Thanks for all the updates, disneyprincess11! I'm glad the first reactions are positive. I was hoping we'd get our first listen to Alan Menken's song in the B-roll, but we'll have to wait a bit more. So Nicole Scherzinger is voicing little Moana's mum. Between her voicing her mother and she being called Mo, it's clear her resemblance to Moana is not a coincidence. Stitch Kingdom has also posted the complete list of songs featured in the movie and the list of video game cameos.

More details on the Menken song.
Walt Disney Animation Studios filmmakers have long valued the power of music in supporting and elevating its storytelling. For “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston called on Disney Legend Alan Menken (“The Little Mermaid,” “Aladdin,” “Tangled”) to write the music, and Sarah Silverman (voice of Vanellope von Schweetz) and Gal Gadot (voice of Shank) to perform the song “A Place Called Slaughter Race” in the film.

“We were exploring ways that Vanellope’s arc could be completed in a fulfilling way,” says director Phil Johnston, who co-wrote the lyrics. “Every classic Disney princess knows that if you know what you want and you go after your dreams, you’ll start to sing.”

Adds Silverman, “Vanellope learns from the other Disney princesses that she must have a quest, a desire—a ‘want’—and that she needs to express that desire in song,” says Silverman. “Vanellope tries but it just doesn’t come to her—until it does!”

Of course, Silverman sang the song in Vanellope’s iconic voice. “It’s definitely different than just singing as me,” she says. “The crazy thing is that Vanellope seems to have a wider vocal range. How is that possible? Somehow it was.”

In the vein of classic “I want” songs in the Disney canon like “Someday My Prince Will Come,” “Part of Your World” and “Colors of the Wind,” the song showcases Vanellope’s desire to be part of the world outside Sugar Rush—to grow as a racer and as a person. Says Tom MacDougall, executive vice president of music at Disney, who co-wrote the lyrics with Johnston. “It’s funny that Vanellope is singing and the lyrics are unexpected, but the music was never intended to be a joke. We always wanted it to be earnest and real.”

So naturally, they turned to award-winning songwriter/composer Alan Menken to write the music. Menken’s credits include “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Pocahontas” and “Aladdin,” winning Oscars® for songs like “Under the Sea,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Colors of the Wind” and “A Whole New World.” “Having Alan Menken write a song for our movie is the realization of a weird dream I never imagined could actually come true,” says Johnston.

Silverman feels the same way, “especially working with Alan Menken, who—besides writing iconic music for Disney movies—also wrote my favorite musical, ‘Little Shop of Horrors,’” she says. “Getting to work with and know Alan was a career highlight.

Gal Gadot was also called on to perform in the song as Shank. “The song is really about Vanellope, who’s at a crossroads in her life,” she says. “She’s fallen in love with Slaughter Race and has found an immediate older-sister connection with Shank, which is a completely different relationship than she has with Ralph. And this place has made her question the life she’s living.

“It was so much fun,” Gadot continues. “I really enjoyed working with Phil [Johnston], Rich [Moore] and Tom [MacDougall]. This being my first time singing in a film, I was a bit nervous, but they were great coaches! I hope everyone loves the end result as much as I do.”

Filmmakers called on singer-songwriter Julia Michaels (“Issues”) to perform the second end-credit song, “In This Place,” a pop version of “A Place Called Slaughter Race.” “I think one of my favorite things about ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ is Vanellope,” says Michaels, “because she’s just completely misunderstood. I think a lot of people feel that way—misunderstood—and go through life trying to find their power. And when they find it, it’s really beautiful.”

“Julia really made the song her own,” says Johnston. “She took the longing and the desire that Vanellope has and translated it into something she’s clearly feeling. It’s a very personal interpretation of the song. Her soul is on fire.”

According to MacDougall, the song’s comedic roots might have been challenging to convert. “When you try to translate it into a more contemporary arrangement, you still have lyrics about dumpster fires and burning tires, among other colorful ideas. But Julia’s such a huge fan of Disney Animation that she really wanted to see what she could come up with. She was able to extract something that even if you heard the song without any knowledge of the original, there’s so much to enjoy.”

Adds Johnston, “We showed her 15 minutes of the movie. She was laughing and I think she cried twice. She has very easy access to her emotions, and ultimately was able to honor the song while making a genuine connection.”

Thank you for posting the goodies D82! I was about to post them! Surpringsly there’s no footage of Vanellope’s song, so they’re wrapping it up nicely. Also, shocked there’s no mention of it in the interviews nor a interview with Alan. However, I found out through Instagram stories that Sarah just revealed at today’s press that Somewhere That’s Green was an inspiration for this song and it was a warm-up for her, so I’m dying to hear it now!

And thank you Sotiris! Where did you find that?

EDIT: Found the ending note of Vanellope's song (1:25)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xfi2BEghFYQ

Just read from the list that John C. Reilly is singing Never Gonna Give You Up. Funny that Ralph is going to rickrioll the audience and I'm glad they aren't leaving John's singing talent out.

Sotiris, guess demos are only for musicals. Coco didn't get anything either. Also, can you please show me your link to the song info?

Good catch! I didn't even notice that was from the song when I watched that video. I hope next time the snippet is a little longer. :P

And thanks for all the exclusive info about the songs and the soundtrack, Sotiris! It makes me look forward to listening to the songs even more.

You guys, I have been obsessed with "Kitty gets the milkshake, Bunny gets the pancake!" since the first trailer. I have been hoping they'd release the game for real. And now that they have, it's on iOS, not Android!

It looks like Vanellope has been redesigned for the parks, but I'm having a heck of a time noticing if Ralph has been, too.

Someone has posted a rave review of the musical number, even calling the song Oscar nominee-worthy.

Ugh, I'm so sorry. Yeah, iSO usually gets everything which is weird. Hang in there.

I'm disappointed that Vanellope is not a face character. If she was, she could easily be in the Princess Fairytale Hall, which I'm beyond shocked she isn't. I think if she does join the lineup, she'll be face and move in with the girls.

Ralph has def changed. His smile and his eyes are sharper. Vanellope looks much better than before. She literally scared the kid in front of me when I met her way back at Disney

I believe it! Her last park design was pretty creepy!

And thanks for clarifying about Ralph- I'll just have to have both images side by side on the computer to notice the differences...

It seems that still is from this TV spot. Heihei is also in that shot. It looks like a scene out of House of Mouse.

I love the fact that Kate Higgins & Jennifer Hale were at the premiere today; I know having the original ladies all together is incredible, but especially feel bad for Jennifer Hale as she has been the voice of Cinderella for years and years, with 0 recognition. About time she had her time to shine !

I agree. I wished they called the toddler something other than "Mo" though. What a horrible name! Maybe they could have called her Mona or something else that's similar to Moana.

I'm glad they're promoting the song in their FYC ads. Even though they submitted the movie in a lot of categories, I thought they'd only push for Best Animated Film.
disneyprincess11 wrote:Someone has posted a rave review of the musical number, even calling the song Oscar nominee-worthy. https://twitter.com/SamOnTV/status/1058939570773929985
That's good to hear! It makes me hopeful it could actually get nominated despite it being a long shot. It would be a small miracle if it did.
disneyprincess11 wrote:Also, shocked there’s no mention of it in the interviews nor a interview with Alan.
That's probably because they're saving it as a surprise and don't want to reveal too much. Also, the song was added pretty late in the game so it's understandable if they didn't have the chance to include Menken in the EPK and other pre-recorded material. I'm sure if the song gets nominated, there's going to be more press and spotlight on it.
disneyprincess11 wrote:I found out through Instagram stories that Sarah just revealed at today’s press that Somewhere That’s Green was an inspiration for this song and it was a warm-up for her, so I’m dying to hear it now!
As you know, Menken's first Oscar nomination was for Little Shop of Horrors. Wouldn't it be cool if this song inspired by it earned him another nomination now? It would come full circle!
disneyprincess11 wrote:Sotiris, guess demos are only for musicals. Coco didn't get anything either.
I wish Disney would include demos in every soundtrack that featured original songs. What's the point of keeping them hidden anyway? Don't they know fans love them? Stuff like that make great bonus tracks which is an extra incentive for people to buy the release.
disneyprincess11 wrote:Full press conference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGoCs5U8DmI
Thanks! I've transcribed the part where Sarah talks about the song.
Q: What was it like to finally get your own Disney princess song?

Sarah Silverman: It was a dream come true. I couldn’t believe it. When you guys told me I was going to have a song, we had already been recording for a while, and I couldn’t believe it. The music was written by Alan Menken and I got to meet him and work with him and rehearse with him. He played "Somewhere That's Green" for me to sing from my favorite [musical] Little Shop of Horrors. He wrote Little Shop of Horrors, my favorite. Of course, he's like this Disney icon who wrote iconic songs. It was incredible. We recorded with a whole orchestra like you see in old-timey movies. It was crazy. It was really a thrill of a lifetime.
