Lars Vermundsberget wrote:Sure, a little bit of info is useful. But first and foremost I still don't "know" the Swamp Fox, Elfego Baca and Spin & Marty in the sense that I "know and love" them - I've never seen them before and cannot say for sure if there's reason for me to really, really want them. But I'll still buy... :)
What I don't like about the Swamp Fox/Elfego Baca set is that it's not really complete in any way and just has selected episodes from each show. I know that they can't include the all eps of even just one in a 2 disc set, but the fact that it's a "best of" of sorts and not a "complete" in any form is kinda a let down for the treasures.

I guess I'll have to agree with you there. The Mickey Mouse Club set included the complete first week of the show and that seemed somewhat in keeping with the Treasures line. As long as the SF and EB selections are episodes that stand alone I guess it won't be too bad, though. I don't expect this set to be among the greatest and most essential ones, but it could still be worthwhile. Those responsible probably figured that this was no Davy Crockett, so just a few "samples" would be all right - maybe a reasonable decision. Admittedly, I'll buy these just because they're "Treasures".

Tin

Post by Owlzindabarn »

Quite right--it's a big shame that all of Elfego Baca is not included; surely we're not being led to believe that there will be a second tin of him? I reallllly doubt it. Most people don't even remember him.

They really should do a "Wonderful World of Color" tin series, which includes the best of Walt's made-for-tv movies. I know a lot of them have already made it to dvd, but there's this 40 year library of other gems to see. I guess they'd only put about 2 movies in such a tin, making it sort of unworthy, but where does it say that the Treasures can only be 2 disk sets? Why not 3 or more? I notice a banner ad for "Desperate Housewives" at the top of this page today. I paid about $30 for my DH set and it had SIX disks. I usually pay about $30 for a new tin set, so they can surely put more disks into a special set, maybe charge a little more for it if they wanted.

Ah, well, this is probably the most unexciting wave of the 5, (to me, anyway). I want Donald, surely, but'cha know, half of the stuff in the "Rareties" tin has already been released, one way or another. Spin & Marty were cool, but I don't want them. Elfego & Swamp Fox are also cool, but no way am I gonna touch that tin, since we know it to be incomplete.

Fellow UDers, I bring you news from sir Leonard of Maltin.

A few weeks ago I emailed him and asked him 3 questions.

1. Was the omission of "Susie the Little Blue Coupe" and "Casey Bats Again" a typo in the press release as was the situation with Donald V2.

2. Would the remaining episodes of "The Swamp Fox" or "Elfego Baca" see the light of day of further episodes.

and 3. Will the True Life Adventures rear their ugly heads any time soon.

I had completely forgotten all about this as it was some weeks ago, so to get a response was out of the blue, and this is what he said.
Hi...

CASEY BATS AGAIN and SUSIE THE LITTLE BLUE COUPE are being saved for inclusion on another disc down the road.

And yes, we all felt it would be better to pair two of the Disney "heroes" series together rather than putting all our eggs in one basket, so to speak. If these do well, we will be able to release more; if they don't, that may be the end of the line for those series.

The latest word I have is that they're now planning to release the True-Life Adventures as a separate series and not as part of the Treasures.

I hope this clears a few things up for you. We do have a commitment for another four DVDs next year, so there are more goodies to come.

cheers,

Leonard Maltin
So we know that 2006 will give us another 4 treasures at least, also there is a chance the other episodes not included on the Heroes tin could possibly see the light of day. Quite sad that the True Life Adventures won't be a Treasure however, at least he suggests that Disney are at least contemplating a release, and if they do get their own series that would be even better.

I wonder what that one could be. Aren't those the only "special" cartoons not included on the Rarities set? Any Ideas?

Notice Leonard said those two would be on "another disc." He didn't identify the disc as being part of the Treasures line -- maybe they will be part of the "Classic Cartoon Favorites" collection.

Well, who knows, but I wouldn't really think so. Including them in the CCF is no reason not to include them in the Treasures.

I must say I'm a bit puzzled... But I guess a second Rarities set could include, together with Casey and Susie, another handful of "Alice Comedies" and the Figaro and Chip and Dale shorts. Then there are the various shorts from the 70s and after. Maybe that would do it. I haven't checked thoroughly whether there would be any bits and pieces left from the late 50s and 60s, but some of you might have mentioned already that there aren't...?

But Leonard is only involved in the Treasures, and I think he does imply it will be a Treasures Set. I doubt very highly that Leonard would know anything about the CCFs and their contents.

I'm kinda glad True Life Adventures won't be part of the treasures. That would have been the final straw that gets me off from getting "all" treasures.

Mr . Toad -

A few of these titles might seem slightly "questionable" - IMO not very likely to be included in a "Disney" set, such as "Vincent" and the Roger Rabbit shorts. At least I don't think they quite belong there.

Isn't "Bubble Bee" a Pluto title?

And why not include the one DD piece on your list in the final DD set?

And as you said, a lot of the Alice films no longer exist.

Bottom line, though: There IS easily enough material for another "Rarities" set. :)

I guess we can trust our friend Leonard to do the right thing and make a wise selection.

Lars - just cut and paste from an excel file and some do not belong.

Bubble Bee is not on the list because my list is just by title card. Following Treasure logic, Title Cards do not matter as much as content so yes a couple will be included on other sets. However, you never know as the three Goofy cartoons without Goofy title cards were not included on his set. There are others like A Dairy Tale that obviously do not need remastering and Treasures issuance.

So unless you combined the lest overs with maybe some live action shorts or Peoples and Places there probably is not enough left to support an individual treasure.

The Complete Goofy was probably so packed that more or less peripheral material was avoided.

Not sure I follow... Your list seems to suggest that there is enough.

Yeah, but if I'm not mistaken, there hasn't been a Treasure yet to feature material created after Walt died.

Lars - I was not suggesting that every cartoon there belonged on a Treasure. That was just my list of shorts that do not have a title card where they would go on another set and which have not already been issued. So that is the possible material to draw from. You had asked if there was anything else that we had not mentioned.

You're mistaken; Mickey Mouse in Living Colour Vol 2 had some of the 80s and 90s featurettes on, a good 20-30 years after Walt died.

Missed - Ichabod's initial conversation with Leonard.

I too am a little upset that the TLA will not be on Treasures. Would be nice if they did all the shorts that way. However, as long as they do a nice remastering job that is all that really matters.

In addition to the figarao and chip and dale shorts, and the roger rabbit shorts, and casey bats again and suzie little blue copu more recent "rarities" might include stuff like john henry, destino, lorenzo, redux riding hood, I'm sure there are a few more.
