The 2008 Doctor Who DVD thread (R1 & R2) TV Movie in USA
Well, I've nothing against Boom Town really, and like most of RTD's scripts I find it much more rewatchable Moffet's. [Waits for Escapay to recover!] Moffet certainly has better plotting, story construction and wit. But RTD's scripts always feature people who seem more "real" to me and thus I get more out of them on subsequent viewings..
It's truely Russell's greatest gift, and his greatest curse, because while his dialogue sparkles, his narrative flow is sometimes somewhat erattic. That's why I grew to love Love and Monsters, the people - all of them, including Victor Kennedy seem like real people. And while some of RTD's jokes fall flat, there so much humour and joy in just watching them all interact. And of course, it's has some of Jackie's best scenes too as a bonus.
Anyhow, if I had one complaint about Boom Town its the weak ending, which is in many respects a version of the Parting of the Ways ending. Meh, some will say its foreshadowing, but I still think its weak as it effectively sidesteps the moral questions and removed the need for a decision which was the whole point of the story. Oh, and it also effectively "kills" Margaret, which upsets me - Revenge of the Slitheen in The Sarah Jane Adventures would have been so much better with Annette Badland in the cast.
I've just finished reading the opening of the Torchwood Archives book, and hey presto there's a big photo of Margaret on the section that covers Boom Town, and I immediately felt a little sadness that we'll never see Margaret again. (If you're interested how Doctor's Jack never met Torchwood's Jack, an unsent email from a suspicious Suzie to the other Torchwood staff reveals Jack locked everyone, including himself, in the hub that day. And Suzie questions why? and how much Jack knew about the earthquake they just experienced. Ha! The irony of Suzie being suspicious of Jack!)
Anyhow, more of the infamous Trial DVD set
I've listened to all of the commentaries now and they're really a mixed bunch. I think its far to say Doctor Who commentaries are often much better than the typical movie commentary, but some of these are a little flat; a shame, as Colin's normally good company on his stories. The Mysterious Planet has perhaps the flattest. I've fallen in love with Chris Clough though – a truly likeable man with a great sense of fun and humour. Another reason I can't wait for the Happiness Patrol DVD!
I must say, Eric's two solo commentaries are incredibly good, and again not the bitch-fest I anticipated. That said, Eric could give university lectures in "how to be passive aggressive". He doesn't so much as give back-handed compliments, but back-handed insults.

Thanks for helping me remember the episodes, Scaps!
I admit that I gained the interest to explore the show a little more. My problem is, though, is that the reason I was able to see the episodes as they aired on TV is because my friends downloaded the episode just as it finished airing in the UK.
With the series already on DVD I would feel bad to download the episodes. And before anyone says "rent", Netflix doesn't deliver to Puerto Rico for some reason :\ .

Hmm. I must be remembering wrong, because I remember reading a post on a forum (either here or while I was lurking at OG) where the person was very critical of "Boom Town". And it seemed rather netty-ish (the reasons why they were critical).netty wrote:Well, I've nothing against Boom Town really
Unfortunately, UD doesn't have a "fainting" emoticon.netty wrote:and like most of RTD's scripts I find it much more rewatchable Moffet's. Moffat scripts/episodes are usually my favorites and they often get my vote for best of each season (though Paul Cornell's Human Nature/Family of Blood from S3 got that vote). But I can somewhat see why you'd think RTD episodes are more rewatchable.
I always felt the ending was appropriate, as it offers the message that there is always the possibility for redemption, even in the most extreme and gravest cases. Throughout the episode, Margaret/Blon does nothing but beg for her life or attempt to escape with little regard for who may get hurt, but there are moments when she regrets what she is, which makes her (for lack of a better word) more human for the audience. That she does get redeemed in the end of the episode brings it all full circle even if it's essentially a "reset" that negated the entire purpose of the episode. I wouldn't consider it a weak ending, but an optimistic one that reminds viewers that even a "villain" deserves a second chance.netty wrote:Anyhow, if I had one complaint about Boom Town its the weak ending, which is in many respects a version of the Parting of the Ways ending. Wow, that's quite interesting! Too bad they didn't feature this in the Torchwood series, especially since they were able to address the whole "Tosh in Aliens of London" and "Gwyneth and Gwen" issues.netty wrote:(If you're interested how Doctor's Jack never met Torchwood's Jack, an unsent email from a suspicious Suzie to the other Torchwood staff reveals Jack locked everyone, including himself, in the hub that day. Does Puerto Rico have any Blockbuster? I'm sure it has a Netflix-like program as well, so you could rent from there.pap64 wrote:My problem is, though, is that the reason I was able to see the episodes as they aired on TV is because my friends downloaded the episode just as it finished airing in the UK.

I downloaded Seasons 3 and 4 as they aired in the UK, then watched them again on SciFi to show my support. And with Season 4, I burned it on DVD as well just to hold me over until November, when the proper DVD comes out.

Well, I wasn't too impressed with Boom Town right away. But that's why the internet was invented. So ignorant plebs could lash out at things they don't understand.
As for the ending of Boom Town, I still say if totally side-steps the ethical argument throughout the episode, because its not The Doctor's decision. We never find out what the Doctor would do. Based on previous actions, the Doctor would hand Margaret over - he's done so in the past with various villains/monsters and then disappeared before he has to view any of his consequences. He's never really be challenged or considered his actions. So RTD was actually addressing a remarkably mature issue, of which the Doctor would be damned if he did, and damned if he didn't. Now, if he had come up with the regression idea, it would have been a triumph, echoing the Fifth Doctor's desire to always find another way.
I have actually praised the Ninth Doctor (and will continue to do so) for being such a hands-off Doctor. Almost all of his stories are resolved by the actions of others. But the critical thing here is these others are inspired by his Doctor - he makes them into heroes, he makes them see doing what's right is right. He makes them live again, even if doing so means ultimately dying. Here it was the TARDIS's actions, seemingly unprompted - at least from the Doctor, sort of giving him a "get out of jail free" card to his moral dilemma. But I do understand it establishes the TARDIS as a living, thinking entity required for The Parting of the Ways.
In some respects, the real fault is (once again) probably the 45 minute format. I wish the BBC would give the show a full 1 hour slot. Most BBC dramas are 1 hour these days.

The deleted scenes sound good, I like how they get some form of context by RTDs introductions, and as always the commentaries sound great (Who has a surprisingly high hit-rate on its commentaries).
Given the lack of David's diaries (for what ever reason) I'm disappointed we don't get more from other actors/participants which we know were recorded (Noel definitely did, Catherine has mentioned one I think, and Kylie's seems to have disappeared into the stardust...)
The Journey So Far sounds OK I suppose (damning with faint praise, I've been attending some of Seward's lectures!), but really we should have got more specially shot mini-featurettes for each episode given the lack of diary content.

Well, sometimes that's a good thing. After all, the episode is very Margaret-centric, and I always felt it could have been better told if it was entirely from her point of view (though we wouldn't get some of the priceless scenes such as Mickey knocking on the door and seeing Jack and being confused).netty wrote:As for the ending of Boom Town, I still say if totally side-steps the ethical argument throughout the episode, because its not The Doctor's decision. I wouldn't mind hourlong episodes!netty wrote:In some respects, the real fault is (once again) probably the 45 minute format. I wish the BBC would give the show a full 1 hour slot. Most BBC dramas are 1 hour these days.

Same here.netty wrote:Given the lack of David's diaries (for what ever reason) I'm disappointed we don't get more from other actors/participants which we know were recorded (Noel definitely did, Catherine has mentioned one I think, and Kylie's seems to have disappeared into the stardust...)
There's one available on YouTube, with Colin Morgan (Jethro from "Midnight"). It's only like a minute or so, but the fact that it exists says that there obviously were other video diaries possibly done by others (Noel, Catherine, and Kylie included). Would have been great if for each episode we had a video diary from a guest star, and occasionally a video diary from Catherine.
I agree. The Journey So Far would be good for someone who's new to Who entirely and needs a quick catchup before the Specials and Series 5. But it really just sounds like a half-hour recap.netty wrote:The Journey So Far sounds OK I suppose (damning with faint praise, I've been attending some of Seward's lectures!), but really we should have got more specially shot mini-featurettes for each episode given the lack of diary content.
And I agree that they should've given mini-featurettes that are episode-related (similar to Season 1). I'd love to have seen a "Redesigning the Sontarans" type feature for Sontaran Stratagem/Poison Sky, or even a "The Music of the Ood" for Planet of the Ood. Take an important factor of each episode and give it a featurette, as the DWC's are as of late too short and too glossy.

A bit of repetition, but somebody on the DoctorWhoForum seems to share Escapay's desire to place everything in neat lists, so here's the E-Space trilogy details known so far (including commentary participants):

Glad to see the article finally up! I wonder when we can expect this States-side, and if the Season 26 boxset will be day-and-date (so I can finally get "Ghost Light" and "The Curse of Fenric"). I just hope the SRP is better than buying the titles separately (like, $70 instead of a combined $100)

Still, I'd love the Key to Time box instead. Even if it'll just sit on my shelf squeezed between The Invasion of Time and Destiny of the Daleks.
ETA:
Steve Manfred posted some details at the RT forum...
- The box set will be sold in a slim-tray digistack inside a slipcase. It will also include a booklet that has all the copy that was in the six UK inserts.
- The single stories will also be available separately in our usual Amaray cases. The first five stories will be 1-discers and "Armageddon Factor" will be a 2-disc.
- The old set will be allowed to dwindle in supply and then after March 3 retailers will no longer be able to order it.
This/these will be the only title R1 gets in March.

I'm wondering now, could Full Circle be a "Standard Edition"? It seems unlikely, but the boxset is quite cheap. But even a standard edition would go through the BBFC for the photogallery.
Anyhow, recently I got the Sarah Jane Adventures S1 and Doctor Who S4 DVD boxsets.
TSJA surprisingly is in an old style foldaway digipack (I was expecting a 'paged' digistack release like Torchwood's) but its one of the best looking digipacks I've seen for a while, with good use of the available area to showcase the series' villains.

Got the Doctor Who Series 4 set on Monday, but I've not had time to spin any of the discs at all. However, I was surprised to see the inner case designs giving equal weight to Billie, Lis and Freema as David, Catherine and John get.
Note: I have the standard sleeve, not the HMV Dalek exclusive shown below.

SERIES FOUR
I just picked up Series Four today at Best Buy in there advertised "exclusive" steel tin. This was in no way a selling feature to me, but it was priced at $38.73, which was well below the first week advertised price of $69.99. Yes, the complete series! I could not believe it either and I must have stared at the thing for several minutes, because I thought it was only a partial set at first.
I took it up to the check out and figured it was miss-marked and sure enough it did register at $69.99, but the clerk said that they were in fact $38.73 so that is what I paid.
I just wanted to post this for other Who Fans to check out their local Best Buy store to see is this was a local anomaly or a first week substantially reduced release price. If anyone else encountered this, please post.

Escapay,
Yes, I purchased it for ~ $39. Were you able to purchase a copy for the same price?

Unfortunately, no.
I never had a chance to go to Best Buy during that Friday or Saturday (for reasons which I'm rather pissed off at) and by the time I had a chance to go to Best Buy this week, they were all back to the $69.99 price. Harrumph!

That is a shame! Like I said earlier, I never expected to see it priced that low during the introduction week. Best Buy had never done this level of price reduction before with Series 1-3. Usually the intro price was between $65-70 for the first week and then in increased to around $80-85.
I hope this trend continues with future releases, because that was definitely a good cost savings to start off the Christmas season.

Thanks, netty!
I hadn't seen the cover art yet, but found the E-Space article last night (and even posetd in the RT forum, a rare occurrence!).
I'm glad to see that Full Circle won't be Standard Edition (as was feared because of the lack of BBFC listings). And "The Frayling Reading" for State of Decay sounds really interesting, it's probably the extra I'm looking forward to the most! And more Lalla! Glad to see she's participating in more interviews. "Lalla's Wardrobe" sounds quite cool, as it looks at her time on the show (giving us more material about Season 17). It's surprising that Matthew Waterhouse gets a featurette all on his own, yet he's not featured in any of the "making of" documentaries. Perhaps he covers it all (along with his Fifth Doctor stories) in his featurette, so it would seem rather redundant to include it again in the regular docs.
