Not every time but it has happened to me more than once. It also depends on what you're buying. DVDs may not that be that embarrassing to purchase but if you're into collecting dolls or plushies or whatever is much worse.

Do you go there alone or do you take your kids with you?

I really don't care what somebody thinks of me when I'm buying a Disney DVD. I always buy them in stores, never online. I'm almost sort of proud when I buy them, I'm not ashamed of the fact that I'm a Disney fan but I never got a bad response when I bought one either.

But to be honest: when I buy a Disney DVD (here in The Netherlands they're really expensive and I only buy them when there's some sort of sale and you get the 2nd DVD for free) I never see kids at the Disney DVD section, only adults :P So it's not like I'm the only adult amongst a lot of kids :P

SWillie, I live in New Jersey--I wish I knew why folks around here can be so judgemental, but I don't. All I can do is try to avoid & protect myself from them and whatever their issues may be.

Although really I don't think geographical location matters much....sadly there are jerks everywhere. :P

I've never actually asked to have something for me giftwrapped, but I HAVE asked for gift reciepts. Makes those trips to Toys R Us less awkward.

ive never encountered judgement when buying anything kid related, whether its dvds or toys. i have no kids, just a neice and 2 nephews, but they are never with me when i buy.
i guess it helps that my town is small enough that most check out workers know me by face if not name. i actually get more funny looks from people who know me when i buy "normal" items like clothes or food as opposed to toys and disney movies.

i keep my hair quite short and, even wearing a shirt where my "twins" arent hidden too much, i get called sir, lad, young man, boy and every other male term you can think of. i look at it as a safety thing. if customers think im a guy, then it feels safer for my other co workers [im really protective] so you can guess that being judged over purchases is the least of my worries.

I concur - though I've never used false excuses when buying Disney DVDs. Dolls, on the other hand... :?

Sotiris why would they think that if you just decline to have it gift wrapped? I would take that as "well, there is either no need to wrap it or they want to wrap it themselves." Although most probably don't even think that deep. "Would you like this gift wrapped?" "No, thanks." The end. I think you think of people as much more in-depth thinkers at work then they really are. Most people could honestly not care less.

Also, to add my answer to your question to reyquila - I go to all those same places - Wal Mart, Target, Best Buy, etc... and usually go alone.

At the risk of going completely off-topic, Rey and I went into a couple of comic shops today since I'm looking for one of the Darkwing Duck graphic novels (I grabbed the second one from a shop last week and would like to get the first as well). The guy at the first shop didn't have it (only the individual issues), but was extremely cordial and recommended a few other places to try. (And yes, I realize I can order it off Amazon but I was hoping for the instant gratification of finding it locally).

The second shop focused mainly on games; comics seemed like an afterthought and there wasn't much of a selection. When I asked if they had the book, the guy gave me the weirdest look and the worst attitude, as if he wanted to know why the heck they'd bother carrying something like that. He did look it up to see if he could order it, but said it wasn't available. However, was I interested in something else that was available . . . ?

Heck no. Give me an attitude like that in your store and I won't be buying anything from you. :p Long story short, if people judge me for what I'm buying, it's really their problem, not mine.

To add to the giftwrapping thing, a lot of people also don't want to sit and wait for the item to be giftwrapped - or don't have the time at all to sit and wait. I have only been asked twice if I wanted something wrapped and that was when I bought jewellery for my Mother at Christmas and just the other day for her birthday. Even at Christmas I've never been asked if I wanted any items wrapped up (save for the previous purchase mentioned) though that could also be due to most stores here not offering it to begin with.

Much like SWillie I've never had a cashier who scoffed, smirked, raised an eyebrow or commented on me buying something in a 'This is embarassing' manner. I've been id'ed or I've had a friendly chat over a movie briefly if the line is long. Aside from that I've only had to say "This came up wrong in price" (Our Wal-Mart is great at the dvds being charged more than it says)

Do I care what people think? Not when it comes to DVD's or anything that isn't a personal product. The only time I can think of where it would be embarassing to buy a dvd is if certain personal products were tossed in due to the convenience of getting all the shopping done in one trip ;)

For the record, I DO get where you're coming from, SWillie---it's like, if you don't want people to see Disney movies/animation/whatever as "kiddie stuff," why pretend you're buying it for a kid? But as you see, plenty of people have had times where folks who don't get that these so-called kid's movies are not just for kids simply don't understand and make sure they let you know they don't approve. I don't need some idiot's approval to do what I want, but I'm also not interested in trying to "educate" them, or causing a scene in a public place.

It's just easier to say "It's for my little sister's birthday" and get on with my life (and then come and commiserate with all the intelligent animation fans here 8) ).

Is that a rhetorical question? This is Reyquila, the man who destined to become the #1 Disney Master. He gotta catch em all.

Jackoleen wrote:Dear Super Aurora,

When I was in college, I only ordered adult catalogues, searched online, and printed animated Disney porno. I always prayed to God that the computer wouldn't break down while I was looking at any type of porno. I'm glad that that situation never occurred.

In my opinion, "Disney stuff" isn't exactly "nothing" (Alice, Aladdin and Jasmine, Hercules and Megara, Megara, even George and Judy Jetson-and I still have the pages in a file folder from way back when) but, then again, I haven't really taken a good look at Hentai, either.

Oh. I also owned handcuffs (they're in a bag with tons of other "CONFIDENTIAL" stuff now), but I never used them.

OOPS! The discussion is getting to be rather off-topic. I guess that the Torture Chamber for the Naughty is around here somewhere?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

I agree to a certain extent. I wasn't embarressed at all to check out the Aladdin dvd, or Tarzan. But when it came to The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, I used my non-existing little niece as an excuse.
Chernabog_Rocks wrote:Now, if you want to talk about being embarassed about purchases I'd agree very easily on condoms and ky jelly or even underwear to an extent. ;)
I've never understood why people are embarressed to buy condoms. You're buying something that screams: "I'm getting laid!" How is it embarrassing to buy something that signals you're going to fuck a hot chick? :P :D

With regards to buying Disney movies-

Post by Jackoleen »

Dear Disney Enthusiasts,

With regards to buying Disney movies, I don't think that I've ever been given any strange looks. I've even bought Disney coloring books, and I've never been given any strange looks. Of course, the fact that I look as though I'm much, much, much younger than 32 helps!

I used hate being a Barbie enthusiast during college, though. I was buying dolls when I roomed alone, so I wasn't having to hide them from roommates, but my cousin's wife and daughter used to shop at the same store from which I bought many of the dolls that I was buying, and I'd literally hide from them in order to avoid them, because my cousin's wife wanted their daughter to grow up quickly, and she did NOT like the idea that any adult could enjoy dolls. I'll never forget the experiences of hiding Barbie dolls in the basket, turning around in mid-isle in order to hide, etc.

If other Americans cannot deal with Disney enthusiasts, doll enthusiasts, etc., then they need to at least tell us exactly WHAT they expect us to love, with the understanding that we WON'T necessarily obey them. Do they expect grown men to collect executive pens? Do they think that all women should drown themselves in baby bottles, tequilas, and diaper bags? Maybe we're all supposed to be boring people who keep nothing in our houses, and who have nothing better to say except for "Hi, Honey! How was your day?", and "Did you give Fido his Advantage today? Did you get Kay-Lynne to gymastics practice on time? Is she still on that all-soy diet that Dr. Good put her on? Am I all caught up on my pilates exercizes, so that I can get drunk with the other real housewives again?" Great Caesar's Ghost, I'm shurr! Some people are actually enthusiastic about something other than Segrams and Huggies and Herbal Essences!

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Sorry, this made me think of the ridiculous old Herbal Essences commercials; some people really do have little interest in anything else. :p

Consumer Products revenues for the quarter increased 5% to $626 million and segment operating income increased 7% to $142 million as improvements at the Disney Store North America and Merchandise Licensing were offset by a decrease at Publishing.

The increase at the Disney Store North America was primarily due to comparable store sales growth and improved margins reflecting the strength of Tangled and Toy Story merchandise. Improved Merchandise Licensing results reflected the strong performance of Cars and Tangled merchandise.
