What I believe throws off that theory is that they were ready to start a whole new line of "treasures" under the Legacy title and look. I've mentioned it before, but I'll mention it again, the Treasures line was never being scrapped, just changed so it would have a new look and probably not have to stick to the old "rules" of the original collection, like having Leonard Maltin, material mostly created under Walt, limited prints, and so on.MK Sharp wrote:No, but I reckon it's down on the canvas and breathing hard.slave2moonlight wrote:And yet, the Disney Treasures line is still not dead...

So aside from not being called "Treasures", and not having the same packaging as previous Treasures, and having different content criteria to the previous Treasures; aside, indeed from the fact that you would never have seen another Walt Disney Treasures release again, the Treasures were still going to continue. OK...slave2moonlight wrote:What I believe throws off that theory is that they were ready to start a whole new line of "treasures" under the Legacy title and look. I'd have more faith in these arguments that the Treasures line will live forever and that all that's needed is a blitz campaign to make the general public more archive-Disney-material prone if it weren't for the fact that even on this forum - this very forum, UltimateDisney, a great confluence of Disney afficianados - the golden age shorts and 50s/60s TV programs are quite a minority interest.

I'll buy any of the Treasures, since it's all been interesting to me. Although I may never watch half the stuff on On The Front Lines again (unless for a project) it's still nice having it though. Personally I have an intrest in the 50's and 60's programs, however not at 34$ a tin especially if it ends up being less interesting. I often found the Mickey/Donald cartoon shorts as the anchors in the waves, the rest of the tins I'll only purchase randomly if I find it, or if it's at a decent price.
I think a second type of Treasures sets could come out, but instead of being Walts era, it could be from the 70's onwards since there's a lot of material that would be interesting to get on dvd.
The Treasures line probably won't live forever if they stick to Walt's era only, but they can always adapt and evolve to the next era

But its not a false premise if thats all they make. You cannot sell more than you make - its impossible. As it stands, Disney can only get back the revenue on 50,000 sales for the investment they put into making the Treasure set. And judging by on-line stores, at the moment they aren't even selling 50,000 WORLDWIDE (because a lot of overseas customers import their Treasures sets).merlinjones wrote:>>50,000 MAXIMUM sales.<<
False premise.
Look, we can all agree the sets aren't being marketed correctly. I'm sure most will agree its insane that some of the sets aren't released overseas at all, and others are released years later with no publicity at all. I'm sure some of us have ideas on how the sets could be better released and marketed. But as it stands, the sales of the sets are restricted by the print run Disney chooses. And it appears none of the recent sets have sold out - even with the restrictive print runs.
If something doesn't work, you either fix it (which costs money) or you throw it away. The same is true in business.
I agree. But as I said, huge investments like full restoration of the Disney archives isn't done for free. And in Hollywood, like any other big business, there's no such thing as a fee lunch.Slave2Moonlight wrote:The most expensive aspect of producing the Treasures is the restoration, and that benefits Disney far beyond just the Treasures sets. It's something they need to do anyway.
The restoration department, just like any other department/business at Disney will be expected to make a profit on its expense (or at the very least break even). That's how big business and internal cost centres work. I would imagine that the same cost centre which paid for the restoration work, will be expected to get a return on that investment over a number of years by charging for other cost centre's to access their restored materials.
As for restoration, do you really think top of the restoration pile are episodes from the various Disney tv shows too? They may need restoring in that the originals may be slowly decomposing, or in that Disney aims to restore everything that they own by a certain goal date. But I'm pretty sure if left to their own devices the company would be restoring some of its older live action films ahead of tv episodes. Again, this makes me think that some of the costs of the restoration are shared.
And yet the releases scheduled for future Legacy releases are now in the Treasures line. Doesn't that strike you as odd?Slave2Moonlight wrote:What I believe throws off that theory is that they were ready to start a whole new line of "treasures" under the Legacy title and look. I believe the Treasures line was an attempt to "kickstart" (if you will) the sales for this type of material to the early Walt Disney Treasures levels. And it failed. This this (final?) wave of treasure contains
* a semi-obligational release of Donald to complete his run
* a release already announced for the Legacy line (and perhaps it was even fully authored for the legacy line at the time)
* a release of a movie which has been on and off the schedule for years, and is probably only off the normal release schedule now because Disney no longer release older live action films at all. Note that this release also seems to include a lot of "padding".
It's hardly a ringing endorsement for the line is it?
The Donald shorts were probably all assembled and marked when the first set was mooted, who knows, perhaps Maltin already recorded all of the intros and from the vault footage at the same time as recording the contents of the first Donald set. It certainly makes financial sense to do so. I have a feeling little work is needed to complete this set.
The contents for Destino set was probably finalised while the first [only] wave of Legacy sets was being brainstormed. Perhaps some of the actual work was done while work was being done of the titles that were eventually released under the Legacy branding. Again I have a feeling at least half of the work was done before hand.
Finally, the Dr Syn set seems to be an excercise in padding out a 2 disc set with little content. I know that there's a considerable number of people who are excited to get both the TV episodes and the film, but to most of the people - even people who collect and enjoy the Treasures releases - it seems the ultimate double-dip. I also have a sneaking suspicion that a DVD transfer of the film has been knocking about at Disney since 2002-2003ish, and this will be the version that ends up on the Treasures release. And do we even know if the TV episodes on the Treasures sets are restored as such? Or just electronically processed to make the image clearer?

I really like the idea of a post-Walt-era line of DVDs...that would be great! Like with special episodes of "The Wonderful World of Disney" (for things such as "Totally Minnie" and even the New Kids on the Block episode of the show, etc.).Chernabog_Rocks wrote: I think a second type of Treasures sets could come out, but instead of being Walts era, it could be from the 70's onwards since there's a lot of material that would be interesting to get on dvd.

There is still so much Walt-era material that Disney could put on DVD, though. The Disney Movie Club is doing a good job putting some TV movies on DVD that otherwise may not have seen the light of day, and I do hope that they continue- even though the bonus features aren't there, at least the movies are coming out.

Now you're just getting nit-picky. I made the point before that the Legacy Collection is basically the same type of product as the Treasures. Yes, they changed the name and the casings and dropped Maltin, but it was basically the same kind of release: Rarely seen or unreleased, classic Disney material targeted at collectors. It's that which I've been talking about here. Whether or not it comes in a silver tin casing that reads "Treasures" or a plastic casing with a round tin inside doesn't matter, though I like the silver tin casings a bit more.MK Sharp wrote: So aside from not being called "Treasures", and not having the same packaging as previous Treasures, and having different content criteria to the previous Treasures; aside, indeed from the fact that you would never have seen another Walt Disney Treasures release again, the Treasures were still going to continue. As for the Treasures line continuing for a long time, I don't know, but there really has been no sign from Disney that they intend to stop it completely, and that's why, as I've been looking back on it, it doesn't seem that likely to me anymore. But, again, as I've said all along, despite certain differences, I consider the Legacy Collection and Treasures Collection to be essentially the same thing, the reason being that, while it is presented a little differently, they are delivering the same kind of product. As I said at least once before, if they want to change the name and packaging, I don't care. The only thing that concerns me if they do that is that they won't tie up the loose ends from the Treasures tins for those of us who loved more than just Donald Duck.
I agree. Unfortunately this wave does seem pretty weak and IMO that is only an indication that Disney is not putting much into the Treasures series anymore. I feel that this will be the last wave and I'm also the first to say that it's really a shame. But hey, on the bright side we will at least be getting another Donald set. That alone makes this wave worthwhile.mybluerabbit wrote:Well I won't be chearing if they end, but once the 4th donald comes out, I will certainly be contenta-net-fan wrote:All I know is I wont be with Mr Toad cheering on this collections end.![]()

Agreed, and Disney has always seemed to know that more than anyone. So why have they still not canceled the Treasures collection? Surely not just to please fans with the final Donald release. You simply must have missed something in all the math you've been doing. Either that, or the folks at Disney actually do still have a sliver of respect for the classic material and the fans who love it. It just doesn't make sense that they'd be announcing another wave, final or not. It also doesn't make sense that they'd try to start a new line, "The Legacy Collection", which is essentially the same type of product, if the Treasures are such a huge failure for them.2099net wrote: If something doesn't work, you either fix it (which costs money) or you throw it away. Not if you've been paying attention. When the Legacy Collection came along, Maltin was giving word that the Treasures Collection was over. However, the main product was the same basic thing. It was an outlet for the classics and rare stuff, and stuff that is simply more appealing to collectors than to the average Joe. Still 2-disc sets around the same price, too. Treasures collectors got upset about the changes though, and Disney went back to the old format. It's not that complicated, and I wouldn't be surprised if they try it again after this next Treasures wave. Donald will be out and it's probably true that they don't consider the other stuff as "loose ends," so they'll probably think the changes will go off better. That might be the end of the Treasures line as we know it, but I don't doubt they will still be around in one form or another (probably the return of the Legacy Collection).2099net wrote:And yet the releases scheduled for future Legacy releases are now in the Treasures line. As for the quality of Treasures content, that has often been a mixed bag. But, again, why release more at all if there will be no sales/profit? Even if they had the material ready to go. There are more cost efficient ways to release Dr. Syn and Destino. Neither need 2-disc sets and they'd sell better as singles. It just doesn't make sense that the line hasn't benefited Disney to some degree or that they have plans to end it (and I mean truly end it, not just changing the title and casings and dropping Maltin).
All I'll say S2M is, I'm amazed given Disney's attitude to pre-1990 content on DVD over the past two or three years how anyone can have even a slightest bit of hope that the Treasures will continue.
You know, the past few years have consisted of nothing by Disney Home Video repeatedly punching people like me in the face (metaphorically that is) with the triple-blow of stupid pointless new releases (Disney Channel series in 4 or 5 episode compilations), pointless re-releases (with stupid subtitle "edition" names) and constant contempt towards anything pre-1990. Even the DMC releases (unavailble worldwide) don't even have chapter stops they're done on such a threadbare budget. The Platinum releases even started to scrape the lower end of the barrel (but things are looking up a bit now on that front).
The Treasures were nothing more than an annual PR stunt for Disney("Look, we do release older stuff - so there") The fact that this years wave is being announced 9 months in advance has a hint of PR spin about it.
One day you get tired of being punched in the face, and learn to block (metaphorically speaking of course). That means not getting excited only to be knocked back down by reality.

I hope that these shorts will be anamorphic, unlike the CinemaScope shorts in Disney Rarities. All of Donald’s CinemaScope shorts will be presented in their original widescreen aspect ratio for the first time on video.
Grand Canyonscope (a Donald Duck short from 1954) was released on disc No. 1 of 20000 Leagues under the Sea, but it was non-anamorphic and the image quality was coarse:

Who's excited? I just don't feel it's warranted to be so sure of the "It's over!" idea. After all, we've heard that before. I still have an "anything can happen" feeling about it in general, just like I do about almost everything. However, while I agree with everything you said about Disney's current DVD program, the only thing we've heard from Disney in regards to the Treasures is that there will be another wave. If it's just PR, so be it, as long as I get the stuff. Of course, you have to factor in the reality that I consider the Legacy Collection to be a continuation of the Treasures collection, and I wouldn't be surprised if it returns or a new line starts up after the Donald 4 wave. That might be the final Treasures wave as we know it, but I see no reason to get worked up about it being the end of our collector-aimed Disney DVD releases just yet. However, I'll still be ticked if that is the case (I don't expect to see the Swamp Fox/Baca loose ends tied up if they change the title/format again, though I wouldn't be surprised to see those other shorts released).2099net wrote:All I'll say S2M is, I'm amazed given Disney's attitude to pre-1990 content on DVD over the past two or three years how anyone can have even a slightest bit of hope that the Treasures will continue.

Thanks for the clarification of your feelings. I just feel that since Disney DOES read these boards that you should be a little more supportive in what you say of the Treasures and more encouraging in your words of pressing for more releases of this series. Focus on the positive, not on the negative. Its not up to us to conclude weather or not it is a good business move for Disney to continue this series or not or if the sales warrant further releases. As long as the Treasures are giving me this type of Walt Era entertainment, presented with respect and quality as it has been....thats all I really care about. All I know is that I watch each volume released entirely and enjoy them so much each holiday season and want them to continue.Mr. Toad wrote:Excuse me but when did I ever say I was cheering the end of the line?

I just looked on AnimatedNews.com and it said that Donald 4 will include "Donald In Mathmagicland". Here's the article explaining such: http://animated-views.com/2008/disney-t ... viii-2008/. You'll have to scroll down the article until you find the Donald set explanation, as it's at the bottom. Anyway, it has been confirmed that "Donald In Mathmagicland" will be seen on Donald 4.

By direct-marketing, I mean the Walt Disney TV library is the absolutely perfect "infomercial" style box set or series - - "The Wonderful World of Color" was so beloved by baby boomers, it's the perfect material to sell to grandparents and nostalgic boomers who want to relive it or pass it along. Same for Walt's movies as a separate series of box sets.
Imagine an infomercial hosted by Julie and Dick - - or Kurt and Hayley, promising "Walt Disney's original classics just as you remember them, restored and uncut, to pass along to your own family - to recreate new memories for your kids and grandkids. Some of these great shows have not been seen in decades and are available for the first time on DVD. These are the shows you have been looking for in stores and online. Available exclusively in this offer."
The material needs to be taken to "the people" not just the fans. There is real money out there in the broad market. But they have to create the demand and awareness.

Thanks for clarifying. However, all television advertising is considered indirect advertising as you have no control over who receives it. An example of direct marketing is emails to those who have signed up for something they are interested in. In that case the advertisor knows they the group seeing the advertisement is the target market. There is no control over television advertising.merlinjones wrote:By direct-marketing, I mean the Walt Disney TV library is the absolutely perfect "infomercial" style box set or series - - "The Wonderful World of Color" was so beloved by baby boomers, it's the perfect material to sell to grandparents and nostalgic boomers who want to relive it or pass it along.
Available exclusively in this offer.".
The material needs to be taken to "the people" not just the fans. There is real money out there in the broad market. But they have to create the demand and awareness
Infomercials are typically used for products that have no market penetration. They are horidly expensive. Think about it if a 30 second spot costs 100,000 what does 30 minutes cost you? They are not cost effective but are used to gain market share and thus the advertisor is banking not only on the current sales but future sales. No way an item with only 50,000 units and limited gross profit per unit could use infomercials. You really need to create big time volume for this type of marketing to succeed.

If you are going to say something like that say why the assumptions are wrong. Just saying there is no weight in the information really does not do anything. Tell us why. Give us examples of pre 1990 releases that Disney has concentrated on lately. Show us how Platinum releases have increased or maintained quality. Maybe I should go back and teach Philosophy - Logical Self Defence again.a-net-fan wrote:These comments are completely BOGUS!
