It's actually a mix between both Cinderella Castle and Sleeping Beauty, but more obviously leaning towards the former. It's not an exact CG replica of Cinderella Castle because I noticed the way the turrets and bridges were designed seemed more in line with Sleeping Beauty's. I need to watch it again to be sure, though.
Oh, and from what I understand, this is definitely replacing both the blue and orange/black logos. I have no idea, though, if it's also replacing the one designed for Pixar films. Since this new one is CG (and strikingly detailed CG, at that), I'm guessing it would be attached to future Pixar films, too.

It looked more like Sleeping Beauty's castle to me, though perhaps with Cinderella's top turret.

Yeah, the new logo is awesome, they should put it up for a download. If anyone knows where we can see the logo again online let us know. I'd like to see a poster made of the new logo, it is really a beautiful image. Also, off topic here, but when I saw Leroy & Stitch and they show all the cousins assembled together for the first time, I thought that would make an awesome poster as well.

I have to say that I was very impressed by the new logo.
It simultaneously manages to capture all thay history of Disney - with the films, the parks and other enterprises - while making its mark for the future.
However, I will agree with drnilescrane on another point: it will be difficult to alter for specific films, and I liked the way the simplicity of the former logo could be changed dramatically for various films.

Hey. I found a link with a photo of the castle in the new logo on Hollywood Reporters Website.

I'm not quite sure how to post the picture in a message, so if someone else can figure that out that might be easier. Enjoy.

Here's the image from Hollywood Reporter...

I must say, it's very impressive. I still have yet to see POTC:DMC, so I can't fully judge it, but if it's that spectacular in a still image, can't wait to see it in full motion...

I love this. Love it.
I wish Disney would release the logo animation online in a downloadable QuickTime file such as they do with trailers. I want to watch it over and over and see all the refrences. And I want an MP3 of that score, too. Wow.

Thanks for putting your avatar of the new logo. I have the retired logo from the 80's, the old Walt Disney Pictures logo with the 2D animated blue background with a light blue striped castle. I wanna see the new logo in two weeks. I haven't seen it yet, but I'll try. But don't expect to put the new logo on "The Little Mermaid" Platinum Edition DVD. "The Little Mermaid" has the retired blue logo but it will appear on DVD this fall. The new logo will always be the future for Disney films and direct-to-video movies including the upcoming "Tinkerbell" with Britanny Murphy and "Cinderella 3".Jake Lipson wrote:I love this. Love it.

It's interesting to note that the font for 'Pictures' has changed to Times New Roman (The Walt Disney Company Corporate font that is supposed to be on every word apart from the text 'Walt Disney')... Especaily when they went ahead and botched the new logo for 'Disney Parks' by using the Walt Disney Script for the word 'Parks' - Talk about consistant branding.

To see what the logos was originally done in the past, here's what answers.com has to say:
Until 1985, Disney theatrical films did not feature a studio logo. (From 1953-1981, though, there was a title card reading "Distributed by Buena Vista Film Distribution" or variants. Before 1953, Disney films were distributed by RKO Radio Pictures.) The "Buena Vista Distrubution" was also seen in "(Paul Bunyan)".

In 1985, Walt Disney Pictures was formed, and with it came Disney's first onscreen logo. Against a blue background, a stylized castle appears, with the text "Walt Disney Pictures" underneath, with "When You Wish upon a Star" playing. (Pixar films use a version with a 3-D CGI castle.) The footage was seen from "Muppet Treasure Island" (1996), & "Sleeping Beauty" (1959).

As of right now, the new logo is here with just the 3D animated open. According to the Hollywood Reporter on the new logo:
In just 30 seconds, Disney's digitally revamped curtain-raiser travels
from a star high above the clouds to reveal a jewel-colored landscape
at dusk. The animated camera glides over a glistening lake to arrive
at a glowing Disney castle where the studio's classic logo is spelled
out in a silvery new 3-D typeface.
The pic of the new logo is in a couple of posts. Thanks to Escapay.
