It's not really surprising that Kubo won considering it's the first animated film since The Nightmare Before Christmas to get an Oscar nomination for best visual effects. But I think this year will be the exception and Zootopia will win the Oscar.

Yes, but only two of these films were from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Yet, surprisingly, Moana won the Annie Award for Best Animated Effects over Kubo. I'm not sure how many Annie voters are also members of the Academy's visual effects branch, though.

Kubo is clearly looking to pull a BH6 in 2 weeks at the Oscars. But that year Dragons 2/Lego movie were spitting all major awards. Then when Lego was snubbed for Best Animated Feature, everyone thought that Dragons 2 would win hands down.
So who knows what awaits. Though if Kubo does upset Zoo, I hope Moana can upset Lala Land for Best Song. Vote splitting
Kubo has won the BAFTA award for Best Animated Feature! What a huge collapse by Zootopia. Kubo is winning the Oscar in 2 weeks. Every single feature that has won a BAFTA has won the Oscar, with the exception being The Lego Movie, which wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. And like I predicted, when Kubo won the VES award, it was over for Zootopia. Wow, Zootopia just pulled an Atlanta Falcons

Didn't expect this at all. This is quite an upset. Every BAFTA winner in the category went on to win the Oscar (except for The Lego Movie which wasn't nominated).

Having Zootopia/Moana & Dory all competing for the same award, spitting votes, Kubo came in and snatch up the win.

Kubo has all the momentum now. As far as I'm concerned, Zoo already lost the Oscar. Back to back wins for Kubo at the VES & BAFTAs. I'm know hoping that Moana can pull a Kubo for Best Song, but that's not realistic. But with Kubo's win all the talk of the academy doesn't care about Animation & only votes for Pixar/Disney should end. Well, at least until Pixar's Coco wins next year
The Children's BAFTA awards are voted by the public, right? So in the UK people really liked Zootopia, while in the US they seemed to prefer Finding Dory, which won 3 People's Choice awards.
I'm not really sure if this means that Kubo is the for-sure winner yet. Previous award seasons would lead to yes, but the Oscars can still be unpredictable. Spotlight was treading The Big Short and Revenant for the biggest Oscar predictors, but still came out on top, for instance. Zootopia still could get it, since Academy members usually just go for whatever their kid's favorite film was that year (as to why Finding Dory didn't get nominated- if I recall right, Academy members who are in the animation industry are the ones who vote for potential nominations, and it's not hard to see Dory not considered up to snuff between the others).
But frankly, I like Zootopia and Kubo about equally as much, so I'd be fine with either winning. I lowkey kind of want to see the latter win, though, since Laika have been knocking it out of the park for years and deserve their due.

Yeah, this clearly is Laika's best shot at an Oscar. But if Zoo & Moana come up empty handed on Oscar night, that would be very disappointing for WDAS. Also, they would be 2-10 when nominated for Best Animated Feature:
Losses- Lilo & Stitch/Treasure Planet/Brother Bear/Bolt/The Princess & the Frog/Wreck-It Ralph/Zootopia & Moana.
Wins- Frozen & BH6.
Well, rooting for Kubo though I am, I'd be much happier to see either Zootopia or Moana win than I was for BH6. Ugh. They almost deserve to lose just to balance out that undeserved win.

Well for me, the win for BH6 makes up for Brave beating Wreck-It Ralph. That was just wrong & no one would of cared if Brave had lost. Also Toy Story 3 beating Tangled for Best Song? Unacceptable by the Academy. Those 2 feature were just flat out robbed.
