I think it was this image that prompted a lot of the early debate on her design being "ugly:"

^I might actually agree with the ugliness factor there. But later on, we finally got a look at her final design:

In my opinion, her she ended up being very appealing, just not conventionally "pretty." Which I'm totally cool with. Not every female lead has to have the same stereotypical exaggerated features we so often see in the animated world. I also don't think anyone has to be conventionally pretty in order to be considered beautiful, be it a fictional character or a real-life person. Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder anyway, as SWillie has already stated.
Maybe some are trying to see her as pretty as they can make her, but you're obviously trying to see her as ugly as you can make her. You prefer your ideal concept of the "Disney essence" and seem to have a grudge against anyone praising something that exists outside that bubble, especially Pixar. Which is fine, it's your opinion after all. But I don't think it entitles you to claim that anyone who doesn't agree with you is being dishonest.

Duster, you're absolutely right about people seeing what they want to see, but you know what? That applies to you too.Disney Duster wrote:If people don't think she's ugly, I am surprised. I feel you're you're not being honest, that you're all trying to see her as pretty as you can make her.

And I feel you have a lot of nerve and are being disrespectful to accuse people of being dishonest simply because they don't share your opinion.Disney Duster wrote:If people don't think she's ugly, I am surprised. I agree with this completely.enigmawing wrote:Duster, you're absolutely right about people seeing what they want to see, but you know what? That applies to you too. I think the character looks great, perhaps not conventionally beautiful as with the Disney princesses, but beautiful nonetheless. If she had been designed to look like a typical Disney princess, I'm sure there would be people accusing Pixar of ripping off Disney's style of animation so I really like that they've gone down a different route with Merida.
We're not going to Guam, are we?
I agree with all of this, but what about Merida, besides her frizzy hair makes her "unconventionally" pretty?enigmawing wrote:In my opinion, her she ended up being very appealing, just not conventionally "pretty." I myself wouldn't mind seeing women of this shape as a princess character.

The funny thing about Disney Duster is that I've spoken to an Asperger's patient at another forum who behaves a lot like him. At least with Duster, from what little I know of him, he doesn't use any personal condition as a reason to annoy everyone.Duster, you're absolutely right about people seeing what they want to see, but you know what? I think more than anything else, her wide face is throwing some people for a loop.Semaj wrote:I agree with all of this, but what about Merida, besides her frizzy hair makes her "unconventionally" pretty?
Interesting to see someone liking an apple shape. I'm an apple and I hate being one.Semaj wrote:I myself wouldn't mind seeing women of this shape as a princess character.

And for the record, I have no issues with Duster and consider him a friend.

Maybe I could say she's appealing.
I know beauty's in the eye of the beholder but that anyone thinks she's pretty or not ugly and it's not just your own personal preferences (like people who have an affinity for round pasty faces and red hair) baffles me, so chill out and don't be all like "oh the nerve you have" I just made a statement I thought some of you might be trying to tell yourself she's pretty I didn't force you to admit or agree with that geeze.
And she doesn't have to look like a Disney Princess to be pretty, I've thought plenty of non-Disney characters looked pretty enigmawing.
So as my friend I have to say your wrong about me and my Disney essence bubble there.
Semaj why don't you pm me about how that guy actually acts if its so similar, and I wonder why you talk to him so much but not me the same way.

I've seen how some celebs, particularly a certain Dreamgirl changed themselves to look "prettier". They just looked better when they were thick.enigmawing wrote:I think more than anything else, her wide face is throwing some people for a loop.Semaj wrote:I agree with all of this, but what about Merida, besides her frizzy hair makes her "unconventionally" pretty?

There's also people in my real life, including my girlfriend who aren't of the standard hourglass shape, but are cute and pretty nonetheless. There's more to the story of true feminine beauty than what movies dare to show us.
You should be proud.

I don't agree with his "Disney essence" arguments as much as he does, but like I said, he's not as bothersome as others I've met.And for the record, I have no issues with Duster and consider him a friend.I just don't agree with some of the things he says.

I see no problem with Merida. She's cute, but she's got spunk, dignity, courage, sometimes arrogance when it comes to mother and daughter relationship, and above all, bravery. Of course, if she has eyes of Rapunzel's eyes (shrink a little to make it Ariel's size from Disney's, "The Little Mermaid"), then she would be even cuter, maybe even more cuter than Rapunzel and Ariel put together. No offense, but her eyes she has now, she looks like she's giving puppy dog eyes, to show how desperate she wants to be independent. But for the record, she's cute. I bet she can kill 2 birds with 1 arrow (it was supposed to be 1 stone, but since this is Disney and Pixar's, "Brave," I thought I'd add a twist of the term).

It’s hard to believe the huge eyes have gotten so bad that people are wishing to go back to Ariel-sized eyes now.
I do think she’s better looking than Rapunzel or Merida, but that’s just me.

I know this is off-topic, but I'm not sure why so many people have a problem with Jennifer Hudson. It's not her fault she could lose weight and her fans couldn't. It's not like she had plastic surgery.Semaj wrote: I've seen how some celebs, particularly a certain Dreamgirl changed themselves to look "prettier". They just looked better when they were thick.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ ~ "The Fate of Ophelia"
Taylor Swift ~ "Eldest Daughter"
Taylor Swift ~ "CANCELLED!"

It's not about the self-esteem of her fans. The fact that she was already building a successful career based on her acting and singing talents makes her current job as a Weight Watchers spokeswoman unnecessary.

I found this on YouTube. I wish I could send more, but that would be too much, unless you don't mind. I couldn't tell if anyone has already posted some music. Samples is one thing, but how about the full scores?

Not if it personally was important to her to lose weight. I know she was an inspiration to me when I used Weight Watchers to lose about 60 lbs over the past year (and I'm not even a woman!) I frequently find myself functioning as WW spokesman when people say, "You look great! How did you do it?" If WW wants to pay her to do that because she's famous and so they can use her likeness, why not? Who doesn't want more money?Semaj wrote:

(OK . . . now that I've contributed further to this thread de-rail, carry on!)
