An IPOD is like a MP3 player, I think. Don't have one...I'm pretty old too - at 29
I don't even get carded at the liquor store anymore.

In which case,
MP3 (ĕm'pē-thrē')
n.
An MPEG standard used especially for digitally transmitting music over the Internet.
A file containing a song or other audio data that is encoded using this standard: The band released its latest single as an MP3 on the Internet.

I am not totally useless Luke.............I do know what an MP3 player is, I think. I have a Sony Discman that plays CD-R's and MP3 discs. I think what it is is technoligy has whizzed passed me and I have never caught up. Is an IPOD one of those stick things? I wouldn't know the first thing about them. I know how to burn CDR's and MP3's on my computer, but other than that, I am at a total loss.
I think this whole technological thing has passed me by, and I wasn't even looking.
Thanks for not laughing too hard at me.

The Apple iPod family (and a fake that was made for a mock ad by some fans). The normal iPods now have video and photo as well as just music.

Thanks for the pictures JiminyCrick..........do these play smaller discs, or how do you get the music recorded on them, much less video? I think I have seen some of these when I am at the gym, but since I listen to whatever is on the television at the time with headphones I don't know for sure.
What size discs do these IPods use, and can I make them on my computer? It seems like you could get more music on bigger discs, but maybe I am a realy lunkhead when it comes to this new technology.
What does shuffle mean, is that like on a CD where you can mix up the tracks in the order they play? That sounds like a cool feature. How many songs does the average IPod take to fill up. Does this take the place of a radio that you would wear on your arm when you are exercising?
Man, I have a lot of questions. How much are these things, and would I truly find one useful.

dvdjunkie,
iPods actually don't use discs at all. They are actually mini-hard drives with screens. To get the music or video onto them, you simply copy the computer file (whether it is an .mp3 song file or a .mpg video file, etc.) onto the iPod. It copies over in less than a second and then you can instantly choose whichever song you want from the menu screen. Depending on which iPod model you get, they can hold anywhere from 120 to 15,000 songs and can cost anywhere from $70 to $400.
All iPods have the "shuffle" feature that you are referring to. You can have the tracks play in random order. iPods allow you to create "playlists," where you pick and arrange the songs you want to play in a given sequence- kind of like making a mixed CD, but with no discs. You can then choose a particular playlist or album to play in random order or you can just have all the songs on your iPod play randomly.
The iPod Shuffle, which is the cheapest and smallest model, is called "The Shffle" because that is its only feature... you can't make playlists on that one and there isn't a screen for it, it just plays your songs in a different order every time.
You asked if this can take place of portable radios.... well, sort of. The big difference is that the iPod doesn't have an AM/FM tuner, so you can't listen to radio stations. That's where "podcasts" come in... they're sort of like radio shows except they are .mp3 files and work just like songs... you can play them on your computer, you can burn them to a CD, or you can put them on your iPod or any other .mp3 player. They do make wristbands, waist clips, etc. to hold your ipod while you exercise.
Hope this helps!

Man, I have a lot of questions. How much are these things, and would I truly find one useful.
1. The iPod plays MP3s only and can not play discs. What you need to do to put your stuff on your iPod is rip the disc to your PC (or Mac) and send the file into your iTunes folder (iTunes now comes with every new version of QuickTime). If you want new music tracks, or videos (Pixar shorts, Disney Shorts, TV Shows, Music Videos, High School Musical and lots more) they have the iTunes Music Store were you can buy all the tracks from the CD (most of the time for a few bucks off). The Music store has two ways to payment Gift Cards (what I use) and Credit Card. Podcasts have there own place one the Music Store page and are free.
2. The iPod takes no discs just MP3s.
3. Shuffle does mean you can mix up the tracks and all iPods have this. The iPod Shuffle is the most inexpensive of the ipods but there is no screen and therefore no photos, videos, or games and is on shuffle ALL of the time.
4. The iPod Shuffle can go up to 240 songs (if you choose the 1GB version). The iPod Nano (a smaller version of the norm which replaced the mini) has 240 songs (for the 1GB) 500 (for the 2 GB) and 1000 (for the 4GB). The newest of the normal iPods come in 30 and 60 GB versions. The 60 GB one can have up to 15,000 songs, 25,000 photos, or 150 hours of video.
5. It seems to have taken the place of radios and you can now get arm bands to attach to your iPod of any size or GB.
6. The 512MB shuffle starts at $69 and all the way up to the 60 GB iPod that goes for $399.00
For more try looking on the Apple iPod site http://www.apple.com/itunes/ .
Edit: Cruses! Foiled again.
Oh they but CAN play radio you only need a single accessory.AwallaceUNC wrote:You asked if this can take place of portable radios.... well, sort of. Another thing I was curious about. When you and pinkrenata (just wanna add, that was a great interview, pinkrenata, and it was cool to match a voice with a name and picture!) were talking about the end of the "Golden Age" or "Renaissance" or whatever you called it, you said you were initially "really disappointed" and "just mad" by Mulan and my mouth dropped
One last thing...what was that very quiet background music you played during the very last part of Renata's interview? It sounded like "The Mickey Mouse Club March" with an awesome country strings style. If so, where did you get this album and are there more tracks like that?
Wow, another reasons I'm glad I got a Creative Zen Micro mp3 player. I mainly got it instead of an ipod because it was cheaper and was compatible with Windows Media Player since I have a Dell Inspiron and I got used to the program. It also has playlists and stuff and the menu lets you browse through your music in so many different ways. But it also has AM/FM radio and a microphone so you can record something. I also like the design of the keypad better than the ipod. My only complaint is that I got mine right before the newer version came out that has a color screen, can hold pictures, more memory, and a blue shell thinger for the menu and keypad.AwallaceUNC wrote:You asked if this can take place of portable radios.... well, sort of. Thanks a lot, Kram. Maybe I'll dig up the Mulan thread to talk more about it there. JC91 is right about the song... great music.

I just found it about your Podcast, thanks to your new signature banner! I never listened to pod casts before (although my husband is a big fan of Twit) and got my husband to set me up so that it downloads now onto my Ipod! I have downloaded the archived shows to my Ipod - now it will be a trick to figure out if the Ipod will have a category for them or how that works.... anyway, just wanted to say I've only listened to one episode thus far: Part I with you and Pink Renata going over the golden age and dark age of Disney. My husband says you sound like an old pro doing these podcasts. I like the music in the background it is just loud enough to enjoy but does not drown out the dialog.AwallaceUNC wrote:the podcasting software captures all audio from all different applications at the same time, so I'm actually controlling the music via iTunes at the same time that I'm talking, and I have all these adjustment knobs to control how much of the audio from the various applications is being heard at a given time... that gets a little tricky when, as with the last show, there are over 50 audio files, especially because the sound clips from the movies aren't long enough to have proper fade ins/outs. I'll improve with all that over time..... -Aaron

I will, but thanks to you for performing this service! I think it will be a great way for me to learn more about Disney. Since I go to the gym anyway (but usually listen to music), now I can accomplish 2 things at the same time: working out at the gym AND learning about Disney! He's got them all loaded on my Ipod now. Its just a matter of figuring out how to find them on there and how to listen to them since I never tried putting a Podcast on there before.AwallaceUNC wrote:Tell your husband I said thanks, Pluto, and thanks a lot to you too!

You should keep your podcast banner in your siggy for awhile for newer UD members like me; that way they can find out about the Podcast when they see your posts in the forums.

Our vacation delayed me from hearing the Patriotic Episode 16 until now. I have to be honest, but the beginning was a little slow with the biography of Walt Disney. Maybe it's just me since I've read about him so much, but it definitely got better with some information I haven't read like about Disney and Communism and Disney's relationship with Ronald Reagan and that part about Nixon and WDW. All this time he was in Disney when he said it! Lol that's awesome!
Anyhow, I want to thank Aaron very much for reading the first part of my e-mail (actually the last part he read on the show) about Walt Disney and America. While he was reading it I was thinking..."what? I wrote this?" He read it so eloquently and the Patriot background music made it really stand out! This part and the parts following really made this episode terrific. I always reply (and with good reason) to Aaron with the good old "another great episode," but this one really does take the cake. It may be July 21 when I listened to it, but it felt like it was Independence Day all over again. With this special episode, Aaron really made the magic of Walt Disney shine red, white and blue. Terrific job and your show closing was just perfect.
On to Episode 17!
