You know something? I think I know what you mean here. And if I have your meaning correctly, I have to back you up on this one. It usually drives me insane when movies take history and try to use it to make cute little jokes (the worst, not in a Disney movie, was Forrest Gump and him showing Elvis to move his hips that way- I don't even like Elvis's music and I nearly kicked the screen in on my TV set).

I agree with you both on that. But since Pocahontas was already historical inaccurate I can look past that. I mean in real life she was like 12!

Because! He's funny! And wild! And exciting, and... Well, I like him for everything you said: because he does zany and irresponsible things. Does *every* character have to be such a goody-goody? Doesn't everybody sometimes dream about leading an adventurous life in which you could do everything you wanted, like Toad? That's why he's likable. People share that desire.

Really? That was always one of my favorites from that film. The only reason I can think to dislike it are the later-added PC lyrics. But with the original words, I always found it very powerful (and I liked that they showed both sides had prejudice; though I'm not sure if that actually applied so much to the whites v. the NAs...).

Of course, I can again see the "preachiness" in that. To me, the (dramatic) films that directly followed TLK often tried too hard to moralize (ex: "CotW," "God Help the Outcasts," "Someday," etc.). But, regardless, I always love Menken's soundtracks (though none of them have been as strong lyrically since Ashman, imo), and I try to enjoy the songs despite the negative aspects of the films they may come from.

I also don't care about Pocahontas's anti-history. I just wanted to say I know how people feel when a movie might try to take something important and trivialize it for a kind of joke. It's beyond smug (at least it was in Forrest Gump). What they did with Pocahontas the character and her passion for nature, that sort of thing, was wonderful.

I trust that was a temporary mental fart and that I needn't direct your attention to the numerous Disney villain topics I've posted in. Of course I love bad characters. When they're fun. Toad on the other hand, you just want to smack some sense into. And look at M(a)cBadger and Rat. They were stressed out and unhappy... because of him. Did they really deserve that? I think not. It took 3+ people just to clean up his messes. That's overkill on the "zany and irresponsible" charge. That's pure gluttony. Too much of something I still say wasn't good in the first place. Toad should have lost everything.

I just don't think it's a very good song, either in terms of melody or lyric. The one-dimensional treatment of the characters doesn't help.

"A Girl Worth Fighting For" is absolutely horrible and I don't care so much for "Reflection" either (sorry). But "I'll Make A Man Out of You" and "Honor To Us All" are alright.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this but the whole "Yodel" song from Home on the Range is absolutely TERRIBLE! Don't get me wrong, the whole movie is garbage but it was at the point that this little number started that I wanted to pop out the DVD.

I absolutely can't stand "Daughters Of Triton" at the beginning of The Little Mermaid. All the other songs in that movie are great.

I also dislike "A Guy Like You" from The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. It's not a terrible song on it's own but I hate the sequence and it just doesn't stand up to the rest of the songs in the movie (which are some of Menken's best).

I'm baffled how "Mine Mine Mine" made it in Pocahontas (granted, the whole production is underwhelming, to say the least). The melody is great but the lyrics are pretty dumb with a really stupid chorus. "Savages" is a little irritating too.

While none of the songs in The Princess and the Frog are particularly good, it's all the ones sung by Jim Cummings (Ray) that completely take me out of the movie with his over-the-top accent/cartoony voice.

I'm sure there is a lot of songs from the older movies that I don't like.

Most of the songs you list have been mentioned before on this thread. The Yodel song, A guy like you and Mine Mine Mine.

I agree that on it's own "A guy like you" isn't terrible, it even has some clever rhyme, but it's so out of place with the rest of the songs in HOND and the whole scene displays a forced kind of humor. (I also don't like the 'cartoony violence' jokes displayed throughout the movie).

To mention something else, I'm not to fond myself of the beginning tune of Robin Hood. The whisling gets on my nerves quite a bit, and I find it rather dull.

I don't like the film myself either, but at least "Be Prepared" was excellent (sans Jeremy Irons and Jim Cummings voice switching). One slight problem... if only they could have killed young-Simba, then the song would be even creepier (because that great creepy shot where Scar says, "we're going to kill him. Simba too," I got really freaked out... and really excited at the prospect).
