunate truth though is 2-D will come far and in between, where focus will turn more toward 3-Desque enviroments. Not that's that good, it's just probably not going to be as bad as you can imagine it as being.

And alot of people are looking at Brother Bear, unfortuantly most of the decision made are strong with the organization as far as production goes. Our wonderful world is changing but maybe it won't be as bad as we think it it.

Mission Space Rules..........

Dan-

Don't misunderstand us, we love the 3D animation as well! No problems there! But we look at each form of animation as a work of art. The computer animation, traditional, stop motion and claymation. I don't see why one technique would invalidate another one? Its like saying that because there is oil paint you can't paint in watercolors. Do you see what I mean?

I believe that all forms of animation can peacefully coexist together. We appreciate what you guys do with the 3D environments and realize that it takes a lot of skill and talent to do it. Everyone here loves computer animation. We just love the other kind as well and don't want to see it abandoned entirely. So, don't worry there will be no rocks hurled at you here!

I suppose I'll participate here, though I can't imagine that more people are going to scroll all the way back to page 7 to see more info.

I'm 20, live in Virginia, and I have been a Disney fanatic for five years now. I grew up on the movies (obviously), but always took them for granted until a high school field trip to Disney World to study their horticulture themeing, and landscaping. That was when I first began to be amazed at what goes into their stories and projects and the detail they (usually) allow for each adventure.

My favorite Disney movie is Cinderella, but my favorite Disney character is Megara and that has lead to a bit of a craze about the movie Hercules.

Since then I have developed a very strong interest in fairy tales, folklore, and mythology and I hope one day to find a niche for myself in entertainment that will allow me to have influence over developing plot, character, and story lines.

I'm mostly a lurker in this place, mostly because I haven't found much more to add to current discussions. But I enjoy reading the topics and posts here and I find myself coming back every couple of days just to read what is going on and some of the squabbles that make this place unique.

Oh, and to the maintainer of this website, I have been trying to find your e-mail address so I could send you a note telling you how much I appreciate your site. For a long time I had been searching for a site that would give me the information I needed on upcoming Disney DVD releases since I have that insane urge to know what is coming out and what is going to be good. It has also become my number one spot for new information on Disney movies since, in the boards, you don't cover just the DVD releases, but also upcoming Disney developments. I keep referring people to visit this site and I really think I might cry if this site fell on misfortune. Thank you so much for this site! Three cheers to you! :)

Hey Natalie, people do check out Page 7 of threads...well this one sticky at least! :)

Thanks for the interesting introduction - it's good to know you're still around even if you're not posting much and it's cool to hear where people are coming from in their appreciation of Disney.

Thanks even more for the kind words about the site - I can never hear often enough that people like the site, because it takes a lot of time to maintain, and in spite of being the first to bring news, people miss it and days go by and then some other site "breaks the news" that we already and certainly broke.

It's really awesome you're referring people and I'm thrilled you visit frequently! We can use all the referrals you can get! People who just visit general Disney sites or general DVD sites get only a slice of the insight, and yet we only get a small slice of the kind of traffic they get.

Sorry about having to kind of hide the e-mail address - if I don't, it just gets bombarded with spam and Yahoo has a very small capacity per account. I got a bunch at the UltimateDisney.com domain, but posting those too brings the spam. The negative side effects of having a semi-popular site.

Do feel encouraged to post more often - it doesn't have to be monumental or earth-shattering. (Heck, look at most of the stupid stuff I post on the forum!) As long as it's coherent, in English, and shows a bit of maturity...it'd be great. The more people who post, the stronger our community grows - and it's easy to lurk, but I think we could use more members who post and post intelligently - the few posts you've made here certainly seem to fit the latter and meet all requirements.

:)

Hey Natalie! I don't really have much to say other than welcome and...love the avatar. ;)

I agree with you, this is an awesome site. I think I scare my friends sometimes when I go off talking about every new Disney DVD release coming out or whatever because I know so much about Disney DVDs and I wouldn't have known any of it if it weren't for this site. :)

And I also agree with Luke when he says your posts don't need to be earth-shattering. I mean, I think I have the shortest, most pointless posts on this site but hey, Luke hasn't banned me yet. :P

PRINCE PHILLIP, thank you for this posting. It is great to see how it all started with each of you, guys. I am new to the forum and I would like to share my Disney experience with all of you.

I am a 31 y/o guy from Spain, but I've been living in the U.S for more than 3 years, so far. And many more to come, hopefully. When I was a kid I didn't go to the movies very much. I didnt' have the money and my parents couldn't take me. I never really got into Disney. But in my teenage years, a friend from Florida told me to go w/ her to see BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. It was 1992. That was the beggining. I loved that movie. A few days later, on vacation in Orlando, she said: hey, we'll wake you up early in the morning cos we're going to Disneyworld. I was like... Excuse me... you're gonna wake me up only to go to an amusement park? She replied... You will like it...

When I got there early in the moring, and entered that plaza w/ the castle on the background... MY LIFE CHANGED. I was in a movie! I was in a video! It was all magical!

I started watching Disney, buying Disney, READING, READING, READING Disney and I even made presentations and forums in college about Disney. I even wrote my dissertation about Disney -Propaganda-. And Disney is the reason why I got a Ph. D.

Now I am teaching film and video in Maryland... all the way from Salamanca, Spain... and guess what? The chair of my department has asked me to design a course about WALT DISNEY ANIMATION to teach all semester next fall. A-MA-ZING.

And yes, I do love Disney. Makes me dream. Makes me think better about myself. Disney is like my mentor in many things.

I humblely love it...
Sanctuary! Please, give me Sanctuary!

Welcome to the forum, quasi. Interesting story and it sounds like you'll really fit in here with your love of Disney. (Although lately it seems we all hate Disney for one reason or another - they messed with the Lion King, they're killing 2-D animation, they're not giving proper treatment to their catalogue titles, etc. :D ). Obviously, though, if we post the way we do here, there's gotta be something about Disney that makes us care and to the degree that we do.

That sounds really awesome getting to teach a class about Disney animation. Congratulations!
