My prediction is it will be nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Original Song and maybe Best Original Score.
It might win the original song.

Since we were talking in another thread about Disney trying to control the Oscar outcome every year by only submitting specific songs rather than everything--I almost wonder if that might actually negatively affect the quality of their modern musicals over time. As in, the composers are told going in to focus all their attention on making one song that will be nominated, and so they aren't as focused on making the rest of the soundtrack stand up to the same level of quality as that most important song.

But that should be set up during the film and not come out of nowhere.
something like that would make a neat end credit sequence setting up a 3rd film. But the way she phrased it makes me think its meant to be a fluffier and throwaway scene only implying that its them( it does seem to be more that one character. So either Hans, Duke or Marshmallow or 2 of them or all 3, Im sure Kai and Gerda will appear somewhere in the film with the crowds or assisting the sisters earlier in the castle and she's discounted FF as canon so no snowgies.)

Like maybe Olaf or someone else builds snowmen versions of them as part of a joke or Anna sees their pics in a newspaper about something they did. Just something really lame and inconsequential.

Although maybe Im just confusing the phrase "in their own way" with "in a way" which has two very different connotations. The first one does imply its them in the flesh. I wonder if she might have been misquoted.
So really I have no idea... but again I'm not expecting it to amount to much.

I had that feeling with Moana tbh.

Besides that, does Anna get to do anything important or genuine in this movie, or is she just relegated to background fodder?

she will have an important role but its VERY spoilery so proceed at your own risk:

she must destroy the dam(Im not sure if Elsa helps her, the leaks so far are very unclear about alot of the stuff that happens on the 3rd act) and later takes the role of Queen when she thinks Elsa has died.

Lol, are you hoping she will become mere wallpaper to piss a certain someone and her band of sycophants off?

She does become Queen at the end, and then there's the stuff with Kristoff. Mostly it sounds like she's chasing after Elsa though. She did spend most of the first film reacting to Elsa's actions, too.

A VR short titled "Myth: A Frozen Tale" set in the Frozen universe will debut at the world premiere of Frozen 2. A non-VR version of this short would have been perfect to screen in front Frozen 2. Why didn't they do that?
Our new VR Short, Myth: A Frozen Tale, will debut at the World Premiere of Frozen 2. Directed by Jeff Gipson, the short is inspired by the world of Frozen 2 and utilizes the latest VR technology, an original music score, and stylized art direction by Brittney Lee.

Myth: A Frozen Tale! Proud to share my second film as a director at Disney Animation. The amazing crew that has truly pushed the limits of cinematic storytelling in VR. Premiering tonight at the Dolby Theatre with Frozen 2, it is the first VR film to have a premiere on Hollywood Blvd. Much love to Nick Russell, producer, Brittney Lee, production designer, Jorge E. Ruiz Cano, head of animation, Jose Gomez, head of technology, Ed Robbins, head of characters, Mike Anderson, head of environments, Ian Coony, head of FX, all of the crew and everyone at the studio who made this film a reality. Excited for the world to see it and be immersed in the world of Frozen.

To celebrate this groundbreaking animation work, we stopped to chat with the short’s director, Jeff Gibson, who shed some light on what we can expect from Myth: A Frozen Tale. “It’s kind of a bedtime story,” he explained. “It’s more of a stylized concept—It’s animation in a world you can look all the way around.” The short gives us deeper insight into the cultural world of Arendelle, transporting the audience into a mystical and enchanted forest where the elemental spirits come to life. Gibson explains, “Jen and Chris and Peter were all creative advisors on this, so it was great to have them along in the process to create what we’ll be showing tonight.”

“The idea for Myth: A Frozen Tale came from a personal place for me, and was inspired by my family’s tradition of telling bedtime stories. This led me to start thinking about what the world of Frozen and some of the film’s new elemental characters would look like in VR,” Gipson explained. “Myth: A Frozen Tale is set in a forest outside of Arendelle as a family sits down for a bedtime story. As the mother reads, the audience is transported to a mystical and enchanted forest where the elemental spirits come to life and the myths of their past and future is revealed. With breathtaking production design by Brittney Lee, and a brilliant musical score by Joseph Trapanese, this film follows in the Fantasia legacy of using imagery and music together in an experimental way, using the latest advances in virtual reality to achieve that.”

‘Myth: A Frozen Tale’ is an original story that I wrote and directed. Jennifer Lee, our Chief Creative Officer and one of the directors of Frozen, approached me after ‘Cycles’ and asked me if I would be interested in doing a film for Frozen 2 using virtual reality. I was kind of blown away, but also kind of nervous, because Frozen’s world and its characters are among our most important. Our fans love them. So, I was nervous about how I would create something new while staying true to that world. About this time last year, I started doing research and watched some early screenings of Frozen 2. There are some elemental characters in Frozen 2 I really connected with, and they reminded me of bedtime stories that my mom and dad told me growing up. It just developed from there to creating a story that is part of the Frozen world, but also its own piece as well. If you see ‘Myth: A Frozen Tale’ before or after Frozen 2, it will still make sense. There’s talk of a flat version of ‘Myth’ down the line [a version that can be projected on traditional movie screens], but right now we really want to show off the virtual reality component and have our audiences be in the world of Frozen 2 with those characters. How we share virtual reality films on a large scale, though, is something our creative leadership and executive teams are still exploring.

For Myth: A Frozen Tale, hand-drawn and CG effects animation were combined to evoke the stylized art direction of this VR short inspired by Frozen 2.

That would have been a good idea. Maybe they don't have a proper non-VR version of it ready though.

For that matter, is there even a short confirmed to screen before the film?

It was clear that "Into the Unknown" was going to be the only song from the film submitted for the Oscars because it's the only one they've been promoting.

I didn't expect there would be a short in front of the movie. That's a nice surprise! It's a shame it's only for the world premiere, but probably it will be included in the Blu-ray. If the art direction of the short resembles that concept art, it's going to be beautiful to watch.

Here are more details about the short:
Commenting on the announcement, Clark Spencer, president of Walt Disney Animation Studios, said, “Frozen 2 takes place in such an incredibly rich and exciting cinematic environment, and Myth: A Frozen Tale allows viewers to explore and experience this world in a whole new way. Jeff Gipson is one of the leading pioneers in the world of VR, and he found a way to immerse viewers in this world that wouldn’t have been possible any other way. We are so excited to share this amazing VR film with audiences everywhere.”

Gipson added, “The idea for Myth: A Frozen Tale came from a personal place for me, and was inspired by my family’s tradition of telling bedtime stories. This led me to start thinking about what the world of Frozen and some of the film’s new elemental characters would look like in VR. No, there isn't. The latest WDAS and Pixar releases (Ralph Breaks the Internet and Toy Story 4) didn't have one attached either.

I can't say I like either of them. I thought it would sound better with a female vocalist but it doesn't. It's the arrangement that's the problem. It really doesn't suit the song. It goes against the melody and the way it's structured.

If they had made him a much more complex character then maybe, but they really wanted that twist so they turned him into a sociopath. Don't think I'll be able to forgive someone who just left me to die and aiming to kill a member of my family just to be a king consort with no queen or heir so basically nothing.

To expand on what I said - Had Hans wanted to "sacrifice" Elsa in order to save Anna and Arendelle, then sure maybe he could have been redeemed. Doing something bad but we could understand he had good intentions in mind (and it would have been a better deconstruction of the true love's kiss if he did kiss Anna and it didn't work and prince charming killing the evil queen in order to save the day). However, they hastily rewritten the script, turned Hans into a completely different character and ended up with an irredeemable sociopath.
Though I will admit that "If only there was someone out there who loved you" is a kickass line that should be used on Valentine's cards all the time.

I agree, Hans isn't redeemable--at least not in the sense that he could feasibly interact with Anna and Elsa anymore in any way other than as an antagonist.

Oh, no, I really hope I don't hate the arrangement. That would suck since I think Urie's voice is perfect to cover one of Menzel's songs in this film, and was really looking forward to it. I do hope I feel differently because I really wanted it to be good.

They could have used one of the elements from the original fairy tale with the tiny pieces of the mirror turning people evil if they touch them and filling them with dark intentions. Hans could have been an object in a more important plan. The whole thing linked to a prophecy regarding this dark magic and also giving a more complex and detailed backstory around Hans... (or I don’t know: just anything else for Hans!)
When you are a creator, an artist, you can always make a character evolve with the franchise like they apparently did with each of the main characters in Frozen II. If they did not give the same treatment with Hans, it’s because they TOOK that decision.

(And chose to treat the fans the same way.)

The blatant hypocrisy here astounds me. Jennifer Lee thinks Hans, a fictional character, is an irredeemable monster but John Lasseter is just misunderstood and a real ally to women just because he never did anything specifically to her. Give me a break.

The defense and worship of Hans is so creepy. The character is nice, for a villain. It's not exactly like OUAT where the murderers are family members and everyone has to put up with them. The only way they could redeem Hans is if we found out a witch had bewitched him the whole time, and who wants a whole sequel about Anna and Elsa running around in a plot about trying to free Hans of all things? And then he's redeemed, then what--a love triangle between Anna, Kristoff, and Hans? No thanks.
