Oops! I knew I forgot something. Rhapsody in Blue is indeed a great sequence and I do like the music and visuals of Pines of Rome as well. But the Firebird to me is the closest thing to a true "Fantasia" were ever going to get where the art and music have a perfect cohesive whole.

Finally, not an interview ends without the mention of traditional hand drawn animation. “Do you think it will ever return,” they ask? “And, when will that be?” I always answer, hand drawn animation will return to the big screen one day, however, it won't be anytime soon. My guess is the public will begin to yearn for this marvelous art form once they realize what they've lost. When this happens, I guarantee that this marvelous art form will make a comeback. However, don't hold your breathe because we're at least a decade away from that ever happening.

It is a shame it will be so long before hand drawn is back; in some ways it could be detrimental to have such a long wait, as there will be so much hype and build up for it, that it will inevitably disappoint people. Much like Princess and the Frog I suppose ?

I am enjoying the films Disney is putting out though in recent years, hand drawn or CGI not withstanding. I think a good Disney film is a good Disney film, no matter the medium.

I do look forward to seeing something new and hand drawn though again at some point in the future.

my concern about there being such a long wait for 2d's re-emergence is: by the time people want to see it again, who's going to be around to animate it? the current animators are in their late 40's, 50's & young animators are not being taught the technique anymore...

as for Moana & its 2d that looks like cgi style, the only thing I can think of is that maye it will be hand drawn(like use pencil drawings instead of wire frame models) but then instead of it being colored in with flat fields of color like in regular 2d it will use the textures & color gradients like those used to cover cgi models. Maybe theyve found a way to make it work so it looks nice & not too distracting, as thats a big deal for Lasseter. And I suppose the backgrounds would be regular cgi with a slightly painted look like in Tangled.

At least the last 2D film had a bit of effort thrown into it (unlike Home on the Rage).

And tbh in this new "Era" of films since PatF the one I liked the most was Ralph and before watching it I thought it was gonna blow. So exceptations are never good things.

BTW: I like Fantasia 2000 a lot, I find it very beautiful. Deal with it.

I just have a talk with my brother about the fate of hand drawn animation and it occur to me, because my brother's ex-girlfriend but still a friend has a tablet to draw a 2D hand drawn animation. She's not from Disney, she's doing it for fun. So if Disney is going to do hand drawn animation with today's tools and tablets, then that makes sense. Since maybe using paper is not going to be used anymore, then maybe John Lasseter was trying to tell the insidemovies reporter they still do hand drawn animation in a different kind of way without using on paper. We may not get to see hand drawn animated movie until the next decade, but I hope hand drawn animated shorts still lives on.

Just because we're not seeing features being made using it doesn't mean its not being taught and learned. Last I heard Disney's 2D animation program was still going strong. Its the vets that we're loosing more than anything. Not that this is a good thing, but wasn't a lot of the team that animated princess and the frog largely new blood? I don't think there's any real shortage of talent. I doubt there ever will be. Its the management that is holding these people back.

Remember when I said that John Lasseter is a coward for doing hand drawn animation? There's a proof in this article.

However, earlier this year there was an apparent gutting of the animation department yet again, with staff expressing their feeling that Lasseter "shied away" from committing to hand-drawn features.
