Executive producer Kathleen Kennedy stated last December about Roger Rabbit 2: "We've attempted a script, but it's not really moving forward right now. That's not to say it won't in the future, but there's no spotlight on it now."

Now producer Don Hahn has backed up her statements:

"I have no comment. Oh, man! Roger Rabbit, we’ve talked about making for twenty-five years, since the original one came out. And you never know. But there’s nothing in the works right now.”

Zemeckis told me last night that, although he’s sad about the retirement of Bob Hoskins, he has a “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” ready to go. The brilliant 1988 combination live action and animation film has been begging for a sequel forever. “I have a script at Disney, and we’re just waiting for all the executive changes to settle down there,” Zemeckis told me. If I know Alan Horn, that’s a project he’ll get moving quickly. What great news!

Although the fate of one of Zemeckis' longest-gestating projects, a sequel to 1988's “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” has nothing to do with ratings, building up a dense and incident-filled history with Steven Spielberg and Disney instead, both Bob Hoskins' recent retirement and Disney's executive swap have kept the film's future relevant. However, Zemeckis is keeping his distance for now. “I'm not planning any sequel. All I know is there a draft for a sequel sitting at Disney [written by Peter S. Seamond and Jeffrey Price]. It's good, but I don't know what's going on, it's just a great script sitting.”

As far as I know, Zemeckis has promised that if a sequel happens, the animated characters will still be rendered traditionally, not using CG techniques.

I wonder how he'll achieve that. WDAS is not currently doing traditional, and Richard Williams no longer has his London studio following the Thief and the Cobbler fiasco.

Wish I'd see some new animation from Richard. That guy rocks.

Yeah but it's not as if Disney sold the desks off again. WDAS could easily produce the animation traditionally for a Roger sequel. The animators are still there.

What's wrong with that, I mean, it may be like Toy Story 3 where it was in development over the years until its release in 2010, and it was considered the greatest Toy Story ever.

Was Toy Story 3 in development for that long? Wasn't it a reaction to Disney setting up Circle 6 to make DTV sequels to Pixar films?

Anyway, there is no need for a Roger Rabbit sequel just as there was no need for a third Toy Story film, the second having wrapped things up nicely.

There's always James Baxter Animation, the studio that did the animation sequences in Enchanted.

I'm afraid James Baxter Animation is no more. Last I heard James Baxter is back as an animator at DreamWorks.

Studios will come and go, its par for the course really. Disney will always have a talent pool to dip into though when they need it. These are people that have been waiting for something to come along.

They wanted to do it before but it came to their attention that sequels wouldn't count in their initial 6 movie deal with Disney. It may not have gained any serious momentum until after the buyout but they had a general idea of what direction they wanted to go.

Q: I've pestered you about a sequel [to Roger Rabbit] over the years. And I hear there's a script that you're happy with?

Robert Zemeckis: I'm happy with the script. It's very good. It's written by the original writers, and it's good. [But Disney] is still thinking about it. If I were to do the sequel, it would be done just like the first one. It would look the same way, but we would present it in 3-D in its release. I would do all of the animation hand-drawn; 2D, but using 3D tools. It wouldn't be like Pixar 3D. It wouldn't look like that.

Q: You mention Pixar, and I'm not going to write your script for you — it's already been written — but do those Pixar characters enter into the fray, or do you stick to the original stable?

Robert Zemeckis: No, this would again be another period movie. That's all I can say!

Steve Starkey: That [Roger Rabbit] sequel is going to get made. Trust me. Yeah, we have a great script and we’re just trying to pull it together and see if we can pull it off but we’re ready to go. If somebody says Go, we’re there. [...] It’s troublesome but we last had lunch with [Bob Hoskins]… we’ll figure out a way. With digital technology there’s always a way to get a guy on his feet.

Jack Rapke: And he’s ready to do it. He’s ready to do it.

I took it as a joke. Sounds like Starkey whoever is just building up false hope.

There are other more effective ways to address it as false hope rather than just posting F U and that's it.

EDIT:

To stay on topic, I wonder how they will get all the companies to come together like they did in the first one. It's gonna be hard to pull off. Companies in the 80s are nothing like they are now including Copyright and how Cartoon Characters are owned and such. I wonder if it's a lost cause, but perhaps they will pull it off. I've just heard it on and off that there will be a sequel but I'm not so sure it will happen at this point.

However if it would happen, I think it would be great and have a lot of potential depending on the story.

In some ways I just hope they leave the sequel idea behind, but I am very curious to see what the plot would be...
