Do they ever explain his return to civilisation in Torchwood, or is that something we are waiting to hear in S3?

Torchwood seems to suggest Jack's been back for years. He seems to have spent lots of time in the Second World War for example (in the Empty Child its implied he's just there in passing so he can run his scam).
It doesn't explain how (or when) he got back, but being as he's immortal since being ressurrected on the Gamestation at the end of Parting of the Ways, its not unreasonable to assume he may have been hanging around Cardiff and the rift for a fair few decades in the hope the Doctor would turn up (its also suggested in the final episode Jack designed the Rift Manipulator in the Torchwood Hub, which looks and sounds somewhat similar to the TARDIS rotor too...)
I think - but this is speculation still - the Doctor-lite episode which is written by Stephen Moffatt will address some of the questions about Jack. Its scheduled before the "official" return of Captain Jack in Utopia, and to me, if you're going to have an episode with little of the Doctor or his companion, Jack seems the obvious "selling point".

The BBC have revealed the May and June 2007 Classic series DVD releases for the UK:
Robot (Tom Bakers 1st story) and...
er...
well...
Oh I'm going to have to say it at some point so I may as well say it now
TimeLash (A rather 'interesting' Colin Baker story).
Still, it could have been worse, for all it's sins TimeLash entertains, in a way. Possibly.
At least it's not the the constantly dull Revenge of the Cybermen. But... oh no, they talking about releasing that stinker later in '07.

Sounds like Timelash will be a standard edition. Can't say I was expecting more.
The other week I managed to nab a Captain Jack and The Empty Child action figure set

Today I managed to grab Slitheen and The Space Pig (Yes! I have The Space Pig!)

Two Autons

Dalek with Mutant Reveal

The Autons are technically the best, but it can't be hard to make plastic figures of... er... plastic figures! But I'm in love with my Space Pig. I'm going to call him Percy, and I will love him and love him until I die (or I get fed up, which ever comes first).
The images are from Ebay, but only because I have a very poor camera.

Mild Spoilers (there's no sound)
http://freemaagyeman.com/news/2007/03/0 ... ore-video/
Is this the filming of Captain Jack's last scene in Doctor Who Series 3 before he returns to the Torchwood Hub for Torchwood Series 2? It sure looks like is being filmed at Cardiff for Cardiff (I think you can see the Millennium Centre's fountain (aka the hub) in the background).

An interesting, but quite long, article, which confirms series 4 has been greenlit, implies a 2007 Christmas special and... indicates Russell T Davies may be leaving after series 4. If that's the case, I can see Tennant leaving then too.
All change for Doctor Who series 5!

If the mini-spoilers on this page are correct (Captain Jack spoilers) then it shows I was right. All the flashbacks we see in Torchwood are the immortal Captain Jack since he landed in 1880 - so it appears he did fall in love (and one presumes spend considerable time with) Estelle in World War II, and she wasn't just a quick fling during one of his (pre-Doctor Who) time scams.2099net wrote:Torchwood seems to suggest Jack's been back for years. This weeks Radio Times has a special 16 page Doctor Who supplement to celebrate it's return to British screens this Saturday night. In it is a two page episode guide, written by Russell T Davies where he reveals for the first time the episode titles for each episode, but also teases us with teasers.
Here are the episode names, as well as selected comments from the man himself about each.
1. Smith and Jones
"Welcome on board, Martha Jones!" says Russell T Davies. "She's 23, a medical student and her family's going into meltdown…
…When we introduced Rose [in 2005] we were introducing a whole new audience to the concepts of Doctor Who at the same time, so sci-fi elements invaded her life gradually over her first episode. With Martha it's the opposite – she's thrown right in at the deep end and struggling to save the lives of everyone around her. I did think of calling this episode Baptism of Fire!"
2. The Shakespeare Code
"… If the word Shakespeare makes you groan, then rest assured this isn't just a history lesson. There are witch like creatures at work, strange deaths – a man drowns on dry land! – some terrible puns and a fearful plot dating back to the dawn of the universe!"
3. Gridlock
"…The TARDIS returns to the year five billion, on the planet New Earth, where the Doctor and Rose last fought off Cat-nurse nuns and zombie patients. It’s a bit like th Doctor taking Martha to places where he took his ex – which Martha soon notices! But before long, greedy pharmacists, hapless kidnappers, and terrifying beasts from below have thrown her into danger. And all because the Doctor told a lie."
4/5. Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks
"I give writers a 'shopping list' of elements, and this was the barmiest one yet: 1930s New York, Pig Men, sewers, showgirls and… oh yes, Daleks!
…Helen's done a brilliant job, combining the depression with the Dalek's desperation to survive along with a good bit of The Island of Dr Moreau, not to mention Frankenstein! Be prepared to see Daleks as you've never seen them before!"
6. The Lazarus Experiment
"Marvel comics! That's what I said to writer Stephen Greenhorn. Give us a good old mad scientist, with an experiment going wrong and an outrageous supervillain on the loose.
…Pay attention to the paymaster of Professor Lazarus as a trap plotted across time and space begins to close…"
7. 42
"The 42nd century, a spaceship in a far flung galaxy, saboteurs at work, crew members possessed and the terrifying catchphrase 'Burn with me!'"
8/9 Human Nature / The Family of Blood
"… These two episodes take the Time Lord to places he's never been before, all in the haunting setting of a boy's public school in 1913; the winter before the War with a chill in the air and mysterious lights in the sky. If you ever thought scarecrows were scary, you ain't seen nothing yet!"
10. Blink
"To be honest Doctor Who rarely scares me because I've seen it all behind the scenes. But when I watch this episode – I'm not kidding – I'm scared to death! Go on, I dare you. Close the curtains, turn the lights off and huddle round the TV. Clutch your loved ones. And shiver."
11. Utopia
"Jack's back! As John Barrowman's Captain Jack Harkness comes storming aboard the TARDIS – with an arrival like no companion has ever had before – it's time for the TARDIS' wildest ride yet!"
12/13. The Sound of Drums / Last of the Time Lords
"The season finale and the trap closes, as the Doctor, Martha and Captain Jack find themselves in a desperate fight for survival.
Who are the Toclafane? What is the power of Archangel? And what terrible secrets are stored at the of the Valiant? It's an epic and heartbreaking story, as the Doctor faces his greatest enemy yet. Now, I wonder who could that be…?"

I like the name of the first two parter (Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks). But how many "...of the Daleks" is this now? Seems like most of the Doctors have had an "...of the Daleks" story.
I propose somebody write an episode called "Repetition of the Daleks" or "PowEviDaPlaGeneDestiRessuReveRemelution of the Daleks' Masterplan" just to be cheeky.

3x01: Smith and Jones (No spoilers)
Being an opening episode, and also one which introduces the new companion, Martha Jones we couldn't hope for anything more than a traditional runaround. And, that's what we got - on the face of it.
But digging deeper you'll see what we got was the strongest introduction for an on-going character the newly reinvented series has given us to date. Martha's character jumps off the screen, and I've already warmed to her more than I did to Rose. There was elements of the Doctor "testing" Rose in "Rose" to see if she had the right material to become a companion, but here it's much more blatant with him constantly asking questions and mentally noting her replies. And, though indirectly, Martha's apparently dying actions* end up in saving the lives of every single living thing over half the planet Earth, which isn't bad for a first day!
However, the episode wasn't as funny as I expected it to be. There was scope for more humour with the Jadoon (A sort of intergalactic police force who are similar to Hitchhikers' Guide's Vogons in their narrow-minded, bureaucratic outlook but much more aggressive), but I suppose the team were worried that satire could easily turn to parody. Still, nice that the Doctor pleased when seeing the hospital shop! (cf. New Earth) which did make me laugh the most. Ah, in-jokes for continuity obsessed fans, how we love them. (Talking of continuity, I would have loved this to have been set in Albion Hospital from Aliens of London and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances)
All in all 6.5/10 – The strongest opening episode to date.
Next Time: The Shakespeare Code
* I don't consider this a spoiler – we knew she wasn't going to die.

Keep the reviews coming 2099net!!
I live in OZ and in may be months before we get to see the new adventures! So please keep em coming! So far to wet my appetite Ive been watching runaway bride for the umpteenth time on google video! which I loved. Any other little tid bits you can reveal about Smith and Jones?
It looks like Ill have to order torchward from amazon UK. It turns out the networks have passed on the series down here which is really annoying. No sign of S.J. Smith either!
Most anticipated for me is Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks
42 sounds a little like Satan Pitt (which was almost like a Stephen King)
episode 12 and 13 sound very promising though they havnt given much away about it.

OK, I believe Torchwood has been picked up by an Australian channel now, but its not ABC! Torchwood is variable quality at best, but it does improve as the series goes on - I think They Keep Killing Suzie is just as good as anything from Buffy, Angel or other American Sci-Fi series. And the final two episodes have great promise, even if they don't quite live up to it.
Tidbits about Smith and Jones:
You've probably guessed this from the write-up I did earlier, but Martha shows she's capable of holding her own and working a few things out without the Doctor. I do think Martha is a more interesting character than Rose (who I always thought was a bit too "clingy").
The sonic screwdriver is destroyed.
One of the characters in Smith and Jones actually says "Burn with me!" (see "42") so this could be another through-thread for the series. Mr Saxon is referenced both visually on "Vote Saxon" posters and aurally too. We now know what Mr Saxon's upcoming political campaign is based around...
We see a lot of Martha's family at the beginning and end of the episode. I'm not sure where things are going exactly, but internet rumour is to watch our for how Martha's sister's career develops... My guess is she may end up working for Mr Saxon in some capacity (there's no evidence on screen that I noticed, but I have read she is in PR).
