Sweeney Todd: The Movie

Very cool lord-of-sith. Your friend has a very, how can I put this...English High School student look. (For some strange reason I'm thinking about To Sir, With Love right now...). Can't wait to see better quality videos though!

I saw the film on Saturday and I liked it but here are some things I did not like...

-The opening cerdits (I was thinking that they seemed just like a darker version of the 'Charile' opening.)

-Johnny is a wonderful actor but I think he was wrong for the part. I had always felt with the musical that Sweeney should be was played with certain glee that makes you almost root for the killer untill about Beadle on where he should finally get scary. He only seemed playful with the 'This is piss. Piss & ink' exchange where he just seemed like Sparow with funny hair. Also I feel that the 'change' in Todd after Mrs. Lovett's error was revealed was not convincing enough and therefore made the tension drop quite a bit.

-Alan was another thing. Like Johnny he is a wonderful actor but in his scenes he filp flops from being rather intelligent to being clueless. I think they should have comitted to playing him one way or the other. Also if you MUST play him as an intelligent man for the love of god take out the lines about wondering why Johanna could not possibly want to marry you!

-God That's Good never saying GOD THATS GOOD!

-Johanna bugged me although I'm not sure why.

-I thought the Judge's death went on a bit too long and Nellie's really did not need to be shown at all.

Now things I liked were....

-Helena! Not as bubbly as Lovett nor as good a singer but makes Nellie her own ALMOST as wonderful but deffinetely sexier character. (I now rank Angela 1st, Helena 2nd, and Patti affectionately 3rd.)

-'Toby'. I know not many liked him but I was thinking that he was just right in the role.

-'Anthony' was under used but a good actor, nice in a rather drab role and not bad lookin' either.

-Sacha really surprised me! I'm not one for Borat but I know he CAN be funny and apperntly sing. Mixing the two for this role really works for him.

-Timothy Spall! Again under used but wonderfully slimy. (Singing) And might I say my Lord? That he can carry his tune.

-THE MUSIC!

Despite what I see as flaws, I enjoyed the film very much but it won't stop me from hunting the Angela Lansbury/George Hearn DVD.

Sidenote: Don't see Enchanted again after this or you will have the thought of Pip in the oven or Robert & Nathaniel getting a... shave.

I saw Sweeney Todd at my local Cinema today. I thought that it was violent but entertaining at the same time. Johnny Depp was pretty good as Sweeny Todd and the songs were good too.

I agree with JiminyCrick about the opening credits. They were too much like CATCF's credits.

Overall, I give the movie a 7/10

(All the previews before the movie were TERRIBLE!)

That's one thing I don't get about Tim Burton movies. In his films, it seems CGI isn't taken very seriously.

To me, it was no more fake than the rest of the movie. I mean, blood doesn't really look like tomato soup just like 19th century London wasn't really devoid of all color save for flamboyant street barbers.

As for the opening credits... yeah, they have the resemblance to "Charlie", but that in turn is vaguely similar to "Edward Scissorhands", "Batman", "Batman Returns", and "Beetlejuice" to an extent. I don't view it so much as being negatively similar as being something Tim Burton just likes to do for opening credits.

Lord-of-sith, those are fantastic performances! Your Lovett is on Lupone's level, or at least sounds very good like her, and while I didn't get too much from Sweeney (his voice is good but not outstanding in what I saw), you as the Judge were very evil and low and I'm sure very different from how you usually are, so it's a great character that took effort to make seperate from yourself, excellent! Good singing, too, probably one of the best sounding Judges. Oh, and of course, though it's sad for me to say it, you all sung it better than everyone in the movie. If I really had to choose, though, I found Depp's singing to be more beautiful than your Sweeeney's, not better, but more beautiful. I may also prefer Carter's singing, too, because she also sang more beautifully to me. This is just my preferences. But it doesn't mean it's better, as we know Sweeney and Lovett aren't supposed to sound beautiful!

OMG I just realized - "Porch Theater" HA.

Yay, JiminyCrick agrees with me about Alan being too smart a judge!

Enough with the complaints about the fake blood! It's pretty obvious that with the amazing attention to detail, the lavishnss, all the work put int othe production, and above all, the stylization, that the blood was intended to look that way, either as homage to old horror movie blood or the original stage productions blood, I don't know. Besides, I thought people didn't want it to be too gory, the fake blood takes off some of the edge. I'm glad SpringHeel explained. By the way, did you mean that Tim Burton seems to always have things being made in his opening credits?

Thank you Disney Duster for your kind comments! I'd have to say that our Mrs. Lovett is much more amazing in person (or a better quality video) but I definatley understand what your saying. And thank you very much for your comments towards me! I appreciate it very much!

I'm thinking about putting Green Finch and Ladies in their Sensitivities . The trouble is, is that the wind is more present in GF, but I'll see how it works.

Strangely, I just caught this in your post. I'd like to thank you especially for this comment. Though you likely didn't know this, I sing Tenor 1 (most of the time) in my schools choir, but I always love singing base as well (it's fun when it's not harmony

). So thank you for this comment that is truer than I'm sure you thought!

Kudos to "Sweeney" for winning best picture (musical / comedy) and Johnny Depp for best actor (musical/comedy)! I was really hoping Helena would win, as her performance for me was a really amazing new take on the role, but it was one that I knew from the start would annoy people who were expecting a brassier goofy take on Lovett.

Still, hope this bodes well for the movie... it's gonna be a tough Oscar season.

Yay for the two Globes, but Oscar night won't look that good I guess, although I found the Drama category pretty lame this year, but the musical movie never wins.

Your welcome, lord-of-sith, and it is more amazing to me that you actually are a tenor...wow.

Once again SpringHeell and I agree on something. I was hoping Helena would win, and was surprised Johnny won, because I thought Helena was better than Johnny. But I suppose it could be that there were too many great actresses and not enough great actors, kind of like how there don't seem to be many great pictures...not that Johnny wasn't great, just that Helena was better.

However, I believe Helena will have a better chance at the Oscars, actually, because there's no seperation of categories for comedy and musical and drama, so the actress who won for best actress in a comedy or musical will be absent, and leave Helena the best choice out of what actresses they do nominate.

And I can't be the only one who's annoyed with the fact that musical is lumped with comedy in a seperate category instead of being considered as good as drama. I mean, did you look at Sweeney Todd? It's a drama! I have the same feelings for the best animated film category...

Congratulations to Sweeney Todd on winning the Golden Globe for Best Picture (Comedy or Musical) and congratulations to Johnny Depp on winning Best Actor (Comedy or Musical). Too bad it could not win the other two awards it was nominated for.

Yay for Sweeney! I was very excited when those two awards were announced, this is just what it needed! Finally Johnny's getting some love!

Though I'm not quite sure how on earth she has a better chance, Disney Duster, I do say that I'll be rooting like mad for HBC if she by chance gets nominated for the oscars (though I don't see it happening).

Sweeney Todd is nominated for Best Actor (Johnny Depp), Best Art Direction and Best Costumes. I thought there would have been more considering it WON the golden globe for Best Picture (Musical/Comedy), but what can you do.

I never thought it'd get a Best Picture Nom, since it is a musical and the Academy doesn't like those too much, although the Best Picture category is pretty lame this year, imho.

I am really glad though that Johnny Depp got another nomination as Best Actor. But again, he won't win. You can't win with a musical.

Chicago won, and it was a film released this decade. I noticed that the last musical that won the award for best picture before Chicago was Oliver! . And that was released in 1968! What do they have against musicals anyway? Especially since so many musicals have won that award before.
