I sort of like Mandy Moore's singing voice, although I'm not crazy about it, because it CAN become quite nasal and pinchy at times.
Then again, I am not super crazy about Gothel's voice during "Mother Knows Best"; I think that the reprise of that song is more exciting, with regards to Gothel's singing voice.
I must admit that I was afraid that Rapunzel would sound like Sissy Spacek, circa about 1980, only worse! The promo. pics of Rapunzel make her LOOK like Spacek, anyway...I just KNOW that when I'm watching the movie, there'll be SOME point at which I'll say, "OMG, Rapunzel is Carrie White, Flynn Rider is Tommy Ross, and Mother Gothel is Margaret White as a raven-haired woman! NOOO!" All of those images of the "chin in her hand" Rapunzel make Rapunzel look almost exactly like Spacek's Carrie!
Well, I HOPE that Rapunzel is individualistic enough that I don't start comparing "Tangled" to ANY other movies. I'm afraid, though, that some people are right when they say that the storyline, the types of included songs, and the song lyrics, sort of sound as though they've been heard many times before...
My other slight, and potential, issue with the movie deals with the fear that the character of Flynn Rider will be used so that young audiences will see that all men must become putty in the hands of all women...
SPOILER WARNINGS FOR "BEAUTY AND THE BEAST", "HERCULES", AND "THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG"...
I mean, far too many Disney heroes have sacrificed their dreams, the goals that they started out with, etc., all because some sexy little dame spritzed the pink perfume of femininity into their eyes! In some ways, it's NOT pleasant to think about the fact that The Beast can't really get much credit for his own salvation, or the fact that Hercules actually wants to be a powerless nobody so that he can love a liar and a conwoman, or that Prince Naveen is mothered into submission by Tiana!
I really, really, really don't want to see Flynn Rider give up on his own dreams just because he has to lead, father, and placate Rapunzel so that HER pretty, fluffy little pink dreams can triumph. If THAT happens (Ie: Flynn has to sacrifice for the relationship, while Rapunzel only takes, takes, takes...), I'm more than likely gonna feel as though I've downed 10 bottles of Pepto Bismol in one sitting.
I will also be angry if Rapunzel is the next Disney heroine who refuses to fight back when she's hit, or when she's thrown to the ground. I want to know that Disney heroines will fight back when they're attacked.
I am not saying that my ideas about the movie won't ever be more positive; I'm just saying that I smell a rehash, and a stereotypical rehash, at that.
If "Tangled" turns out to BE a tired, reheated serving of all of the old Disney stereotypes, I can always hope that the NEXT movie is more fresh and exciting!
I like the idea of Rapunzel, Flynn, and the frying pan/ self-defense weapon, though...
Thank you in advance for your replies.
