As a minority, this is a big deal for many of us. Mind you, in all the elections, I never voted for color, but the fact a person of color has made it, made it because the American people wanted him there, its a big deal. Not to everyone. But it is to many. To those people who's grandparents told them how they couldn't get a job because of their color. How my own mother called up a hotel to make a reservation and when she gave her last name, Rodriguez, suddenly, they had no rooms! That was only 10 years ago when that happened! I was on the fence, more leaning towards McCain, till Palin came. So I didn't vote for Obama because of his color. Because I wanted to see a black man make it. I predicted he wouldn't win. I predicted he'd get the popular and lost the electoral. I figured it would be VERY close. I was shocked when I saw him winning by a landslide.

To see him walk on that stage, as the President-Elect and make that speech, I cried. I cried because of the stories my great-grandparents and my grandparents use to tell me on all the difficulties they faced. And knowing, none of them lived to see this. To see what they said was impossible. It wouldn't happen till probably another generation. They told me I might be their age when it happens. By then, the generations ahead of them would come to their senses. Vote for the person, not against the color. And they were wrong, and no here to be proud of how wrong they were. My nana passed away last year, right before my daughter's birthday in October. I wish she lived to see this.

It should be a big deal. Its something to be proud of.

And both sides are making a big deal of his race. For different reasons. A republican was quoted as saying, "They voted in a Black Panther"...another called him a Muslim terrorist. And Ralph Nader called him "Uncle Tom".

Whether you like it or not, his race IS an issue.

Cheer up! After all, lots of non-Americans are predicting that Joe Biden will be the 45th President before Christmas 2009...

Being frank, I can only thing one one thing that could mean...Obama being assassinated. They did catch two skin heads were were planning a slaughter of blacks, working their way to Obama. Its there. But I am confident he will have the protection he needs. Eventually the racists either need to get over it or just get the hell out of the country.

As a point of clarification, I ought to add that I'm quite chuffed that Barack Obama got up today; and that I and lots of other people are quietly hopeful that this will be a turning point for the better in America's relationship with the rest of the world.

I will also add that in my experience the vast majority of Americans I've had dealings with are sane, sensible, really nice people - in fact I think Americans probably have the capacity to be the nicest, most genuine people in the world.

On the other hand, the Union does contain a small number of really scary nutters; absolute iron-clad loonies - with, of course, a constitutional right to bear arms. It only takes a small number of fruitcakes to see today's turn of events as the apex of liberalism gone mad and to feel that they'd better do something about it. I do hope they don't. But I've just got this nasty feeling in the pit of my stomach.

Finally, you calling my writing skills poor, only speaks to the small person that you obviously are.
Shakespeare once said "what's in a name?"

just... you know.... think about that, considering his writing skills were better you anyway.

Patrick I find that rude and uncalled for, MM1 has said nothing to you to warrant a comment like that.

I do have one question, I recieved an email saying there was a new message in this thread and when I checked it looked like Darth Prime had posted just after Sirens last large one at the top of the page but now it appears to be missing. Did anyone else see that message or is my computer just messing up?

Unfortunatley I don't think the racists will ever get over it which is really sad, and also unfortunatley there's no way to make them leave the country we sure don't want them here in Canada! We have enough nuts as it is.

Despite the fact I may not be overly fond of Obama I do hope he has a very safe term as President and that anyone who tries to do anything gets caught before it goes too far.

This is the happiest day of the year, and I'm not even American ! lol

Congulations America and the World, and please welcome the first black president of the United States ! :pink:

It's so touching to see all the African-Americans crying tears of joy, it's so sweet. :)

Widdi thank you for pointing out that people shouldn't be judged by their names or because of the reputation of their religion, that is so true and most people can't see past that, but I'm glad that there are other people who share the same mindset that I happen to have, there is still hope that I might go to an American airport one day and not get a dozen raised eyebrow because of my passport. :)

You know, I'm glad that Obama won, but the fact that everyone's making it a big deal that he's black is really getting on my nerves. To me, it just proves that this country is not over racism, when they are still focusing on the race of a candidate in the first place. It is not about whether he's black or white or Hispanic or Oriental, it's about whether he gets the job done (properly). In my mind, this election doesn't change history at all. Imagine if he does horribly and we don't see another black candidate for years simply because people'll say, "A black man did to this to us." That's why it's ridiculus to focus on race at all.

And, if we keep going in this vein, we'll have to rely on the inclusion of a black woman, a Hispanic man, a Hispanic woman, an Oriental man, an Oriental woman, etc. in office to show that we have real equality, when that's simply a stupid way of looking at it.

EDIT: Gah. Silly me, someone's already pointed this out. :P

I was shocked when I heard this. I voted mostly for Nader knowing that he's pro environment and gay rights, but what he said was just very distasteful. I now wish I had given my vote to Obama instead than him. The better man won, and I hope that he has a smooth upcoming term in office.

As for the topic of race, I believe that it shouldn't be a big issue either when judging Obama on his policies or what he plans for the country as Divinity and Chernabog both pointed out. However, I feel very excited that right now I lived in and have witnessed what will be a turning point in American history.

Some day, if ever I have children, I can sit down and tell them, "Picture it: America, 2008. In the midst of the country's turmoil, I witnessed firsthand our country elect the very first African-American president."

I heard from a friend or my dad (cant remember) that the assination attempt plot was a bit over exaggerated. Whether not they were skinheads, I heard it was just a couple of majorly racist conservative drunks who were bragging about such a plot and someone reported them. I dont think that they were 100% dead serious about going through with the assasination attempt the way they planned it. I mean the plan was to kill exactly 88 people prior to killing Obama. Chances are they wouldve been easily stopped before they even got to 5 anyway.

You said that really well, Tim! It doesn't matter what race or religion an elected official is, but at the same time, Obama has gotten to where some people never thought possible- an African-American man in the White House.
