Well, this is shaping up to be an actually decent prequel (as far as Disney's track record goes, anyway). For some reason, I'm thinking there's more to Marina Del Ray than meets the eye. Well, I'm hoping anyway. I just wonder where Kenneth Mars disappeared to? He's done nearly EVERYTHING involving King Triton, even in pointless crap nobody watches.

PS

Although Pat Carroll is a wonderfully divine voice actress, noone can be perfect all the time (ie: squid/octopus). Also, Ursula technically does have eight arms, considering her two human appendages.

I know what the Disney people were thinking when creating Ariel's mon: how are we going to present sthing completely unexpected to the audience? what is the least expected design for Ariel's mother? To look exactly like Ariel, of course. I mean we all had a feeling she was going to remind us of Ariel, but her being an Ariel clone was completely unexpected. However, I would like to see a more interesting design for Athena.
Marina is great! She resembles the squid/octopus/whatever sisters (Ursula and Morgana) but she's a mermaid and a lot more colorful. I think there's more to see from her in the movie than just being tired of taking care of Triton's daughters - if that's what she does.
My favourite part was the one with the pirates. I don't know if they do something to Athena, the sure thing is that they steal the Merpeople's musical instruments. We'll see.
I'm really excited about this film!

Okay, just watched the clip with audio... and, all but Triton, I loved it!!! I wonder how old Kenneth Mars and Pat Caroll are, because that could have played a factor in the new voices and characters. But, wow, Triton really sounds bad.
I loved the animation. Very pretty, and I don't think Athena was Ariel's clone. I think Athena is very, very similar, but defintely not the same. And I hope she's in the movie long enough to know her a bit and hear her voice.
I believe this movie could actually be better than Cindy 3. At least it seems like Disney listened to the fans. I mean, were people really calling for a Cinderella time-travel movie? No, but people really wanted a prequel of The Little Mermaid, a prequel that featured Ariel's mom. Up to this point, I didn't think we'd see Ariel's mom. Maybe some mentions, and possibly a portrait, but to get animated clips, is just too much to ask for! Even if she doesn't have a single line, it's still splendid to know a bit more about Ariel's background, even if it's a Sound of Music rip-off (which I don't personally think it is, maybe just a bit similar, but not the same).

Here's to hope! :D

Isn't it possible that MDR could be Ursula? :p

I think it's very possible. But the question then, is why use Sally Fields?

hmm jst throwin this out there but the shading really bugs me. jst cuz they have the tech to do it i dont think they should, it completely seperates it from the original style from the first film. They didnt use exessive shading in cinderella 3 which i think made it more consistant/vintage ya know?
p.s. one of ariel's sisters is voiced by the women who played cinderella in the third movie!

Really, did Jennifer Hale voice one of the sisters? Normally I can pick her out, but I didn't notice anything. Maybe I need to watch it again.

Well, I suppose maybe there was some sort of accident, or something.

Marina Del Ray: ....Is that...Is that MY voice? Oh well!

You can totally tell Jennifer Hale is the voice of Alana.

And I always imagined Arista having the val-speak kinda voice that Andrina has in the clip.

I love we get so much more of the sisters! YAYAYAYAYAYAY!

And I am not feeling the fact that Ariel's mom looks just like Ariel. The non matching purple shells, even her 80's wave!!!

I think Marina Del Ray is actually Ursula. I mean, there are too many similarities between them! This can't be ignored! Other than that, those creatures she sets free are the same as those creaures ursula "owns" (dont know their name in english, sorry lol)

And yes, she is a mermaid. AT FIRST!

I would guess she started using black magic, and becuase of that, she turned into that ugly squid-thing. Same goes for morgana.

well that's just my guess :D what do you guys think?

This image I find interesting...seems her sisters are split on their feelings over her humming. Seems some of them are happy and excited at hearing music.

I agree. In the preview Ariel seemed to be very, very young. Her sisters were older. They know what happened to their mother, why music is banned, and why Triton is so over protective. Later in the throne room, Ariel is arguing with Triton, when her sister tells her to "let it go". The sisters obviously know more to the story than Ariel does.

That's actually a very great theory, and it makes a lot more sense than having the entire family know about their mother's death EXCEPT Ariel.

Triton's voice? Perhaps they used a different voice on purpse. Technically, he is supposed to be... maybe, 11 or 12 years younger at the beginning (with the pirates) and probably one or two years younger throughout the rest of the film, maybe they wanted to use a younger voice? I didn't really notice that much of a difference until someone brought it up.
Disney Villain wrote:Did anyone else notice that King Triton has a different voice? He sounds like his voice work is being done by Jim Cummings.
I also noted that. He's the one who did Tigger and the guy from Pocahontas, right? If I recall, he was the singing voice of Pocahontas' father and my iTunes lists his name for "The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers", could it be possible that Triton will be having some singing roles, thus why he had a voice change?

As for Marina del Ray being Ursula, I don't think so. There'd be too many plot holes. Although there are a few lines in the original that support this theory (ie: "back when I lived in the palace"), the idea itself would be a little over-dramatic. I like the idea of Ursula and Morgana coming in later, rather than always being there from the start. Morgana says that their mother called Ursula "Ursula", not "Marina".

Also, does anyone notice a pattern?

Aquata
Andrina
Arista
Atina
Adella
Alana
Athena
Ursula
Morgana
Marina

Hmm... lol

Oh, and one last thing:
Someday... wrote:Guess you can trust some of wikipedia.
I don't think that's fair at all. "Shake Senora" was included in the musical preview on the DVD. It's highly unlikely that they would include something like that, and then dump it at the last minute. Speaking of, why did they redo that scene completely? I'm not sure if the audio is different yet, since it wasn't synchronized correctly, but it's pretty obvious that they did redo it.

Marina even uses an ursula type bodice piece, instead of the average shell bikini top thing...

hmmm...coincidence or lack of imagination? lol

Oh my gosh ! Oh my gosh ! !

This has undoubtedly made my day, thank you for letting everyone know! Well, here are my thoughts:

* The storyline ... I think its just wonderful! I agree with Disney Villain on this; it is one of the great Disney Classic mysteries. In the first film, it is obvious that Ariel and Triton have some issues, and it is so interesting to see what events played out to cause this.

Personally, I think its a brilliant idea to have Ariel being the spit image of her mother; it accounts for so many things: Why Triton has always had more of a special bond with his daughter and why he is so over-protective of her going to the surface and having anything to do with humans. Ariel is the last daughter she had, and the last thing they had together, so that would make Ariel so speical to him. And how Ariel's sisters are always slightly appart from her; Ariel is usually doing her own thing with Flounder etc, so is it a possibility that they are reminded everytime they see Ariel, of their mother?

Of course, music is banned due to her mother's death; is it possible that no-one knew of Ariel's beautiful voice ? Or did Triton know how lovely it was, and banned music later on, when Ariel was a bit older and her voice had developed? As Ariel clearly knows what music is from the clips we have seen. Ariel obviously has no clue as to why music is banned in the clip, and her sisters do, this is probably why she is trying to force the issue of understanding why.

Ariel is holding the musc box which presumably belonged to her mother when they are being chased. Did she discover it Melody-style like the locket, or was it given to her by Sebastian or Triton ? Or even Mel de Ray, in some form of a wicked plot ?

From what I have seen of the storyline, I just want more! Fantastic job to the wirters; and it does seem as if they have listened to the fans slightly on this, wanting to know more of Ariel's mother etc.

* The animation seems very fluid on-model; Ariel, Flounder Sebastian and co are drawn extremely well, up to and possibly above Cinderella: A Twist In Time's animation. The backgrounds are lovely as well. I think Athena's character design looks a lot like Ariel in TLM II when she was a bit older ; anyone else think that?

* I loved Ariel's sisters voices, and of course Jodi Benson is perfect again in her role as Ariel. Its great to see Sam Wright back as Sebastian, but a shame about Kenneth Mars. I wonder what the reason behind his replacement was? Sally Field is superb - I didnt realise how good and funny she could be with her voice!

* Did anyone notice, right in the beginning of the clip, where it said, "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning sneak peek, an all new movie etc", that the very same fish that the title 'The Little Mermaid' was displayed over in the first movie made an appearance here? Do you think this is where the titles for this film will be shown, in homage ?

I only wish they could have shown Ariel singing a song, and have some sort of continuity when showing the clips; the 8 minute montage in Cinderella III was put togtehr better I feel.

I know I've rambled on, but I am just so 100% excited and happy for this movie to come out! :D
