I was almost going to say that perhaps 'established' titles can 'afford' bland DVDs - I mean, by now most parents/consumers are aware of Oliver and Mary. Except Gourd is 'new' in that it didn't come to American theaters, so it needs a fancier DVD to attract more attention as it isn't established.
However, Caspian's bland DVD/colored Blu discrepancy discredits that theory.

But the disc is inside the case, so consumers can't see it until they buy. My theory is that since Gourd is 2 years old, maybe cover and disc art was designed a while ago, but Disney just took a long time to release it, whereas these releases of Mary Poppins and Oliver were more recent decisions and to cut costs, they didn't create or produce disc art.

You know what I found hilarious? Discs 1 and 2 of Prince Caspian were bland grey but yet the Digital Copy disc was full color. Talk about your waste of moneyI believe this is the new way of Disney.
Oliver & Co. has the gray/silver.
Mary Pop does

The BOLT preview disc does
...cost saving devices, I guess.
Anyway, is there ANY reason whatsoever to buy this set? And "because you don't already own it on DVD" is not a proper answer - my alternative would be to snatch up a 40th Anniversary set before it becomes too hard to find.

Well if you want stuff about the musical, it's only on the 45th Anniversary Edition. I guess I'll try to find the older set, though.
Although I don't consider menu games as actual features, more like "wasted space that could be used for better things"... I have no problem with them removing the games. (though since they also removed other stuff... no new set for me!)

Thanks for the review of this dvd! I have yet to receive my copy (yes, I double-dipped even though I was mad about it not coming on blu-ray - I really love musicals and wanted to see that bonus feature) from Amazon.com. What's up with them? They used to ship early, so you received it on release day. Not so much anymore, I guess.

I'm not sure what's up with Amazon these days. Usually when I place an order I use my debit card and as soon as I place the order it is taken from my bank account. This last time I ordered Sabrina, the Teenage Witch season 2 and it has yet to be deducted from my bank account (a week later). Their getting slow. The new documentary on the Broadway show is very well produced, but I didn't feel that the filmed version of the show's "Step In Time" number came anywhere close to the excitement and spectacle of it when you see it live.
The brand new menus for this 45th addition are awesome. So much better than the 40th anniv addition's menus. They are really beautiful. Out of her carpet bag comes the hat stand that blooms like a flower into the lamp, daisies, cherries, then the weather vane. The scene goes up to her on the cloud as kites rise into the background sky. All the sub-menus then branch off and bloom into iron work adorned with cherries, chimneys, medicine bottles, birds, etc. It's really gorgeous.

According to Colin Jacobson over at HTF contrary to the UD review the Mary Poppins 5.1 remix is not the same as stated here & Oliver & Company is NOT the same transfer (as also listed in the UD review). He reviews for dvdmg.com & really knows his stuff. I've read several other reviews from dvd-basen and they also confirm a Poppins redone 5.1.
15 gallon 7 pint blood donor as of 1-4-11. Done donating. Apparently having Cancer makes you kind of ineligible to donate.
Even though I think this is a redundant release I rented it simply because I missed out on the 40th anniversary release.
Really enjoying the extras. The new Broadway extras were nice. It was fun seeing how they try to make a play that faithful to both the book and the movie and the challenges it took to make that happen. I really liked the scenes in which the stage composers talked to the Sherman brother over the phone and discussed music.
Still watching the extras but the hour long documentary was also nice. Informative but still brief and enjoyable. It was great seeing "Jane" again, as well as "Mrs. Banks" and such.
I never expected P.L. Travels to be so demanding! I was amazed how such a sweet looking woman was so demanding and even questioned and rejected Disney on more than one occasion.
So far really nice set, but they should have waited five more years for the 50th anniversary.
