When can we expect a new edition for Hercules and Hunchback?
I think these 2 in particular deserve a 2 disc edition... and of course the most important thing a better video and audio presentation.

See, I thought Hunchback's transfer was pretty good. However, I am not as picky as some people are about that. I also thought it got a decent release with a commentary and making of. I would LOVE a 2-disc release, but it is not a huge priority. I think Herculees needs a better release badly. Not only did that transfer suck, but the special features were severely lacking. I am not saying it needs to be a Masterpiece Collection or anything, I just want good picture and sound quality and a few special features. Especially a commentary. I figure if they can do it for Mulan, they can do it for Herculees.
I expect Hunchback to have exactly the same stuff that was on the laserdisc, which was:
* Audio Commentary with the Directors and Producer
* "The Making of The Hunchback of Notre Dame"
* History and Background of Notre Dame de Paris
* History of the Production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame
* Early Presentation Reel
* Character Design: Quasimodo
* Character Design: Esmeralda
* Character Design: Frollo
* Character Design: Phoebus
* Character Design: Clopin
* Character Design: The Gargoyles
* Character Design: Archdeacon
* Character Design: Djali
* Character Design: Miscellaneous Townspeople and Gypsies
* Story Reel: Prologue - "The Bells of Notre Dame"
* Story Reel: "Heaven's Light/Hellfire"
* Deleted Song: "Someday" With Optional Commentary
* Deleted Song: "In A Place of Miracles" With Optional Commentary
* Deleted Song: "As Long As There's A Moon" With Optional Commentary
* Workbook and Scene Planning
* Art Design, Layouts, and Backgrounds
* Computer Generated Imagery
* Multi-Language Clip Reel
* Publicity
* Trailers
The only new stuff I expect to be on the 2-Disc are kiddie games, since Disney would be too lazy to dig further than the (already comprehensive) laserdisc for more stuff. They've so far done it with Snow White, Fantasia, Alice in Wonderland, and Sleeping Beauty, and it seems they're doing this with Pocahontas, too, so it's safe to bet the same will happen with Hunchback. Odd that the "Someday" music video isn't listed here. I also wonder if there are any other deleted scenes that aren't songs. Either way, I hope we get this ASAP (2006 seems pretty likely since Disney will have their hands full next year with Bambi, Cinderella, Pocahontas, Lilo, and possibly Tarzan and Dumbo).
As for Hercules, anything's possible. I have no clue if documentaries and featurettes were made for a potential laserdisc release that got cancelled, or what. Disney could surprise us and make newly produced material like they did with Mulan.

Wao, I didn't expect these 2 movies to be so unpopular...
So, if Hunchback LD had all those features, why they never made it to an special edition DVD?.... Well, we all know the answer: it's Disney.
And goofystitch you're right in saying the movie doesn't look THAT bad. That's the problem... the "that". It is a clean print but still VHS quality.
As for Hercules, I think it's one of the best from Disney (90's era) and altough of course it has nothing to do with the real myth... it is still a very good movie by itself. And as such it deserves a better edition.

I love both films and would be ecstatic if a 2-disc set was released of each. And as I look at my collection and rule out films which are set to be platinum and have Masterpiece Editions in the works, I guess these two films would be my next pick for re-releases with lots of extras. I would also love a better release of "Home on the Range." I mean features wise. I thought it was a great transfer. Just lacking in bonus material. Does anybody know how it has done so far on DVD sales wise? I would also like to see uncut releases of "Melody Time" and "Saludos Amigos." And I would love for Disney to remaster "Robin Hood" and "The Black Cauldron" because I like both films a lot and am unsatisfied with their transfers. Same with "Aristocats" and "Sword in the Stone" now that I think about it. Basically, Disney should just clean up all of their animated movies to the best of their abilities. Seems like they did some mediocre work and now should give us the good stuff. lol.

Well, to be honest and as established in the review The Black Cauldron is the least favorite of Disney all. So we all should be thankful it got released and the transfer it got. That one is actually quite clean: just look at the trailer. So I don't think it would be released ever again.
And of all the remaining titles, Hunchback and Hercules would be in my opinion the last really good movies remaining deserving of better DVDs.

I would love to see better editions released too especially Hercules. I love that movie even if I haven't seen it in a while.
So from what I have heard here and other places is that the 'hunchback of Notre Dame' DVD is pretty good for a single disc release. I might pick it up. It's one of those DVDs you can find anywhere and I just have been going for the harder to get DVDs recently.

I think Huncback is loooong over do for some recognition. It was Disneys most daring and well written piece, but scared families because it was so grown-up. Instead of being applauded for this, people complained. I personally think is sickening that people can't handle children seeing anything with a little realism in in. But anyway, I really hope to see this film get a Special Edition, ( it deserves a platinum) and I'd love to see the stage musical brought to America. As for "Hercules", cant' stand it. But it should get something better, I guess. It maid money.

The screenplay was marred by those gargoyles. I don't understand it. If Disney wanted to go all-out serious, they should have axed the sidekicks. Esmerelda and Pheobus just promoted the stereotype that it's what's on the outside that really counts.DARTH KNITE wrote:I think Huncback is loooong over do for some recognition. Hunchback of Notre Dame SE?
I want to appologize in advance if this has been covered before.
Is there a chance that Disney will release a 2 disk 10th anniversary edition next year? I really want this movie as a part of my collection but the current DVD offered doesn't seem too exciting.
Does anyone know what the chances are of a re-release? And if there is a Special Edition release, what would you like to see included?

I've been putting off getting Hunchback for a really long time now but I think I'll just go get it.
If a 2-disc set is released (the chance seems very likely but Disney tends to be... unpredictable), the same audio commentary may not be included (and I really want to hear the audio commentary!) so I might as well.
Yes, I'm half-half trying to make a reason for buying it now that isn't the fact that I lack self-control.
[EDIT: Omg, typo heaven. THREE TIMES.]

Key, I'm kinda in the same situation you are. I can't control myself, I must have this movie to myself, NOW!
It truely is an underrated masterpiece and it deserves a place in my collection! I think it's just one of those films that really need to grow on you to fully appreciate them. One of Disney's better attempts at being more 'grown-up'.

Like many, I think Disney is going to release Hunchback in 2006 in a 10th Anniversary Edition using laserdisc materials; they've done it with Pocahontas, so it seems even more likely with Hunchback, which is regarded by many as the better movie.
Even though I've never really dug Hercules, I feel it does deserve a 2 Disc Special Edition. I wouldn't pick up the current bland edition considering its quality and my lack of enthusiasm towards the movie, so a 2 Discer is the only way you're gonna make me buy, baby! Plus, if Mulan got a decent 2 Discer with no laser backup, I can't see why Hercules won't, as its the only other major 90s film not to receive a proper collector's edition on any format.
As for The Rescuers Down Under, does anybody think that they should do a special edition combining that and the original Rescuers movie? As in a 3 Disc Set like The Fantasia Anthology or The Ultimate Toy Story Box? Seeing how those films are generally regarded as the worst Disney has to offer, I doubt it, but it's just an idea.

That's a good idea but I doubt it. Basically because of the great difference between the two and that Disney already didn't put too much effort in The Rescuers DVD.

Going back to my post. Any news regarding these Special Editions for Hercules and Hunchback?
PS
I truly believe Hunchback would have been an outstanding success if Disney decided on taking out the gargoyles

Well, Peter Pan and Return to Never Land got a 3 disc Anthology release in Japan! So it could happen.Evil Genie Jafar wrote:That's a good idea but I doubt it. Basically because of the great difference between the two and that Disney already didn't put too much effort in The Rescuers DVD.

Well, the announcment of the Jungle Book: 40th Anniversary motivated me to consider what other films will be celebrating an anniversary this year because Disney certainly likes releasing anniversary editions--especially of their animated classics. Well, I decided to puruse the wonderful list of animated classics here at the website when I rediscovered this year is the anniversary of Hercules which is in particular need of re-release because the current DVD in a nonanimorphic transfer. I jumped over to disneydvd.com and guess what I discovered?
Hercules has gone out of print! Well, more specifically, it has vanished from the disneydvd.com database. Usually this means a new addition is coming. So now I believe I have reintroduced wild speculation and desperate pleas for a 2-Disc special edition to UD. Luke is going to ban me for sure!
Edit: Upon further investigation, I discovered you can still purchase Hercules from disneyshopping.com. I also called Disney and they told me the title was still available. I still think it is noteworthy that the title (in the DVD format) vanished from the disneydvd.com database.
