Okay- so matted is basically making a fullscreen movie widescreen. I get it now...so, animation is lost, but not much, right? I remember the boxes and comparisons on the Matted thread...

Well, I really don't know that much about how much picture is lost, but I do know that the picture lost was never theatrically supposed to be seen.

So, is it "better" to have the matted, since more artwork is shown, or the fullscreen, since there is less "clutter" on screen? My thoughts are that I like more artwork, but it may take away from what's going on...?

Your welcome, and I'm glad you understand it. Well, can you define "better"? Since they are pretty much equal in viewing status, it really doesn't matter which one you view. The matted version really won't take away anything since the film w made knowing that it would be matted.

So, it really doesn't matter which way it is...so, for example, I have the Gold Collection version of "Robin Hood"...it really doesn't matter if I upgrade to the "Most Wanted" edition (which I've been debating), since the picture is practically the same, right?

Actually, the Most Wanted Edition uses the exact same picture from the Gold Collection, except that it has been matted. It really depends whether or not you want a matted version. If you would perfer the original aspect ratio, then stick with your Gold Collection DVD. If you would like the matted version, go and buy the new Most Wanted Edition. Since I have the Most Wanted Edition, I would like to get the Gold Collection DVD so that I could have the original and matted version, and make myself a double-disc "Robin Hood" feature. So, do whatever you think you would like best.

Actually, no. The MWE has darker, deeper colors than the GC. Luke posted a comparison in his review:

The newer disc has more natural colors and is probably closer to what was inked. Still, there's not a huge difference between the two.

I am a HUGE HUGE fan of 101 Dalmatians. It is my second favorite film of all time (first being Sleeping Beauty). When I read this news I began to cry. You don't understand how happy I am to finally get confirmation of 101 Dalmatians Platinum Edition. I can hardly contain my joy. Thank you so much Luke for posting this on the front page!!!!

I agree totally with what Sequel said. blackcauldron85, it really is up to you which version to get. There are many people here on this board that will prefer almost any film in widescreen if the choice was given to them. If you are like one of those people, I would get the MWE of Robin Hood. Or if you're someone like me who likes seeing the entire picture despite being fullscreen, stick with your GC. (That's what I did anyway). Yes, maybe the "cut" parts of the screen that allow it to become widescreen aren't really meant to be seen, but I personally like seeing the whole entire picture. Sometimes when you compare a fullscreen screencap to a widescreen (matted) screencap of the same film and image, the animation can get cut off such as a dog's toes, or even something like a bird's entire head. (I know that that's fairly vauge, but you get the idea.

)

But, once again, when/if I get proof that Disney's going to release Jungle Book in matted widescreen, I'm going out on a search for the LI. Jungle Book is one of my top 4 all-time favorite Disney Classics, and I really don't want Disney to ruin it.

On a side note, I'm sorry that it took me so long to reply to you, blackcauldron! I was at a rehearsal for our High School musical, Sound of Music...

Thanks so much, Disneykid, TheSequelofDisney, and brotherbear! And, no worries, brotherbear- I myself didn't respond until just now (I was busy Fri. and Sat. night)!

If the Disney Movie Club gets a good deal, I'll buy the new versions of both "Robin Hood" and "Dumbo", but, until then, I'll stick with the ones I have. I mean, I'll keep the old ones regardless, but I may get the new ones, too.

That's not true. The Adventures of Robin Hood and Casablanca are already available on HD-DVD, and they're presented in their intended 4x3 ratio, no matting whatsoever.

Was just going to post this. I'm sure eventually if HDTVs and these HD formats do take over completely we will see new "Fullscreen" DVDs that fill Widescreen sets.

However I really wish people could just live with OAR. Stretching, or cropping a film just to make it fit a TV must be stopped.

Anyway good news on 101 Dalmatians. I look forward to finally picking this up on DVD.

wow my bad, i didnt pick up the casablanca hddvd since i was happy with the 2 disc special edition on dvd.
so i didnt realize that it was in fact released in the academy aspect ratio on HDDVD. iam glad to hear that i also believe that movies should be viewed in there Original Aspect ratio that they were seen in the theatre, be it scope flat or Academy, Especially since iam not watching my movies on a tv but rather via my Toshiba DLP Projector

101 Dalmatians is my favorite Disney film (alongside Sleeping Beauty) I have been a fan of the film since I was a child. My favorite Disney character, on par with Princess Aurora, is Cruella De Vil (yes I like her more than Maleficent). The film has a special place in my heart; I’m the films biggest fan. I can't wait until the Platinum Edition is released in March. It's the only PE I really want.

Does anyone else find it odd that we have heard no news about this release...it's less than 6 months away. No cover art, no tech specs, no bonus features, no website, no pre-order, and no commercial on The Jungle Book PE. I find this very odd.

I am really excited about the release of 101 Dalmatians on DVD. I've been waiting for a long time, seeming how it was initially supposed to be the Platinum Edition release for this past February, but then Peter Pan ended up taking that spot. 101 Dalmatians is such a great film, with one of my favorite Disney villainess'. I'm hoping the website will be up and running rather shortly, but we'll see. I remember the Peter Pan website was up and running shortly after the release of The Little Mermaid. It will be so nice for 101 Dalmatians to finally get a 2-disc release, let's just hope it is filled to the brim with great bonus feature, unlike some of the more lack luster Platinums we have seen lately.

Along with the Pinocchio PE, 101 Dalmatians is the DVD I'm looking forward to the most. I hope we get a commentary, and a long documentary, at least, with input from John Canemaker, John Culhane, and the animators/artists through archive footage; maybe even interview Robin Allan and Amid Amidi. As it's quite a popular film with the general public I hope they don't take the easy route and stick a lot of games on it.
