I think I'm going to get this because this is one of the few Disney movies I've never seen in its entirety before and I don't want the Gold Collection one. I wonder how long "Passing The Baton" will be. It sounds awesome to me. Also, that sucks for Treasure owners with the bonus shorts we're getting.

There's another "Music and More" bonus feature:

Sigh. At least he has a good voice and this will help sell more Fox and the Hound DVDs to the tweenage audience. I guess Newsweek is implying that the VHS won't get the music video...or, are they still making VHS anymore?

I agree, Lucas does have a good voice. I wonder which song it will be? I'm pretty sure that it wouldn't be "Lack of Education", maybe it will be "Best of Friends" (my favorite song from the movie)?

It'll likely be "Best of Friends", since "Lack of Education" isn't much of a song to make a music video out of. Plus, BoF is the best known of the five F&H songs.

Anyways, I initially was going to pass on this, since I wouldn't need the new games or the shorts, but dammit, they just had to include a Backstage Disney segment that just might be worth a double dip. Still, I'm holding on to the GC edition, simply for its 1988 re-release trailer (the things I do for a trailer, honestly...). Plus, I like the GC cover art slightly better.

Wasn't the 'Passing the Baton' featurette and the art gallery on the Gold collection DVD? Because both of those were on the 2001 UK release DVD.

The featurette was nothing special it was about 10 mins long and was a composite of material recorded in the 1980s around the films original release.

Our F&H came out in 2000, back when Gold Collection merely meant storybooks and singalongs, so sadly no, ours didn't come with a featurette or art gallery.

What remains is the reason I'll be picking this up the day it's released.

At first, I got the impression that the "Passing the Baton" featurette was about the sequel, seeing as how that's what the title implies, but then I remembered that this was the first one that the new generation of animators worked on, so now I'm happy about the featurette. Sure, it's only 10 minutes long, but it's ten minutes longer than what we got on the GC DVD, and it's as much as we're ever going to get for an unpopular film like The Fox & the Hound.

Also, w00t for the art gallery. Ichabod, since you knew the length of the featurette, can you tell us how many images are in it?

The menu's okay. It's nothing new, but it lives up to my expectations.

I'm glad to see we're at least getting some kind of featurette and gallery. Since this isn't one of my favorite Disney movies, those two little features (along with the rest of the fluff filling up the disc) is enough for me. I still feel bad for the big fans of this film, though, since this certainly isn't enough for them. I'm willing to bet Robin Hood will be almost identical to this in terms of content: a vintage featurette, gallery, music video, sing-along, storybook, set-top game, and a short or two. Hopefully the 2-Disc, non-Platinum SEs aren't dead, yet, since we still have Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Hunchback, Hercules, and Lilo & Stitch on the horizon.

But you're right about what Robin Hood will most likely get. I'll be surprised if we even get a featurette at all. I'm still baffled as to why Disney's re-releasing it in the first place. I mean, who still talks about Robin Hood? WE don't even talk about Robin Hood, and we're UD members.

Yeah along with Peter Pan, but since Peter Pan is being billed as a "Special Edition" and being released early next year outside of the regular Platinum schedule, I'm a little worried that it may not be a 2-Disc set. Disney in the past few years has released non-Platinum 2-discers to support Platinum titles (Sleeping Beauty/The Lion King, Aladdin/Mulan, Bambi/Pocahontas). But for Cinderella, we instead got two single disc affairs for Tarzan and The Emperor's New Groove, a single disc Dumbo for Lady and the Tramp, and single discs for Fox and the Hound and Robin Hood for The Little Mermaid. I still have some faith, though, that Disney will consider Peter Pan and Pinocchio big and important enough for extensive treatment whether they be Platinum or not, but I'm not holding my breath for a commentary on Pinocchio.

Would Dumbo really count for Lady and the Tramp, though? It did come four months later instead of the usual week or two weeks later.

If anything, I would've thought Bambi II was the companion for Lady and the Tramp, even if it was a sequel and came a few weeks earlier.

By the looks of the "small" bonus features, this will probably be only 1 disc. It's a shame that Disney doesn't know that tons of people love this movie, and that it deserves a better DVD treatment than what Disney is giving us.

Actually my bad, the Passing the Baton featurette appears to have been filmed around 2000 ( not sure why I thought it used footage from the 80s

). It features a few faces such as Frank Thomas, Glen Keane etc bascially just explaining about how there was a change over in the animation staff during the production of FatH from the older animators to the newer ones. Unfortunately it looks like I remembered it being a bit longer than it actually was! It's just over 6 minutes in length.

It shows a tiny bit of behind the scenes stuff such as a couple of rough sketches, and a bit of footage of Pearl Bailey being sketched as she sings "Best of Friends".

As for the gallery it has about 40-50 images, a couple of early sketches, character designs, but most photos are of the animators and voice cast, the recording of the soundtrack, the disneyland tie in attractions, the covers of books and records and live action reference material.

With the lack of bonus features and the possibility of only being a one disc I think I'm going to just keep my Gold Collection. Unless, of course, the improvement on the animation deserves an upgrade.

Well, I'm not sure about TF&TH, but I remember Edgar Rice Burroughs went to Walt and suggested the idea of making an animated version of Tarzan after seeing "Snow White".
