I've only seen this movie 1 1/2 times. The first time was when we rented it in December 1997 as it had just come out on video. The second time was only half a viewing. I caught it on the Disney Channel last year at my cousin's house but I only saw the first half of it. I do want to see it again, but I've noticed that the video shop only has the video up for rental. I'm trying not to watch videos anymore, so I don't want to rent that. I have a number of questions about the DVD:

1. Is the movie itself any good as I can hardly remember?

2. I've noticed that the UK releases skip a few US extras on some releases (Bedknobs and Broomsticks anyone?). Has Oliver and Company suffered a similar fate?

3. Where's the best place to buy the DVD(reasonable price, good quality)?

The only thing oliver and company missing is the cartoon Lend a paw (which of course will be on Mickey Mous ein B+W, if you are getting it) however this was added to the US release. We actually got Oliver and Company about a year before the US.

I have only seen a few minutes of this movie when I was little, and I really want to see it! I like the story of Oliver Twist (and played the role of Oliver in the musical when I was 12) and Oliver & Company was released on the year I was born, so I want to see it for two big reasons. Why I haven't yet, I have no idea. Hmm...

I haven't seen it in a very long time, but I remember liking it. I think this movie doesn't get too much recognition since it was released prior to the 4 masterpieces. I hope we will see an SE soon so I can rewatch it.

I think it's fair to say that this film is quite far from a Disney masterpiece (in the true, not marketing, sense of the word). That doesn't necessarily mean that it's not worthwhile having, though.

I agree, this a really fun movie(and Im hoping to get the DVD for Christmas)

Well seeing as how the original release was labelled "Special Edition", it would surely have to be a "Masterpiece Edition" or a "20th Anniversary Edition" or a "Super Genius Edition"!

Anyway, <i>Oliver & Company</i> is one of my favorite Disney films. I only caught it for the first time when it came out on DVD, but it quickly grew on me, and I love its take on Dickens' tale.

I don't expect it will get better DVD treatment anytime soon, but it wasn't treated too poorly to begin with.

This is a warm movie. I have seen it few times in these fast few weeks. First, it aired in television here in Finland. Then, my friend's children wanted to see it (my DVD-version). I think the movie way too short and fast, like all the Disney films are, I suppose...

I saw it when it came out in the theatres in 1988 (I was 9 years old). I remember liking it, but I can't remember the movie too well. I would like to go back and watch it again. I do like the Billy Joel song from the soundtrack, though. (<i>Why Should I Worry?</i>)...

hahaha, I remember bits of this movie at 5 and I wanted them to release it on video so bad. In fact I would watch the previews for Oliver & Company on my other Disney tapes over and over again. I even wrote to Buena Vista (when I was like in elementary school) to get them to rerelease it. So imagine me jumping for joy when it finally returned to theaters in 96! Now I could actually see and remember it! Of course it wasnt spectacular. I would call it a fun film, which I agree was overlooked by the other films that became significant to the Disney Renaissance.

It strange though, does anyone know why it didnt get a VHS release after the first theatrical run (like in 89)? I remember the Sing Along Songs video (I believe it was one of the more popular volumes at the time) That's been tugging at my brain for quite a while.

But yeah, calling a low quality DVD like that a Special Edition? How insulting!

Oliver & Company is one of the most fun Disney movies to watch, and that "Why Should I Worry" song is absitively posilutely fantastic! While the '80s vibe may make it seem dated to some, I actually like it better that way - it adds a very upbeat nostalgia to it that I like a lot.

Plus it was one of the only Disney animated films made with a contemporary setting. I guess Lilo & Stitch and The Rescuers movies qualify as well.

Oliver and Company wasn't that good or that cheap but I thought it was ok and the music "Why Should I Worry" was a awesome song.
I thought it was great that Oliver and Company got Speical Edition but it should have gotten a 2 Disc set also.

actually 101 dalmatians was disney's first animated film with a contemporary setting. olivers look was actually inspired by this film.

I love the 80's feel! it had Ruth pointer from the pointer sisters! and bette midler, who was making alot of films for disney at that time.

i bought the soundtrack in august 2001 and listened to it constantly around the time on spetember 11th, of cousre oliver & company takes place in new york, so this soundtrack will always remind me on that day now. plus the CD's booklet features the world trade center on every other page. so its extra special to me now.

I also think it is worthy to note that at the time this film was a surprising success! I think if memory serves me well it has a US domestic box office gross of somewhere in the region of $80,000,000. which ain't bad! I think it also truthful to say that this film help helped to fuel disney's renaissance!

Agreed - at that point Disney animation was not quite "there" yet, but definitely on its way up!

Oliver and company made $53,279,055 at the Box Offic back in 1988. If we add to that, the money made during the theatrical re-release, it would be about $74 million, wich ain't bad. If we adjust it to current US dollars, I think it would be considered a huge hit.
