A previous post by someone mentioned the problems Disney would cause by only sending 50% of the distribution orders. According to the manager, Suncoast received only a small percentage of the sets that they had ordered. Luckily, I didn't trust my pre-order thru Suncoast (since Suncoast did not carry the Wave 1 sets) and bought the set the same day it was released at my local Wal-Mart.
But how do you know that Suncoast didn't really order too few? Disney is only going to send 50% of the orders if only 50% was ordered. In other words, nothing sort of a major cataclysmic disaster is going to stop Disney from reaping the rewards of a product release.
So, based on that, I feel it is possible that Disney "MIGHT" go ahead and ship out what they have to ship and do a later "second printing" in May 2004. Assuming that the packaging and discs and tins are completed, why can't Disney send out the 125,000 (or whatever) for December and number the new tins in May starting with 125,001?
Because the first run tins have a number like so: 1 of 125,000. Meaning that this is supposed to be a "collectible" and limited-edition release of only 125,000 copies. If 125,001 came out, it would force Disney to admit that limited-edition releases are a bunch of feldercarb. It's ignorant, it's stupid, it's a marketing ploy to excite people to buy DVDs. It means nothing. And Disney has proven that by releasing the "Ultimate Disney Treasure Box" at Costcos across the country. Hey, look! You can get all of the sets at half the cost two years later! It's the same product! With no stupid numbered tins!
Release Wave 3. Release it 12/2, Disney.

Okay. I, just like Trojan Mouse, got a response from Leonard Maltin himself. Here is what he had to say:
Hi...
Yes, it's true: the Disney Treasures have been delayed until May of 2004. The reason is actually encouraging, however: the demand was beyond what the folks at Disney Home Video anticipated, and they simply couldn't prepare enough tins in time to meet the December date. This special packaging is hand-assembled, and if they'd rushed to get them out next month they wouldn't have been able to fill all the orders they had. So they decided to delay the date and do things right.
Please help spread the word, if you can, that despite the incredible rumor-mill that always gets going on the web, there is no conspiracy here, or change of heart. In fact, it's quite the contrary, since the Home Video people are thrilled at the response this new set of four titles has generated.
I too am disappointed to have to wait another five months... but I hope when you see the finished product you'll feel it was worth the wait.
cheers,
Leonard Maltin

Disney wants to get it right. That's what I'm getting from this email here. They aren't trying to dupe us or try to piss us off. Just trying to meet the demand. So let's try to keep our heads about all this and not start speculating or flying off the handle.
We'll just have to suck it up and wait.
peace,

Well, if they don't want to piss us off, it is late for those who have been waiting for so long and even preordered them. Last-minute decissions are disrespectful.
Of course the demand is always bigger than the extremely limited release of the tins. Specially if we're talking about Mickey or Donald cartoons.
Although they won't do this, I would feel better if I could already get my preorder and if they have to release more copies, then do it once the first ones have sold out -aparently, already-.
I don't know. I feel disrespected. That's all.
Not that Disney gives a damn, as long as I buy their dvds, and I will. That's all that counts to them.

I never really liked Leonard Maltin...but I have to admit that I have a growing respect for the man. His reply two posts above have turned my attitude around. And he's right: with higher sales of this latest wave, Disney will most certainly sit up and take notice and release more waves in the future. Perhaps even Song of the South.
So while I'm absolutely dumbfounded that Disney has been taken aback by this situation THREE WEEKS before the release date, I'm comforted knowing that this latest wave will be done right and that Wave 4 will be right around the corner. Hopefully.
I just hope they forget the stupid "limited edition" crap when looking at Wave 4 if all they're going to do is make the edition size larger and postpone release. Sheesh.

Now this is actually something I *approve* of. The tins are limited, the contents aren't. Selling the Treasures in a normal package allows folks to get the disks without paying through the nose. It doesn't affect the collectability of the tins at all.Big Bad Leroy Brown wrote:And Disney has proven that by releasing the "Ultimate Disney Treasure Box" at Costcos across the country. Hey, look! It's exactly the same thing they did with Lion King. I had the choice, do the box set, or get the cheaper plain version.
That's exactly what they should have done here. Sell the tins, as well as individual versions without the tins. Let the buyer decide what he wanted.
Amazon delivery for the tins
Oddly enough my amazon expected delivery date for my order is still listed as December. Has anyone else who has them on pre-order noticed a status change? I'm just curious why amazon has updated the product pages with the new release date, yet not changed the order ETA...

I completely agree and as for the number available I don't care if only 2 are made available as long as I get my ONE!!!!Big Bad Leroy Brown wrote:Hear, hear! I totally agree. GOD!!! I don't how to react to this, I kept hoping it was all a terrible dream, I honestly don't know how to react everytime I think about this, it's like my head wants to explode or implode or both at the same time, I just want to break into tears and I get a huge migrain that usually lasts for hours, as a matter of fact it's happening right now!

I hate that I am the one, well actually all of us, that has to suffer just because Dumb old Disney didn't have the decency to print enough tins earlier, and I swear to God if I see one more person type, that this is a good thing in that atleast "they are trying to do this right of whatever, I am really going to lose it! These are collectable Limited Editions, there fore it should be first come first serve and not just for the internet buyers buty for store buyers as well, I would be willing to be at Wal-Mart opening December 2 just to make sure I got my copies before they sold out 20 minutes later!!!
They don't make more copies of rookie baseball cards just because there is a higher demand for the Babe Ruth one, than what was produced....
Ugh... I don't know how much longer I can go on about this I think I need an asprin! actually a few! Actually drugs really have no effect on me, maybe I'll just take a long hot shower and try not to think about this...
Anyway I swear there is a damn disney dvd conspiracy out there against me. Everytime I look forward to a DVD release it is pushed back....
First with Aladdin, being pushed back a whole year, then with Sleeping Beauty this past year, and now with the treasures, plus I was really expecting Mermaid in 2005 and now it looks like that isn't going to happen

Are you listening to yourself here? I mean, it's not going to be the end of the world. Everything will be fine. You're not going to fall apart if you don't have every single Mickey film. You didn't have this DVD set before, you'll do alright until May.Prince Phillip wrote: and I swear to God if I see one more person type, that this is a good thing in that atleast "they are trying to do this right of whatever, I am really going to lose it! Just put it into perspective here. I'm an animator and I'd love to have all these sets for my library to study as well as to be entertained, but we should all be used to the delays by now, don't you think?
And....this is a good thing! At least Disney is trying to do this right!...j/k. Sorry, I just had to say that for joke's sake.

Well, I have to chime in as someone who is actually relieved that it has been delayed. It is reducing the amount of things that I am going to have to ask for for Christmas, or have to hope I have enough money for after. This gives me until May to come up with it. I'm a Star Trek Deep Space Nine fan and I have been buying those on DVD and the last two seasons are coming out now, and those are about $90 a pop.

My numerous experiences with Amazon is that the "expected delivery date" on pre-orders does not change until the date previously listed (December for the Treasures DVD sets) arrives. So I don't expect my December ETA date to change to May 2004 until December.

Re: Amazon delivery for the tins
Amazon seems to have updated the release dates now (at least for Donald, I didn't look at the others). Except they are saying "May 4, 2004".jebsdad wrote:My numerous experiences with Amazon is that the "expected delivery date" on pre-orders does not change until the date previously listed (December for the Treasures DVD sets) arrives.
