Federico Fellini:
La Dolce Vita (1960)- 7.5
It's too long. Yes, it's a classic; it has wonderful performances by Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni, and it´s very atmospheric and beautifully shot... but it's still way too long. Feels like an eternity to finish watching.
Ingmar Bergman:
Det sjunde inseglet (The Seventh Seal) (1957)-6
Okay, I confess: I never got it. But, I don't think that was Berman's intention. So, in that regard, he made a good film.
François Truffaut:
Jules et Jim (1962)- 6
I had wanted to give this a much higher rating, since it's so highly praised, but I couldn't help it... I kept dozing off. What a boring movie is this. Oh, and the melodrama is so bad.
Jean-Luc Godard:
A bout de souffle (Breathless) (1960)- 7.5
The gimmick of the characters talking to the audience was invented in this movie. Though it was ground-breaking for its time, it didn't make for a better film and got irritating pretty quickly.
Luis Buñuel:
Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog) (1929)- 8.5
Very, very, VERY disturbing, albeit short, piece of art. It has absolutely no story at all, but is a continuation of associations and surreal imagery. Don't expect or even try to 'get' it. There's nothing to 'get'; there just 'is'.
Otto Preminger:
Advise & Consent (1962)-7
Very 'meh'. Story about corruption and foul political games in Congress is not very engaging, drags at times and has an inexplicable unlogical ending. Not even mentioning the gross over-acting of Charles Laughton.
Anatomy of a Murder (1959)- 8.5
One of the best I've ever seen, due to Stewart's convincing performance, fitting soundtrack and tense atmosphere. The only thing I didn't like, was how lightly the rape-story and the impact it has on women was treated, but as I understand it, it was controversial enough for that time.
Carmen Jones (1954)- 7.5
Fine performances by Harry Belafonte and the beautiful Dorothy Dandrige, but two things I hate: the absense of any white people makes it very unrealistic/unbelievable; and I hate how Belafonte and Dandrige's singing parts were dubbed by white singers to 'tone them down'.

Who is Carter? If you're referring to the character of Isabelle, the actress' name is Eva Green.
Btw, sorry for the long last post. Those are the only movies I could actually comment on. I haven't seen many others--I'm not a film major/expert, so I'm very limited.

Listening to most often lately:
Taylor Swift ~ "Elizabeth Taylor"
Katy Perry ~ "bandaid"
Meghan Trainor ~ "Still Don't Care"

Rob Reiner:
North (1994)- does the Nostalgia Critic's review count? Because if it doesn't, then I have no interest in this one.
The Princess Bride (1987)- 8.5 Tons of great lines.
Ivan Reitman:
Junior (1994)- Another Nostalgia Critic review, another film I have no interest in actually seeing.
Ghostbusters II (1989)- 7 Not as good as the first one, but it has some good. The acting is still great and there are some great bits, but when you get down to it, this is pretty much a retread of the first.
Ghostbusters (1984)- 9.5 Even more quotable than Princess Bride, and arguably much more entertaining
Stripes (1981)- 7.5 Pretty entertaining, if a little average considering when it was made.
Frank Oz:
The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984)
The Dark Crystal (1982)
Loved both of those as a kid, but I haven't seen either one in years. I was extremely disappointed when the planned Dark Crystal sequel that was supposed to be directed by Dexter's Lab[/] creator Genndy Tartakovsky never got too far into production. I really wanted to see that.
Barry Sonnenfeld:
Wild Wild West (1999)
Men in Black (1997)
Addams Family Values (1993)
The Addams Family (1991)
More movies I've seen as a kid but haven't viewed in years. I hated Wild Wild West (but love it now thanks to Kevin Smith's story about Jon Peters), but liked the rest.
Amy Heckerling:
Clueless (1995)- 7 Not too bad. More for my sister, but there's some funny stuff in this, and Alicia Silverstone is hot.

A Few Good Men (1992)- 7.5
"You can't handle the truth!" must be one of the best-remembered movie quotes of all time. Great Nicholson, decent Cruise, average fare.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989)- 7.5
One of the better rom-coms in its genre.
Stand by Me (1986)- 8.5
Great nostalgic piece. I thought it had a 'Wonder Years'-kind of feeling to it.
-
Harold Ramis:
Multiplicity (1996)-
It's been too long for me to comment. I liked it when I saw it, but that must be more than 10 years ago.
Groundhog Day (1993)- 8
One of my favorite comedy's, this one never fails to entertain. I've seen it at least six times. I like Murray better when he's still the cynical character, but that shouldn't surprise anyone. But I still like the change in character. I can rarely stomach such sweetness, but here, it works.
Frank Oz:
The Score (2001)- 8
Robert De Niro and Edward Norton are excellent, Brando didn't impress me much, but by that time, he was only a shadow of his former self. Exciting heist movie.
Amy Heckerling:
Look Who's Talking Too (1990)
Look Who's Talking (1989)
I liked them as a kid, but... what do kids know?

Rob Reiner:
North (1994) -
I saw it when I was younger and liked it. I watched about 10 minutes of it recently and couldn't take much more.
A Few Good Men (1992) - 7
Fairly average courtroom drama, about the arrogant yuppie who stumbles across something big.
Misery (1990) - 7
One of the better Steven King adaptions.
When Harry Met Sally... (1989) - 6.5
Not bad but I don't see the attraction.
The Princess Bride (1987) - 6
I might've liked this if I was 3 years old but the DCOM quality just turned me off.
Stand by Me (1986) - 8
I really love this movie. Hands down Reiner's best.
This is Spinal Tap (1984) - 7
Kind of stupid but being a big fan of 80s rock, I couldn't help but enjoy it.
Ivan Reitman (I love his son's films):
My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006) -
I watched a few minutes of this and turned it off.
Evolution (2001) - 4.5
The effects are decent...that's all the positive I can think of.
Six Days Seven Nights (1998) - 6
It was OK but not the most endearing drama.
Dave (1993) - 7
President for a day, see what it's like. I like the score too.
Kindergarten Cop (1990) - 6.5
Decent enough Arnie comedy.
Ghostbusters II (1989) - 6.5
Not as good as the original but still entertaining.
Twins (1988) - 6
Not as bad as people let on.
Ghostbusters (1984) - 7.5
Not a very good movie but I have deep nostalgic feelings for it. I also have the soundtrack on my iPod.
Stripes (1981) - 6.5
Not bad, my Dad loves it. Bernstien's score is fantastic.
Meatballs (1979) -
It's been a while but I don't remember really caring for it.
Harold Ramis:
Year One (2009) - 4
Terrible. Absolutely terrible.
Bedazzled (2000) - 6.5
Underrated, way better then the original. My main beef is Elizabeth Hurley being fully clothed the whole time.
Analyze This (1999) - 7
I thought it was funny enough but it's been a while.
Groundhog Day (1993) - 7.5
Like My Cousin Vinny, it's an early 90s comedy gem that more people need to know about.
Vacation (1983) - 7
At times, this is REALLY funny but it does drag in a few places.
Caddyshack (1980) - 6.5
A little overrated but it has it's moments.
Frank Oz:
The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) -
I saw it in school years ago, I thought it was alright.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) -
Once agin, it's been years but I thought it was alright.
Little Shop of Horrors (1986) - 6.5
This was pretty enjoyable, music wasn't bad either.
The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984) - 6
It was alright but the show is better.
The Dark Crystal (1982) - 6
It kind of creeped me out as a kid but I still found it enjoyable.
Barry Sonnenfeld:
RV (2006) -
A few minutes and turned it off. Robin Williams, you need to retire.
Men in Black II (2002) - 5.5
I saw this in theaters, it not only wasn't as good as the original but it also wasn't as good as the animated series.
Wild Wild West (1999) - 5
I liked it when I originally saw it but upon recent viewing I can't imagine how (well, substance abuse is my best guess).
Men in Black (1997) - 7.5
Underrated. I enjoyed this as a kid and upon the recent revisit. Hell, I even enjoy Will Smith's music video, so there.
Get Shorty (1995) - 6
I like the idea of a hitman who is a movie fan but that's it. Not a very good movie.
Addams Family Values (1993) - 6
Not as good as the television show, misses the mark.
The Addams Family (1991) - 6
Not as good as the television show, misses the mark.
Amy Heckerling:
A Night at the Roxbury (1998) -
I saw part o this. It's like a bad SNL sketch.
Clueless (1995) -
It's been a while but I thought it was alright.
Look Who's Talking (1989) -
I saw this as a kid, I remember liking it but who knows.
European Vacation (1985) - 5
It's poop, worst of the Vacation movies.
Johnny Dangerously (1984) -
I saw part of this...interesting.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) - 6.5
It has it's moments but not one of the greatest 80s comedies. The female nudity is appreciated though.

Curtis Hanson:
8 Mile (2002)- I saw this when it came out, but the only things I remember is the scene when one of Slim's friends ends up blowing his rib cage up when pulling a gun out of his pants, and "Lose Yourself", which is a brilliant song.
L.A. Confidential (1997)- 8.5 Pretty good neo noir film. Kim Basinger deserved her Oscar.
Ang Lee:
Hulk (2003)- 4.5 This isn't a Hulk movie. It's a half-assed attempt at a Hulk-inspired art house monster movie character study. It gets bonus points for the scene where Hulk smashes the tanks, because that was a very effective action sequence, but even that took place too late in the film to really have an affect on me.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)- On my Netflix queue
Wow, what a paltry selection from me. Seen so few films here.

Thanks, I enjoy this thread!
Sidney Pollack:
The Interpreter (2005)- 7
Disappointing. I was expecting a clever, intelligent political thriller. Instead, I got a fairly predictable production full of clichés. But, at least they were executed well and with Sean Penn, you can hardly go wrong.
Out of Africa (1985)- 6
Meh. Just not my cup of tea. It tried way too hard to be a grand, epic Oscar-worthy drama, but instead became incredibly over-done.
Three Days of the Condor (1975)- 6
Political thriller with Robert Redford that was a lot less exciting than I had anticipated.
Barry Levinson:
Wag the Dog (1997)- 8.5
Very clever and funny political satire. It parodies the way modern-day spindoctors and 'image builders' create utterly false depictions of politicians and their policies to mislead the public. The scary part is that the over-the-top approach in this piece of fiction seems to have become reality. I love the bickering between Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman.
Rain Man (1988)- 7.5
Tom Cruise is not too impressive, but (as always) Dustin Hoffman steals the show and makes the film worthwhile, although I think it was too sentimental at times.
Anthony Minghella:
Cold Mountain (2003)- 4
I can't believe I wasted more than an hour on this before finally turning it off. What a snooze-fest this is. How this became to be such an acclaimed movie, I'll never know. One of the most boring things I've ever seen.
Curtis Hanson:
Wonder Boys (2000)- 7.5
Nice little independent film. It's quirky with a very unique kind of humor. I appreciate it more with every viewing, but it takes some getting used to. Of course, Michael Douglas was great, as always and I also enjoyed Katie Holmes (for obvious reasons). Bonus points for adding a lot of Dylan-songs, including one that he wrote especially for this movie, which was rewarded an Academy Award. Do you know the videoclip that goes with it, Lazario? It shows Dylan taking the place of the Douglas-character, making it seem like he's the one talking to Tobey McGuire and dancing with Katie.

L.A. Confidential (1997)- 9
Excellent modern-day film noir. It has all the ingredients to make it a modern classic, most notably fantastic actors playing memorable characters, who are not at all the black-and-white personas you would find in most noirs. Bonus points for the rich sets and perfect cinematography.
John Schlesinger:
Midnight Cowboy (1969)- 7.5
Starts out great, but begins to drag after an hour or so. Made memorable by Dustin Hoffman.
Ang Lee:
Lust, Caution (2007)-
Still lying around here, waiting to be seen.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)- 8.5
Wonderful drama; tragic story, but translated into film very well. It would've been awfully easy to overdo this kind of project, making it too sentimental or too over-the-top, but Ang never goes there and keeps it real and authentic.

Out of Africa (1985) -
It’s been a while since I first viewed this. I remember it being long and unengaging.
Tootsie (1982) - 7.5
Great movie. Dustin Hoffman is funny, although, I surprisingly didn’t care for the Bill Murray cameo. Between this and Some Like it Hot, cross dressing almost sounds like a good premise for a movie (although, it requires great actors like Dustin Hoffman and Jack Lemmon to pull it off).
Three Days of the Condor (1975) - 6
I was bored throughout.
Barry Levinson:
Man of the Year (2006) - 5.5
Great premise most likely inspired by Stephen Colbert, but it’s a boring movie.
Envy (2004) - 5
Felt very formulaic and unfunny. I’m sure it was made for a younger demographic.
Disclosure (1994) - 6
Not as bad as it’s reputation but doesn’t do anything well.
Bugsy (1991) - 6.5
It tried to be a great gangster movie but ultimately lets you down (which really sucks as I love these kinds of period pieces, especially when they take place in classic Hollywood). It really looses steam towards the end and I’m not sure why it was nominated for best picture.
Rain Man (1988) - 8
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie. Say what you want about it’s portrayal of autism but I was too wrapped up in the relationship between these brothers to worry about that.
Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) - 6.5
Not one of the greatest Vietnam pictures, with Robin Williams just being himself, but it was still enjoyable.
The Natural (1984) - 6
Besides Randy Newman’s score, there is nothing distinctive or stand out about this baseball movie. Just as with Field of Dreams, I’ll never understand the appeal.
Anthony Minghella:
Cold Mountain (2003) - 6.5
Presented in an episodic format, it does loose it’s way a here and there, killing the pacing. It’s not a bad Civil War romance, but a little too depressing for it’s own good. It’s no Gone With the Wind, which I’m sure the producers were hoping it would be.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) - 5.5
I hated the characters, the story and the movie. I don’t think I’ll be re-watching this anytime soon.
The English Patient (1996) -
I haven’t seen it but I heard it’s garbage that never should have won best picture over Fargo. I’ll have to see it sometime to make up my own mind but it’s not at the top of my list.
Curtis Hanson:
L.A. Confidential (1997) - 8
As someone who actually likes Titanic, I can tell you that it never should’ve won best picture over this movie. Never.
John Schlesinger:
Marathon Man (1976) - 6.5
It was alright, but kind of disappointing considering the talent involved (Dustin Hoffman and Lawrence Olivier). All I really remember, like most people, is the dentist scene (which is rather tame).
Midnight Cowboy (1969) - 6.5
A movie famous for being famous? It may’ve broke new ground back in the day but there is nothing really stand out here besides the two leads performances (mainly Hoffman as Ratso Rizzo).
Ang Lee:
Brokeback Mountain (2005) - 6
It was alright but the characters pissed me off. Nice cinematography though.
Hulk (2003) - 5.5
Great casting, sets, art direction, Hulk design, visual effects, settings, Danny Elfman score, etc. Visually, it looked like a proper Hulk movie. It’s the story and direction that sucks. It’s tries to be artsy-fartsy and fails. The decision to edit the film like a comic book was a poor one but not as bad as the one made to have Hulk fight a giant CGI poodle. One wonders if simply having a different director attached would’ve made this a good movie?
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) -
I saw part of this when it first came out but fell asleep. I honestly can’t take any movie with crappy wire stunts seriously.

I don't think they're crappy. The actors move beautifully and elegantly. Also, I like the fact that the visual effects are more of an organic sort. I didn't really notice any CGI effects. Were there any?jpanimation wrote:Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) -

EDIT: Taking a look at this thread (and realising that I've seen almost none of the listed films) makes me realise what a long way I've got to go into exploring world cinema.
Unfortunately, in my obsession of animation and constant reading-up on the subject, I've neglected the rest of the world of film.

King Kong: 7 - A pretty decent sequel, but unnecessarily long.
Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: 9 - A great finale to a great trilogy
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: 8.5 - Weakest of the trilogy, but still highly enjoyable.
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings: 9.5 - Great introduction to one of the best trilogy.
Dead Alive: 6.5 - great gore effects, but do not remember the story right now.
Danny Boyle
Slumdog Miilonaire: 8 - one of the few Best Picture winners I actually enjoyed.
Robert Rodriguez
Machete: 7 - Pretty good if you like over-the-top violence

Danny Boyle:
Slumdog Millionaire (2008)- 7 A fairly good film, if forgettable. I didn't mind it winning Best Picture, but I haven't thought about it in years.
Guillermo Del Toro:
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)- 6.5 Same thing with the first. I just haven't been able to fully enjoy Del Toro's take on the character for some reason, and I can't think of why.
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)- 10 This one works for me, though. A very emotionally exhausting film.
Hellboy (2004)- 6.5 Eh, something's missing here as opposed to the comics. I don't really know what. It' a fun sci-fi/horror flick, Ron Pearlman is great as Hellboy, the effects are great, but this just never sat well with me compared to the original comics. I just can't put my finger on what, though.
Robert Rodriguez:
Machete (2010)- 8.5 Better than any of the Grindhouse pictures. Danny Trejo is the man.
Grindhouse / Planet Terror (2007)- 8 The better of the Grindhouse pictures. The funny thing? My favorite part throughout the entire film is Tarantino's character.
"You gave me some wood, now I'm going to fucking give you some wood!"
Sin City (2005)- 6 I love the cinematography here. Black and white with occasional sprinkles of color, it works very well. I also think the film is chock full of good performances. And even though she isn't much of an actress, Jessica Alba was smoking hot in her role.
The stories themselves though is another thing. I'm not a fan of this point in Frank Miller's career, and only the first/last one leaves much of an impression on me. If anything, I'll say that this was a much better constructed film than Miller's The Spirit, but that's not saying much at all.
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over (2003)- I saw these movies when I was younger, but don't really remember how I felt about them one way or the other. I don't have the interest to watch them again soon, though.
Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (2002)
Spy Kids (2001)
Gus Van Sant:
Milk (2008)- 8 Enjoyable. Sean Penn deserved his Oscar.
Psycho (1998)- Wait, Vince Vaughn plays Norman Bates? lol
Darren Aronofsky:
Black Swan (2010)- 7 This one left me a little conflicted, but it has Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis getting it on, so I can't fault it too much
The Wrestler (2008)- 8 Another enjoyable film with another Oscar-worthy performance from 08. If I can fault it for anything, it's that the story isn't really that original, but Mickey Rourke does it so well that I can't really fault it that much.
Baz Luhrmann:
Romeo + Juliet (1996)- 4.5 Goddamn, this was a stupid, stupid movie. Watch the 1960's film version of the classic story. Especially if, well, you know.

Peter Jackson:
Heavenly Creatures (1994)- 3
Bored me to tears. I kept hoping something interesting would happen, but it was a total waste of time.
Danny Boyle:
Trainspotting (1996)-
I turned this off after half an hour because I was too grossed out.
Guillermo Del Toro:
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)- 7.5
Totally unique film, which mixes fantasy with war drama. I just felt cheated a bit, because it was promoted as a pure fantasy film, but only very little screentime was dedicated to this part of the plot.
Robert Rodriguez:
Sin City (2005)- 9
Ultra-violent, but beautifully made comicbook-adaptation. It has lush visuals, amazing characters, great cinematography, bizarre storylines, most memorable action scenes and, as Avaitor pointed out, a gorgeous Jessica Alba.
Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)- 5.5
What a mess of a movie. What was going on here? There are just way too many storylines to keep track of. And what a sham to promise us Salma Hayek, but only use her for five minutes during a flash-back!
From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)- 5.5
I don't see the appeal of this movie. The first half is decent and entertaining enough, with Harvey Keitel and Tarantino as kidnappers. Then we get a fantastic scene with Salma Hayek as a sexy stripper... then she turns into the vampire and the film falls apart.
Desperado (1995)- 7.5
Now this was an entertaining action flick. Again, with Salma Hayek.
Gus Van Sant:
Good Will Hunting (1997)- 7
Just an okay movie. I think it's overly praised. It was fairly conventional melodrama, not too special, but not bad either.
Darren Aronofsky:
Black Swan (2010)- 9.5
What an intense film! I got so wrapped up in it. I literally sighed in relief when it was over and I had to sit down for a few minutes to let it all sink in. Portman definitly deserved that Oscar.
Requiem for a Dream (2000)- 8.5
This drama makes visible the effects of drug-abuse in a literal way: the director uses every tool to suck the audience into the minds of his characters, to let us see the world through their eyes.
Baz Luhrmann:
Moulin Rouge! (2001)- 7.5
I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I mostly liked it for the great sets/costumes/cinematography.

Yeah, it is, but Miller directed his own adaptation of the comic strip a couple of years ago.Goliath wrote:'The Spirit', as far as I know, is a creation of Will Eisner. But I agree about Jessica Alba: smoke seemed to come from the screen!Avaitor wrote:Sin City (2005)- [...] And even though she isn't much of an actress, Jessica Alba was smoking hot in her role.

An ass-shot of Eve Mendes aside, it's not worth watching.
