On various dvd's there's a BATB trailer.

They actually used footage of the OTV in that.
Go watch it and then you know what the laserdisc version looks like.
Exactly like that. Stunning.
And it has nothing to do with the look of the dvd version.
I just checked and couldn't find it anywhere, while I knew the trailers were on the disc. Turns out you have to press the 'Play All' button, so I'll check it out this afternoon. Thanks for the reminder, by the way.
ajmrowland wrote:Yeah, 50GB would allow all three versions of the film to fit comfortably without seamless branching, as each should take an estimated 15 gigs, give or take.

But I think it's already been confirmed that the IMAX version will still be included. I think it's been confirmed in another thread on this site, actually.
Well, Pinocchio already was 23GB, so I don't think Beauty and the Beast would be 15GB.

IMAX trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXFrI8pHP5E

It isn't quite the same as the laserdisc (which I fully believe was the original way the film was intended to look, no matter what anyone says), because belle's skin tone and dress are off, but it's still much, much better than the DVD version. If the blu-ray looks like this then I will be very happy.

I agree, the IMAX trailer looks good, color wise. I could swear there was a blu-ray with a piece of the Ballroom sequence on it. I've definitely seen a cap of it in HD, I just don't know where. The colors looked very similar to this trailer, with the rich blues, and the darker browns. I hope this is what the PE looks like, then we'll be in for a huge treat.

I certainly hope so! I'm going to have a web hunt for that screencap :D - isn't it from the Enchanted blu-ray? Some sort of game on the disc shows clips or something :?

Yes, that IMAX trailer looks stunning.
I agree with you guys, if only this version could be on the next dvd and Blu ray disc.

Unfortunately I'm very worried about this, because this was a trailer for the 2002 release and we all know what it looked like in the end. They tend to use untampered material for trailers a lot, when the actual film on dvd is tampered with like never before.......

I truly believe those are the original CAPS files. Nothing more, nothing less. Just the film as it was supposed to be. Stunning, rich, deep colours, sharp, perfect. They just seem to have a hard time leaving it for what it is....

Because they're to "fix" something that wasn't broken.

Just to slightly drift off the current subject, I don't know if anyone's seen this before. It's obviously unofficial, but i absolutely love it!

Without having seen the IMAX-trailer or the Laserdisc-version, I'd say there is nothing wrong with this clip. Of course, when I saw it in theatre I was only 7 years old, so I can't remember. And the VHS I owned has been out of practice for almost 10 years now, so I couldn't say whether this clip represents the actual, 'real' colors, or not. But it looks great, to me.

Beast_enchantment, I like that cover but I don't love it. It's too drab. It needs more color. I hope they make a beautiful cover for this release that's bright (and includes all the main characters) but not too "cartoony".

I just made that comment to stress that, in and of itself, there's nothing inherently wrong with the picture quality of the clip. But you're right, the IMAX trailer definitly looks much better, color-wise.

For that clip showing Cogsworth's changed animation: did they reanimate that specifically for the PE or IMAX? What else (besides the backgrounds and the lighting) changed specifically for the PE or IMAX?

Well, I believe that's it for changed ANIMATION, but there's some debate on if some scenes were changed - some people say when the Beast fights the wolves in the forest, the blood from his wound is deliberately darker and thus more visible. I'm not 100% convinced of this though.

As for why it was reanimated, they say on the commentary track IIRC. They were never satisfied with the animation, ironically for Marky because they thought it was too exaggerated and cartoony. It was changed for the IMAX release. The DVD is just an off-shoot of the IMAX release.
Most of my Blu-ray collection some of my UK discs aren't on their database

There has also been evidence of them adding some extra detail such as extra fur on the Beast, which I think is unnecesary and somewhat undermining of the original artistic integrity.

That youtube video was amazing.

That's strange, because things can't get much more cartoony than the "stretching head" of Cogsworth in the new version. And if "cartoony" was what they cared about they would have sticked with the IMAX version for the dvd release (files direct from CAPS), and not some cartoonish off-shoot of the IMAX release.

I've also read somewhere on the net that the original animator of Cogsworth wasn't too happy with the original movements, because he was sick or on vacation the day when that scene was animated, and he told the company this and they made a note of it. So when they made the IMAX version, they were able to change things, and they let another animator re-draw it, but he was actually very disappointed in the new version too, and wished he could have done it himself, only he doesn't work at Disney anymore. And I agree with him, it's actually not an improvement and even more cartoony.
Cartoony is not about the "arm movements" itself. It's about a character's stretching face and colours and lack of depth in this case.

I also find it very interesting that people who actually accepted the dvd version.... (because their motto is "everything new must be the best", or " Belle's red hair is what the original filmmakers intended", or whatever...)
agree that the trailer for the IMAX version (original CAPS files) looks fantastic/better.

I hope this is a lesson for Disney.

IMAX trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXFrI8pHP5E

And I would love to hear what the people who said the dvd version was directly taken from the original caps files have to say now they know that's not true......

It's such a relief to finally be able to show those people that the laserdisc and vhs colors and look of the film, otv screenshots are practically the same as the original caps files. I really hope this is how the film will be saved for future generations, and that the dvd travesty will be forgotten very soon.
