So, as some of you may know, there were rallies all over the country today in every state (I believe) to make our voices heard about Prop 8 in California and Amendment 2 here in Florida. I had some friends attend them in Massachusetts and South Carolina. I went to one at City Hall in downtown Orlando today with some friends of mine and there was a good few hundred people there. It was inspiring to see so many of us coming together and fighting for our rights, and alongside others all over the country as well.

Just wondering if any of you attended any rallies?

There's one tomorrow afternoon in the city near my college. But I'm at home here for the weekend and have to stay here until evening for a dinner, so I won't be able to go. Boo :(

Just to get the ball rolling on the topic again, today I attended an interesting discussion my center volunteered for to discuss our views on GLBT community. Our group Allies asked about gathering a diverse group for a Q&A panel session for one of our college's Psychology in Prejudice class, and I decided to volunteer to speak, and there was a group about 6 of us together.

I thought it was a particularly interesting discussion, especially the questions the classmates directed at me and the rest of us. We were asked about our relationships, dealing with coming out, if we encountered any sexism with relatives or friends, our views on the passing of Prop 8, if homosexuality should be discussed in schools more openly in the classroom, will we think homophobia will be viewed as a thing of the past eventually like slavery, and others. I just felt very excited to be able to participate in the discussion with the others, and able to answer questions others had about me, and on all of our views on the topic. It was a very enlightening experience, and interesting the questions that the other students brought to us. There's another panel discussion coming up for another class that I'm already signed up for, and I'm really looking forward to be participating in that one as well. :)

It seems great PPF! and I wish you the best of lucks on your participation; defending what you believe will be sometimes a hard, yet one of the most important task ever!

Recently I got an idea bout one of my next vids, how does it relate to the topic??? well it's gon'na be dedicated to the LGBT community, you guys puted so much efforts of opening our eyes to accept everybody for themseleves. I'll start this project when I finish the college program

Save You: A proper sequel to "Miss You", it'll focus on LGBT community. It'll showcase famous cases, Matthew Shepard, Brandon Teena and Gwen Araujo.

The vid will also showcase the contributions that were made to the LGBT again I'm doin this vid to show my respect for the LGBT community.

I'm not gay, although some friends of mine thought maybe I was.
And I'm from The Netherlands; the first country in the world to 'legalize' same-sex marriage in 2001! 8)

Anyway, this week 'Newsweek' has a great article on gay marriage I'm sure you all would like to read:

Our Mutual Joy
Opponents of gay marriage often cite Scripture. But what the Bible teaches about love argues for the other side.

I came out to my parents last night, in the worst way possible--through a fight, of course! Gah. And my parents have reacted the best way that I could’ve expected: Ignoring me. My mother doesn’t seem to care, but my dad’s avoiding me. Or it might just be I’m avoiding him. Either way, we’re not speaking. I told my mom this morning, “I know it’s not the best news in the world for you, but it’s not like the whole family didn’t already know it.”

I don’t really know why I did it really. I’ve just been thinking about how I’m turning 20 on Tuesday and I didn’t want the next decade of my life to be as bad as the past one. I felt so proud, happy and free at the time, but nervous and terrified, too. I might have to move out soon if my father wants me out, but I’d rather be out of their life (and they out of mine) and real for the first time than locked up and lying about myself. Sorry if my coming out story sounds cliché, but that’s how it happened. Just thought I should post it here. It felt important, anyway.

I never officially came out. Like everything else about me, the parents had to accept it. We've had bigger fights over grades, politics, movies, cleaning the house, etc.

I don't know what other peoples' parents are like. But good luck all around. If they don't like it, try to make them see what it will be like without you.

Glad you liked it...It's a film called Another Gay Movie and it's a parody of American Pie in which 4 gay teens vow to lose their virginity before college. I think it's hilarious and well worth checking out! The title tune is by 60s legend Nancy Sinatra.

The Eartha Kitt video was pulled by the poster so here's another classic by Eartha in a similar style. You'll love it. Eartha was a great friend to the gay community.

Enjoy this both as a tribute to Ms Kitt and a salute to our gayness.

Disney's Divinity: I dedicate this to your coming out!
It's a video of 2 famous TV gay couples Brian & Justin of Queer As Folk and Luke & Noah of As The World Turns.

I think it is so sad so many people have to go through so much pain, just because of who they are. I can't imagine parents ignoring or fighting with their children because of who they are. Shouldn't a parent love their child no matter what? Fighting over it; what is it good for? Is it worth losing your children over it?

I'm sorry if I may have added more sadness to your story by my out-loud 'pondering', but I just am so heart-broken when I read stories like yours. I'm glad you feel proud of yourself, but at the same time I realize it is sad you have to be proud of just being you. Meaning: it is ridiculous people even have to 'come out', like it's a dirty secret or terrible crime or something. Why wouldn't it be the best news in the world for them? It certainly isn't the worst.

I'm happy for you. It's good you chose to lead your life the way you want it (I mean being open about it; not that I think being gay is a choice). I jut wish people would accept some people just love other people of their own sexe. What's so terrible about love? I don't get it... :(

Because people are confused and enraged by love. You'd think that by the 21st century people could be a little understanding.

Glad to see people using this thread again. I mean it's been so long since we talked about how awesome and amazing we are. and I think now is a good time too to make Divinity feel better.

I guess this is a rare chance for me to show my sensitive side...

I'm sure the parents are just confused, scared, and - though I find this one quite hard to believe - unprepared for their children to be different than the ideal the parents have in their head for them. You know, I've heard a lot of "I just can't take another..." take your pick: disappointment, heartbreak, defiance, stunt...from parents. And it's not just when their child turns out to be gay. Sometimes it's when their son or daugher dates someone outside their race, frick- even when they date someone of different political leanings! Oh yeah, it gets that ridiculous with some people.

I think, point being- parents kind of find themselves having to make all the decisions for their children for so many years, it's hard for them to know when to stop. To know when the son/daughter is ready to think for themselves and make their own decisions.

I really feel like this isn't just a "coming out" issue. Parents can't seem to stop themselves from forming a picture of what their kid has to be, or else they've failed as parents - and of course, you know how much heat parents take in the media whenever there's a new American Nightmare story = "where were the parents?!!" when the next Columbine or something like that should happen... "What's happened to our good, old-fashioned American morality?!!" Etc. Whenever there's Public-Outrage, the aggressors always take it to the parents. Because Parents are the most paranoid, having the most to fear for (their family), and feel they have the most to lose.

Anyway, to pull the focus back to the more personal issue of parents' hearts not correctly advising them on matters of love: this pattern of parents obsessing over their childrens'... destinations can be based on pride, egotism, distrust of the world, etc. So then they're faced with having to act out to make their dreams of the perfect child's life into a reality.

And no- I can't believe I'd ever make a post that sympathized with parents either. It's just that, for all the evils Parents and Adults unleash upon the Earth... they have to be human, or else it wouldn't do so much damage. And frighteningly enough... We may not all be parents, but we will BE our Parents one day. I trust that that actually does happen.
