My opinions...

Post by Jackoleen »

Dear Disney Enthusiasts,

I sort of like Mandy Moore's singing voice, although I'm not crazy about it, because it CAN become quite nasal and pinchy at times.

Then again, I am not super crazy about Gothel's voice during "Mother Knows Best"; I think that the reprise of that song is more exciting, with regards to Gothel's singing voice.

I must admit that I was afraid that Rapunzel would sound like Sissy Spacek, circa about 1980, only worse! The promo. pics of Rapunzel make her LOOK like Spacek, anyway...I just KNOW that when I'm watching the movie, there'll be SOME point at which I'll say, "OMG, Rapunzel is Carrie White, Flynn Rider is Tommy Ross, and Mother Gothel is Margaret White as a raven-haired woman! NOOO!" All of those images of the "chin in her hand" Rapunzel make Rapunzel look almost exactly like Spacek's Carrie!

Well, I HOPE that Rapunzel is individualistic enough that I don't start comparing "Tangled" to ANY other movies. I'm afraid, though, that some people are right when they say that the storyline, the types of included songs, and the song lyrics, sort of sound as though they've been heard many times before...

My other slight, and potential, issue with the movie deals with the fear that the character of Flynn Rider will be used so that young audiences will see that all men must become putty in the hands of all women...

SPOILER WARNINGS FOR "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST", "HERCULES", AND "THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG"...

I mean, far too many Disney heroes have sacrificed their dreams, the goals that they started out with, etc., all because some sexy little dame spritzed the pink perfume of femininity into their eyes! In some ways, it's NOT pleasant to think about the fact that The Beast can't really get much credit for his own salvation, or the fact that Hercules actually wants to be a powerless nobody so that he can love a liar and a conwoman, or that Prince Naveen is mothered into submission by Tiana!

I really, really, really don't want to see Flynn Rider give up on his own dreams just because he has to lead, father, and placate Rapunzel so that HER pretty, fluffy little pink dreams can triumph. If THAT happens (Ie: Flynn has to sacrifice for the relationship, while Rapunzel only takes, takes, takes...), I'm more than likely gonna feel as though I've downed 10 bottles of Pepto Bismol in one sitting.

I will also be angry if Rapunzel is the next Disney heroine who refuses to fight back when she's hit, or when she's thrown to the ground. I want to know that Disney heroines will fight back when they're attacked.

I am not saying that my ideas about the movie won't ever be more positive; I'm just saying that I smell a rehash, and a stereotypical rehash, at that.

If "Tangled" turns out to BE a tired, reheated serving of all of the old Disney stereotypes, I can always hope that the NEXT movie is more fresh and exciting!

I like the idea of Rapunzel, Flynn, and the frying pan/ self-defense weapon, though...

Thank you in advance for your replies.

Jackoleen, unless Disney ever does an animated version of "Xena: Warrior Princess", I don't think we are going to see an aggressive princess who fights back like that.

OK, now that I think about it, I would love to see an animated Xena kicking butt. (just don't even think about reminding me of that awful Hercules and Xena cartoon that already exists, lol)

Wow the queen is really pretty. I wish Rapunzel looked like that instead. I really like that first set of Rapunzel sketches though, especially the 4th pic from the left. She looks more mature and beautiful than the 'cute' pixie nosed final version. I know I seem kind of negative but I cannot wait until the movie comes out; I've been waiting for years and I hope it's as fanatastic as people have been saying

Most Disney heroes don't really even have any well defined dreams. And the Beast had a great part in his own salvation; he changed and became selfless and kind which is why Belle fell in love with him. And if his dream was becoming human again, that change was necessary otherwise they never would have fallen in love and he would have been a beast forever. Just because Belle was the final key in changing him back doesn't mean his contribution was small.

Also just because Hercules gave up his powers to be with Megara does not mean he became a 'nobody'; the fact that he still managed to defeat a huge monster when his powers were gone pretty much demonstrates that. He had already accomplished part of his dream of becoming a great famous hero, and it's unlikely people's memory of his heroism would disappear like his powers. I guess he did give up his dream of becoming a god, but it's not like Megara was a liar and a conwoman by choice, she had a deal with Hades but saved Hercules' life in the end.

So... Naveen should have remained a lazy selfish jerk forever?

RodryCroft, those are fantastic! We've seen some of those before, but as photographed papers, not scans.

While I know I'll enjoy Tangled as it is now, I'm still going to wonder fondly about the version where the setting was apparently the fantastical 1800s (check out governess!Gothel!), Rapunzel's design was more mature and romantic, and Flynn was a cuddly bear of a guy. (This probably explains the Empire-waisted gowns I saw earlier…)

I quite like the few sketches of Flynn as an archer; for people who have seen the film, was that dropped or is Flynn handy with a bow and arrow (although I've been told some of the guards have muskets?)? On a costuming note, I'm happy they raised Flynn's collar–it looks way too much like Gaston in that sketch where it's quite low.

Her parents' design are lovely–the King especially has a great character look, kind and sturdy. The Queen appears to have been gifted with an older design of her daughter.

Regarding that new featurette just posted, is it just me or does Mother Gothel with her evil smile resemble Valeria Galino? (Immortal Beloved, Frida, and numerous Italian films)

Yeah, thank you RodryCroft! Love seeing more bear!Flynn...as to Flynn being an archer in the final version, he isn't shown using a bow & arrow but I'm betting he could if he needed to. He's certainly handy enough with a frying pan!
I don't recall seeing any guards with guns....but it's possible I just don't remember it. I also don't remember seeing Flynn ever use a sword, but they're selling one with his face all over it at the Disney store, so who knows

And re: the Queen: it's noted that Rapunzel looks very much like her mother, so you're right :)

EDIT: After watching the newest featurette again, I DID see a guard on horseback with a gun! But I still don't remember them being used/fired at all during the movie.

If you're one of those people who are far too scared to read spoilers, don't read on
Jackoleen-Both Flynn and Rapunzel accomplish their dreams in the end, but RAPUNZEL is the one who has to sacrafice something to get it. Flynn tries to be the hero, but fails.

What? I thought he was VERY heroic--he really changes from a selfish to self-LESS person over the course of the film.

I agree, he starts only wanting money and then becomes concerned only with Rapunzel's comfort and safety.
Spoiler: He cuts of Rapunzel's hair to make sure that she's safe from Mother Gothel. If he was still selfish, he would let Rapunzel heal him.

The premiere was interesting. I watched the red carpet shenanigans from across the street, upstairs in the Hollywood and Highland complex. A great spot for doing such things, BTW, although a nice pair of binoculars would have made things much better.

It did indeed start at 5 PM. (8 PM Eastern time.) Before the "stars" started showing up, someone was passing out Rapunzel wigs and frying pans to the press people. Looked like pretty nice frying pans too. Fortunately no one attempted to use theirs as a weapon.

When it comes to mass media, I'm pretty laser-focused on theatrical animation, so it was no surprise that I didn't recognize anybody except the behind the scenes people (Lasseter, Menken, Keane, etc.), and Zach and Mandy. But I think it was mostly Disney Channel stars anyway, and I don't even have cable. I'm not sure if Donna Murphy was there or not, unless she dyed her hair platinum blond. (And who could blame her?)

On the outskirts, some enterprising street performers had taken the initiative to dress as Rapunzel, Flynn, Gothel and (a very tall) Pascal. Flynn and Gothel looked pretty good from a distance. Pascal was just plain sad, and Rapunzel, for some reason, appeared to be wearing a dress made entirely of her hair. They were quickly escorted far enough away from the event to avoid confusing people. The Disney-approved Rapunzel and Flynn held court down at the far end of the carpet, taking photos with the celebrities as they arrived.

For those of you listening on Radio Disney, you may be interested to know that I heard the "red carpet interview" with Mandy on the way home, WELL after the red carpet stuff was over and they had started striking the set. So the interviews were, at a minimum, being recorded prior to broadcast, and possibly were even faked.

Hollywood, by the way, is tourist hell (because of the locals, not the tourists). I would never dream of going there without a dang good reason. I'm not sure this qualified. But it was interesting to see.

LOL Well, if we are going to include Japanese anime than there are dozens and dozens of warrior princesses. I think as far as Disney goes, the closest we've seen is Princess Kida from Atlantis.
