Disney DVDs - buying experiences at eBay

What is the problem with bootlegs (I'm not defending them, I'm legitimately curious). I know it's illegal, but if you get one by mistake, and it's a really good convincing bootleg, does it matter? Are there quality issues, are they missing anything? Or is it just the notion of not having the real thing?

I don't really mind that its a fake. Just as long as it has everything the same and plays the movie good. Which it does. But I have an issue with it not being the real thing

But since it is comming out soon it is fine. But still does anyone have pictures of the real thing?

Hey Grunchies, another good way to check if its a fake is the center ring that holds the disc in place. If it is different than your officials than you will know for sure. Thanks again to everyone for their support.

In a practical manner, bootlegs will never be as high a quality as the legits, they have no resale value (since it is illegal to resell them, and you don't mess with The Mouse), they'll likely have no extras, including the typical french/spanish subtitles or dubbing, if these are important to you. And you have absolutely no assurance of the quality of the disc itself: it could degrade in a couple of years. If you get a defective bootleg, you are likely our of luck, whereas Disney backs up their quality and you'll get a free replacement. Bootleggers are a sneaky bunch and will disappear if you try to make inquiries. Legit retailers are usually more dependable.

Plus, of course, all the legal stuff.

I can say that I've had an OK experience with Ebay.

I recently bought a 'sealed' Lady and the Tramp and when I got it, it was an official Disney release, but it's not 'factory sealed'. Looks like the seller's got his own sealer and did it himself (no security strip and no Disney stamp on the plastic)

But I did manage to get a pretty good deal the other day. Picked up a open Hercules DVD for $9.99 and it ended up being the Limited Edition rather than the Gold!!

Check the seller's feedback profile very carefully. I've always done that and never had a problem.

I have done that but people give them positive feedback for fakes. I guess they just can't tell the difference.

But if you read the feedback you easily get a clue about if they know and don't care like many do.

The main thing is that if the seller has 1 negative feedback for selling a bootleg, then probably all is bootlegs.

Then if he sells a lot of the limited editions, and his history shows that he has been selling them over a large periode of time, then he is 99% surely a bootleger.

Well my Toy Story DVD has all the menus & features, etc. of the originals. The picture and audio is great and all, so the disc may be legit. The jacket of the DVD is definitely a photo copy or something though, b/c the bar code and proofs of purchase look like they were printed twice over each other. The seller had great feedback on eBay, though.

I just found on E-Bay what the sailer pretends to be "The Little Mermaid Platinum Edtion". It's obsiouly a bootleg, but when you look at the picsutre (above) it's sims so real ! You could see Disney and "technical" logos !
This is insane !

Listen the bootleg people have learned how to make them authentic! They are making bootlegs of the limited edition DVD'S by the thousands! and they look identical to the real ones and play the same way to

I really doubt that boot-legers have learned how to make them authentic, a fake is a fake, it can never be authentic, doesn't matter how realistic they look.

Haha, keep dreaming. They won't use THAT cover art. That's the poster that was released in the same period as the movie and they will really use newly created material that looks sharp and colorful. I don't like that cover, it looks too old. But from what I see they did a nice job matching it with the real editions.

I bought some very impressive bootlegs of the Limited Issue DVDs on eBay. I didn't know they were bootlegs when I bought them... it wasn't until I put them in my computer and checked the region coding that I figured it out (they were not region encoded, even though the cover (and the eBay seller) claimed they were all region 1.
