Good news regarding the aspect ratio for "Lady and the Tramp".
This is info from the Disney site:
Technical Specifications:
Not All Technical Specifications Apply To All Elements
Color
1.33:1, 2.55:1 Aspect Ratio
Region 1
5.1 Disney Enhanced Home Theater Mix
It seems we are gonna have this film available in its original aspect ratio for the first time in home video!

This sounds promising, Joe! Thanks for looking this up!

No information about the anamorphic status of the widescreen version yet?

I think I'll preorder it on Disney.com. It comes with a pin & lithos if you preorder by a certain time.

Another one to help complete the collection.

As most of you know I have my Disney DVDs on a couple of Disney shelves, and have reserved spaces for each movie I'm missing. And I love filling them one by one.

PS

The second shelf is only missing The Little Mermaid

If by that you mean the disc coding, i'd assume the widescreen version it's gona be 16:9 coded, it would be kraaaazeeeeee to get the correct 2.55 Cinemascope aspect ratio and then waste it on a letterboxed 4:3 coded disc transfer.

Just to be clear in case anyone doesn't visualize it yet: the widescreen 2.55 Cinemascope version is gonna have black bars even when 16:9 DVDcoded and seen on a 16:9 Widescreen display, cus 16:9 displays are 1.78 wide and The Scope movie is much wider being 2.55 wide. But that's how it's supposed to be. Capicce? ;)

But if they got it at 2.55 as Joe (*waves to Joe :-D) and others UDies are reporting, that's good cus we'll finally hopefully see the original proper image of this groundbreaking Disney first Cinemascope Animated Movie :-D

I'd like to take this occassion to say that if indeed it comes with the full 2.55 image; thanks to all the UD members that contributed to that LatT aspect ratio mistery thread! (on International)
Cus i'd like to think that in some small measure UD contributed to insure the proper ratio was preserved for this release :)

We won!

(Hopefully. Don't disappoint me Disney :-P)

Now as for the 4:3 coded version being 1.33 ... It should be 1.37 :o

Battlestations!

just kidding :-P

I'm looking forward to get the DVD because, I have the original VHS Black Diamond edition. No excuses for the original, it doesn't have a widescreen version. About 20 years ago, "Lady and the Tramp" was on VHS and it doesn't show any signs of a widescreen version - it was fullscreen only. As for Platinum Edition DVD coming soon, GOOD!

Actually my dear, there was a widescreen VHS of Lady and the Tramp - it was just an extremely limited edition, and hard to find. I dunno how many copies they made of the VHS, but here's the cover art... and as you can see, Disney was clearly pretty damn lazy and just pulled the exact art of the dogs at the table, as well as Tony and Joe, and slapped it onto the new Platinum DVD cover. Oy!

But anyhoo, as to what the actual ratio on the widescreen VHS was, well. Since it was the same as the laserdisc and the first LatT DVD's master, it's likely 2.35:1, unless Disney did some weird treatment to the VHS that they didn't to the laserdisc/DVD, like zooming or somesuch. :P

Well I'm getting into this LATT OAR argument pretty late, but when was the Widescreen VHS released? Seems hard to believe there was a seperate edition of the VHS since it's really unlike Disney, but hey, videos were just invented so Disney was just trying it out I guess.

BTW, isn't kinda sad how we have 4 threads arguring what a movie's OAR was?

The widescreen Lady and the Tramp VHS came out simultaneously with the fullscreen Masterpiece Collection VHS in 1998. This was actually the second time Disney had presented an animated classic in widescreen VHS. They did it in 1997 with Sleeping Beauty (sorry I couldn't find a bigger pic):

I guess Disney felt both films were wide enough to deserve widescreen releases.

For the record, Disney's been very lazy with their Platinum covers in general. Every cover (except Snow White and The Lion King) is made up of touched up clipart from previous VHS releases (and most of the time, the original VHS version looks better). It makes me wonder if we'll see Ariel in one of her two VHS poses for the upcoming Little Mermaid DVD cover.

Snow White was the first animated movie ever, and Lion King was just plain good. So maybe they only do it for either a very good film or if they had a reputation in history. The Little Mermaid I think is a good enough film for an awesome cover!

My guess would be that probably they made those exceptions because they had too many characters in the covers.

PS

If they did this with LatT as well, this might mean that SLEEPING BEAUTY will have the same cover too.

I don't see the big deal in the cover. It's a CLASSIC image. When anyone thinks Lady & The Tramp, typically - THAT is the exact scene that is thought of. As is Snow White with an apple, or Simba being held up by Rafiki, or pretty much aspects of every PE cover.

Based on the way BVHE has been doing their mailings lately, probably about a week before release. If they stick with tradition (and seeing as how the Platinums are usually pressed and ready further in advance, that shouldn't be so difficult) then probably around February 10-14. Of course, the direct-to-video sequels usually are sent well ahead of release date, but Bambi II still hasn't shown up and it is only 2½ weeks away.

Why should we expect it to have cover artwork for Little Mermaid, though? I'm sure it will be promoted in the booklet, on the disc and, if they're still making them, in the Disney DVD Insider, but I honestly don't remember that being a tradition? Truth be told, as exciting as it would be to see Little Mermaid cover art, I'm more tickled by the idea of having a Virtual Puppy! ;)

Woah, I didn't know that Lady And The Tramp was coming out this year. I might buy this movie because the plot and characters sound cute and romantic. I only have one month to pre-order the DVD with the free lithographs.

Haha, I think they should say this in the advertising trailer: "See The Little Mermaid Platinum Edition Cover when you Buy Lady and the Tramp February 28." just to get more of us to buy the DVD.

I just can't wait to see the cover for TLM, I'm almost sure that this cover will appear in the Disney Insider of Lady and the Tramp and if the cover doesn't appear there at least it will have a section for that movie and it will show some of the features that TLM will have, but let's hope to see the cover too. :)
