The Little Mermaid on Broadway

Post by Disney Duster »

I didn't really like that "World Above" animation, I recognized a lot of borrowing from animation in other parts of the original movie. But it is neat and not a bad effort.

Anyway, there's this really interesting new book called The Little Mermaid: From the Deep Blue Sea to the Great White Way. It details the life of the story from Hans Christian Anderson's original to Disney's reinvention and then Broadway's reinvention. It's heavily illustrated and has lots of behind the scenes stuff. It calls the musical a hit now in New York.

Is it really a hit?

But anyway, this book sounds great...but why would I read about all the detail behind a show I don't think they tried enough on? So, I'm wondering if maybe it will reveal how great it could have been and what good things were planned for it, and then how it turned into a mess.

I think the show is a hit. I mean, it making lots of money. People who aren't hardcore theater fans seem to enjoy the show.

I'm looking forward to this book. I've got a feeling that it's going to be beautiful. It may even tell more on why they changed things from what was originally conceived to what the show is today.

Now, I haven't seen the show, but from the many many clips I've seen, the show is a good effort. It could have been better, but it's still not bad. If I were the director or the book writer, there are other choices I would have made. I still think people are still mad that Vanessa is not in the show, which is disappointing, but still, what can you do? You really can't please everyone. The show dared to be different, and that's what it achieved. I also think lots of people were expecting TOO MUCH from the show, and were just disappointed that those said expectations were not fulfilled.

Only 176 pages? Good luck on giving a full history with just that many pages, especially if they're planning on filling a lot of space with pictures.

Well, the show's probably a hit in the sense that it makes money. But does it have much value beyond that? Probably not. I don't think excising Vanessa from the plot killed the show, as it could've worked regardless if done well.

The brown-haired Ariel clone who sports all of Ursula's sex appeal.

(I might've found a better picture from Google if HSM didn't exist)

What a lovely little bride I'll make, my dear I'll look divine.

Things are working out according to my ultimate design.

Soon I'll have that little mermaid and the ocean will be mine...

 Vanessa Hudgens, who else would we be talking about? Just kidding.

Vanessa is a character that appears in The Little Mermaid who is actually Ursula in disguise. She uses Ariel's voice to cast a spell on Prince Eric all part of her plan to take over the Ocean. oooh I wonder what VanessaFan would think if he read that lol.

Oh, that Vanessa.

It's just, y'know... actually, I'm not going to bother. This probably isn't the best thread in which to bad-mouth 'The Little Mermaid'.

If you want to bad-mouth the musical you can do that. I do it all the time here.

Well, you know, he can still bad mouth it if he wants to. Otherwise we'd just be all patting each others' backs all long, and where would we be then?

FINALLY got my TLMoB songbook.

Here's a clip of me singing The World Above. I think in a bit of parts I screwed up on the lyrics, but it was lke "Hey, I'm not losing the notes"

Man has a dream
And that's the start
He follows his dream
With mind and heart
And when it becomes a reality
It's a dream come true
For you and me!

I was just watching the Little Mermaid on Broadway feature on the new Ariel's Beginning DVD, and I didn't realize they filmed the whole show, or at least more than I thought. I had no idea that they had She's In Love filmed at the length that they did. I wish it would leak online!

I want to go see this show again so bad!
