Glad to see you like something. :P

By the way, I have to ask ... You usually say that you find pretty much all CG humans to look like stiff plastic dolls. What do you think of what we've seen of Rapunzel so far. I think they look very organic and not plastic at all. I'd even go as far as to suggest that it were possible to touch the characters' skin it'd feel soft and squishy - flexible and malleable!

Hi Julian, thanks for the reply.

I'm going to be honest, I still feel like it could have been much better.
The characters look detailed and all, I agree, but they still feel like dolls.
Especially some of the guys from the pub or the little girls look like they came straight out of Toy Story. Also the eye movements look really unnatural and to me the characters emotions are fake. They say things and pull faces, but it's not coming from behind the eyes.

It's really a shame, because for example the design of Mother Gothel is amazing, bit I can't stand the way she moves her body and face, it's just so unnatural. Yes, her eyes are moving, but she's not alive.

I also see what you mean when you're talking about a certain "real-ness" when watching Rapunzel. But to me it's a wrong kind of real-ness. The real-realness is missing, but other things, like her skin for example it looks like real rubber, or some other kind of real material, but not skin.

I think they need to realise what's important in 3d animaton and that animation is not live action.

I think the 3d animation needs to evolve for another 50 years at least to make a decent film.
This is what computer games look like.

BUT

The strange thing is, that 5 years ago they made a test clip for Rapunzel, which looked amazing. It was CGI, but something like we've never seen before. Rapunzel did look organic, the image was painterly and the way her face moved and everything was extremely natural (not the strange slowmotion movements you see in the film now). And she was alive behind her eyes. It almost looked like 2d, painted. Like a moving painting.
Everything about her in that clip was spot on.
It's very weird and completely unbelievable to me that 5 years after that clip, the film turns out looking like it was made 10 years before that clip.

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kRO6EHhPr5g?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kRO6EHhPr5g?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

I think they can create a way less generic style with CGI, making it 1000 times more organic, fluid and real.
Like the style of the above clip.

You know what I think part of the problem is? Maybe 3d animation should look less "tangible" and more like, well, animation, painterly maybe, it is possible.

Here. I've reuploaded the copy of the soundtrack I got from Rapidshare earlier plus nomad2010's copy of the digital booklet.

Could it be the low-quality of the video makes it seem more organic? I wonder if it was HQ, it might be squeaky clean and more doll like.

Exactly. Also, her hair in this clip is one massive things with no hairs moving individually...

Bought the soundtrack as soon as I woke up this morning–I'm avoiding the score tracks, because I'm pretending I don't want to be spoiled at the moment (even though I already know most of the story by now).

I'm really enjoying Mandy's singing voice for Rapunzel–I've got friends who complain about her breathiness, which I can definitely hear it, but I find it adds a nice texture to contrast against the other Disney princesses while being still in that range.

They did a nice job finding an older woman to match Murphy's voice on "Prologue"–and the score is nicely creepy. It makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up without going over the top. Lovely!

"Mother Knows Best" is fantastic; all that cheerful passive aggression and a hint of her darker side! I think this is the standout song from Tangled.

"I've Got a Dream" really does remind me of the music from Muppet Treasure Island; it's really cute and I enjoy it, especially Flynn's section.

"I See the Light" is lovely; I love the guitar on it.

All in all, I really enjoy it–I didn't really like the music from The Princess and the Frog, but that's because I'm not the biggest Randy Newman fan. I liked it, and I can't wait to see the movie so I can hear the rest of the score (the only thing I'm unspoiled for, heh!).

GREAT SOUNDTRACK!!!!!!!!!
Mother knows best is the best song, I think, but there are some others real REAL good!! When will my life begin (Reprise 2) have to be breathtaking on the film, and so Mother knows best (Reprise).

Thanks for all the lyrics! But can someone upload the lyrics of "I've got a dream"??? It's the only one left to complete my lyric file =)

I don't want to really revisit the Lasseter discussion, but I'd like to point out one thing and I'll just leave it at that. Rotten Tomatoes scores for he last three feature films out of Disney before Lasseter took over versus the three films he gave the green light. With the retooled Meet the Robinsons in the middle:

Brother Bear 38%
Home on the Range 54%
Chicken Little 36%

Meet the Robinsons 66%

Bolt 88%
The Princess and the Frog 84%
Tangled 100% (only four reviews)

Compiled out of hundreds of reviews it's clear that no matter how little these movies made at the Box Office, quality hasn't just 'gone up', it's skyrocketed! Disney is making great movies now, and back during the whole SaveDisney drama, which not many of us were here for, that was all I wanted.

As for the soundtrack, it's on par with Hercules, Hunchback, Pocahontas in my opinion. Some great songs. Mother Knows Best and I've Got A Dream stand out to me. Catchy and with great lyrics.

Them what's seen the movie **recently** - can you tell me, is that the mix of "When Will My Life Begin" that they actually use?

I've got a bit of audio engineering in my past, and that sounds REALLY pop radio to me, very busy and compressed. It would sound crummy in a theater. I'm wondering if they took it upon themselves to "commercial it up" for the CD? Because I STILL don't remember it as being that "Radio Disney" when I heard it back in May.

(Side note ... I still haven't forgiven whoever drowned the Little Mermaid CD in the Cavernous Broadway Reverb Chamber from Hell. Whutwuredeythinkin?)

I actually like "When Will My Life Begin" better than I expected to. The second reprise is my favorite, though.

Love the theatricality and passive aggression of "Mother Knows Best" - it's hilarious!

I do think "Princess and the Frog" had an 'it' song with "Down in New Orleans", but the visuals didn't compliment it. I'd probably compare "When We're Human" with "I've Got a Dream", and I like the latter better... this score works for me more than Frog's because of the sensationalism, the romantic and theatrical underpinnings, and the wealth of lyrics in "Mother Knows Best" and "I've Got a Dream". Not sure how any of them will compare with Disney's long legacy of classics, but I'm more than satisfied with this soundtrack and can't wait to see them come to life!

Poody, the "hair dress" is very neat! That would make a great Lady Godiva, Venus on the Half Shell, or Eve costume!

Is she a natural brunette? Because she looks great with that wig on.

RIPJoeRanft wrote:Mandy sounds fantastic, but I did not like "When Will My Life Begin." I can't quite put my finger on it, but let me try. It sounds too much like a song straight out of High School Musical, too pop-sounding, too neat and loud and well-produced to entirely work successfully as an opener.
That is the problem I have with Mandy. She DOES sound fantastic, but she sounds more High School Musical than Classic Disney Princess who lives in an era gone by. I do love this song, but it seems like it belongs somewhere else (or in the credits). It is very "poppish". I don't mind her breathiness, just the whole pop-high school musical sound.

Edited to add:
Mainly it is just that song and her speaking voice that sounds too modern and pop musical to me. I actually think her singing in I See the Light and the Incantation is perfect.

After seeing the film I can say that "When Will My Life Begin" was my least favourite song in the film, and for the exact reason you mention. It felt extremely poppy and out of place.

I think they are catering to the High School Musical/Hannah Montana with that song. I will bet you beans that everyone under 19 will adore this song and will want to sing it.

I really do actually like it, but I just don't like it with the story, time, and place.

Can someone help me with this lyric?????

I have one word missing and I'm not sure the rest is allright!! =S

Look at the world so close
And I’m half way to it
Look at it all so big
Do I even dare?

Look at me at last
I just have to do it
Should I…?
No
Here I go

Just smell the grass, the dirt
Just like I dream they be
Just feel that summer breeze
The way it’s calling me
For like the first time ever
I’m completely free

I keep go running
And racing
And dancing
And chasing
And leaving
And bounding
And flying
And pounding
And splashing
And ???
And finally feeling
Now’s when my life begin
