Disney is for everyone. I mean, it appeals to all ages. My mom enjoyed Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas. She used to accompany me to a Disney movie when I was little and she always end up enjoying the fim. :)

By the way, thanks for the suggestion Disney-Fan and also Dottie for liking my signature. :)

Well it sounds like they care about you and what happens to you but obviously they've got the wrong idea about an appreciation for Disney animation and story telling. They are just not understanding that this is about an art form. I think if they sat down and watched some of the "making of" documentaries on the DVDs like the one that came with Snow White or Fantasia, they would see it in a new light. It reminds me of the nonsense I put up with from my parents back in 1977 when I turned punk rock.... until I finally got my dad to go to a concert and he had to admit it was really exciting. After that, I was able to renegotiate my curfew so I could go to clubs and see bands! :P

BTW, when you first posted this I thought your parents objection had to do with you spending the money (that's a problem I have around here with my husband: "What?! Another Disney DVD?! We are going to the poor house!") :lol

Well, too many pages for me to read everything here, so I just want to say that this is one of my most anticipated DVDs ever. I LOVE this movie (just hope I'm not broke when it comes out, ha). I sincerely hope it has a TON of great extras (haven't read what all will be on it yet), including that Jodi Benson video from the last VHS release and some great behind the scenes stuff. I really hope there's some footage of Sherri Stoner doing the live-action reference stuff too! I have been in love with Ariel since this came out, which meant I was in love with Jodi's voice and Sherri Stoner in general (since she seemed to be Ariel incarnate when I would watch those behind the scenes things as a kid). I even won an essay contest to write why I was the biggest Disney lover out there, and I think the part about how in love with Ariel I was really put me over the edge, ha. I collect Ariel stuff like mad (along with Tink, my other TOP Disney girl, though Belle and Kim Possible aren't far behind). So, to sum up, I'm really, REALLY excited about this release!

  Sorry, but that made me laugh. Seriously though..that's scary that your parents think that.

I think that you should sit down and talk with your parents about this attitude. I can understand how they can see Disney as children's entertainment (it is suitable for kids, after all), but that doesn't mean to say that the majority of their films (at least the animated ones) are fun for adults. Adults make these films, of course. And the paeodophile accusations aren't nice...I am sure that most people on this board are rightly against paedophilia. Anyway, you could tell them to look at things in prespective. My parents are mild Disney fans (aka they like a lot of their films, but wouldn't go out of their way to watch them), but my mother said that despite people possibly finding me weird for liking things like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, they should at least appreciate me for watching more of these types of films as opposed to some of the stupid films that people my age regularly watch (aka dumbass comedies like White Chicks, porn).

That's quite a good idea, Pluto Region1. Like I said, nachonaco, explain to them that adults make these films, that they put effort into them and like them, and that they're all happily married/aren't creepy perverts. :D

I wish I could go to the El Capitan Theatre. Lucky are those who can see the first digital presentation of TLM at the big screen.

I guess that would be so incredibly awesome, seeing TLM there. I can't remember seeing TLM in theater, because I was only 2 years old. :)

I never got to see The Little Mermaid in theatres. :( The earliest Disney movies I remember seeing in theatres was Rescuers Down Under and Beauty and the Beast, followed of course by Aladdin. Disney should definately re-release TLM for its 20th anniversary. I would go see it everyday... Im not even kidding about that.

I'm sorry nachonaco, but that is just too hilarious. I mean really-- that's like saying everyone online who eats meat is a cold-blooded killer.

I saw it twice in theaters. When I was 4 and it first came out. I remember clinging to my dad's arm when Ursula got big at the end and was about to kill Eric. I was so scared! Then I saw it during the re-release in 98? I can't remember. I was around 12 and even though we had the VHS, we still went and it was cool to see on the big screen again. I wish they would have done an imax release or something cool for it's anniversary. It marks the begining of the golden age of animation during my generation and deserves a little more respect.

I don't know if I saw Little Mermaid in theatres......but I saw Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas.

I am picking up the DVD for me, for my 5 year old niece who LOVES Disney Princesses (Cinderella is her favorite - got that for her last year) and probably a copy for my 7 year old niece. In fact, my 5 year old niece and I have this huge joke planned. My dad's birthday is in October and we'll probably go to her house for his birthday (unless we have a surprise party for him - since its his 60th). Anyway, the plan is for me to jokingly give my dad a copy of "The Little Mermaid". However, the trick is there will be a note on the dvd that says "Whoops, dad, this isn't your present! Its Gemma's!"

I wonder if they'll rerelease Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea sometime after the plantinum edition? They rereleased Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's adventure after all.
Disney Channel died when they stopped airing movies with Haley mills (Parent Trap and Pollyanna) and fun adventure movies like Swiss Family Robinson. R.I.P. the REAL Disney Channel. Date of Death: When the shows became teenie bopperish.

I'm going to see it tomorrow night at El Capitan. I bought the ticket last week and I'm very excited. This will be the first time I've EVER seen this movie. Plus there's the added feature of the panel discussion. Is anyone else from this forum going?

I wonder why Disney doesn't do at least a limited run in theaters of some of these mega-hits? when was the last time they re-released a classic in the theaters? I would think this film would rank a limited run re-release to the theaters... At least if they did a limited large-city release people could travel to whatever nearest large city to see it. Judging by the interest here in this thread (now a whopping 50+ pages) I would suspect there would be a lot of people who remember this film as a kid and now have kids and would love to take their child to see it. Perhaps it is just too expensive nowadays to put the film in theaters and promote it based on what they think they would accomplish in terms of added DVD sales?

I still can't believe the release is so close. I am just dying, anticipating the time when I'll finally have mi favorito in my hands. Normally, I'll wait until the weekend to pick up a new DVD, but I'll be rushing out from classes the 3rd to get a copy.. or two.

Did anyone ever hear anything more on this supposed "gift set" at best buy? I was on their site earlier and it still comes up in the search results, but the link no longer works.

I emailed the people at disneyinfo, and they said this:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding THE LITTLE MERMAID Collector's Gift Set. We
appreciate your interest.

THE LITTLE MERMAID is tentatively scheduled for release on October 3, 2006. We
have no details regarding a Collector's Gift Set at this time.

Please feel free to contact us closer to the October release date for further
details.

Again, thank you for taking the time to contact us.

Regards,

WDHE Consumer Relations
US and Canada

I guess there won't be a TLM Gift Set like we were all hoping. I hope that Fantasia will get a Gift Set :D
