AFI's 100 Years........100 Quotes

Gee, I think the good ole' American Film Institute is beginning to run out of steam with their conversation-sparking countdowns...

As usual, folks will be voting from a pre-selected list (400 in total) of quotes, and the selections are skewed to films of the past. Plenty of quotes from <i>The Godfather</i>, <i>Wizard of Oz</i>, <i>Gone with the Wind</i>, and <i>Casablanca</i>. Three from <i>Jerry Maguire</i>. And with all the great Ian Malcolm ones we offered in the "Toy Story 3" thread, they go with something kind of lame.

There are a few good lines that I see among the list, but I think it'd be silly for me to share with you such a trivial thing.

Okay, I'll just share a few that probably won't make the cut but I like.

"Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads."
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning." (Actually, this may well make it.)
"You'll shoot your eye out."
"Yippie-ki-yay, (Mr. Falcon)!"
"We came. We saw. We kicked its ass."
"Funny like I'm a clown? I amuse you?"
"Wax-on, wax-off."
"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!" (Nice, but no "Inconceivable!"? The ghost of Wallace Shawn will not be happy.)
"Hoo-ah!"
"Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime."
And of course, Bill/Ted's "Excellent!"

I suppose the lines from Ferris and Colonel Jessup have been repeated enough but they're still good. I was pleased to see our own MickeyMousePal's "Toga! Toga!" nominated. And Buzz (Lightyear, not McAllister) as well.

Though they do seem to be running out of ideas, I think this countdown should be pretty fun. I hope Xela Ajotnap wins! Too bad Mr. Incredible wasn't nominated for great quotes like "It's showtime" and especially "Hmm."

The only thing that makes me is how they are going to format the countdown program. I mean, in the past, they have celebrities talk for a minute or two about each flick. But how much can you say about a quote? I bet it'll largely end up being celebrities doing impressions of whoever said them, and going "Yeah, the way he delivered that was great!"

Man that's a lot of quotes. I just skimmed through it cause i noticed that a lot of the quotes are from movies i've never seen. a lot of the well known quotes are on there. One quote I know will probably make the list is the "Are you talkin to me?" quote. Personally, I think that quote is annoying because everybody tries to imitate it but it doesn't work. I haven't heard one person imitate it without sounding silly.

On a Disney note about the quotes. A plethera of them are included in the movie montage at the end of the MGM Studios ride, "The Great Movie Ride." That's probably where I heard most of the quotes from, since I've only seen a handful of the movies that were listed.

I really wish the AFI would do a countdown for animation - call it "100 Years... 100 Toons" or somesuch. It'd be great to see how "the experts" rated Disney films and Warners shorts and whatnot. It'd also be interesting to see what kind of obscure titles would end up on the list...

As an aside - correct me if I'm wrong, but the AFI only nominates films of U.S. origin, right? So no foreign films are allowed on the list? 'Cause I'm wondering whether animé would be allowed on the proverbial animation countdown...

It does really seem that they're running out of ideas (I'd like to see them tackle plot twists; there's tons of potential for that one), but quotes is an interesting category, too. It sort of bugs me that they lean so heavily on older films. Don't get me wrong; I love classic cinema, but just because a movie's old doesn't make it better. Lots of 90's films have excellent quotes, but there's a lot of quotes in consideraton that I've never even heard of (or the films they came from, for that matter), and it leads me to believe it's only because they're old and are therefore "classic." I bet you anything the top 5 quotes will be from Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, The Godfather, and Star Wars. These are all great films, of course, but after so many countdowns, what shows up becomes more and more predictable. It'd be nice to see AFI take on worst movies because at least then we won't know which films they utterly despise and therefore won't be as predictable.

Well, they're supposed to only do American films, but the rules are a bit loose which lets in a number of British films. (Sometimes, it's not easy to classify films by one particular nationality, I guess.) But I think animé wouldn't make it, most likely.

I'm too lazy to install Adobe Reader right now. PLEASE tell me Scarlett's "I'll never be hungry again" speech from Gone With The Wind is there. Or at least the line "As god is my witness, I'll never be hungry again." Because that line, in my mind, blows so many other movie lines away.

I'm sure Clueless will be totally ignored, since it's not old or some artsy fartsy independent film. It has so many classic lines. "How do I know if I'm doing it sporadically?" "You guys....I've never had straight friends before." "I do NOT wear polyester hair!" "I was riding the crimson wave last week and I had to haul ass to the ladies room." "You're a virgin who can't drive."

Sorry, I watched Clueless recently and I'm always quoting it for days after seeing it.

Bumping this up for tomorrow's airing, where the winners will be "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." and "There's no place like home." Come on, it's AFI, how can the Victor Fleming 1-2 punch of 1939 not bring home the top honors? More than seven months have passed since Jack made his comment, but I'm going to echo the sentiment that this is likely to be a very shallow program with famous people simply delivering memorable film lines. But I'll watch it (eventually) and complain anyway, right?

You're most likely right, Luke. I said most likely because it's always possible that one of the top two quotes is, "Here's looking at you, Kid," from Casablanca. Either way, all three quotes will almost surely make up the top three. Even though I tend to disagree a lot with these lists, I always love watching them. There's something about seeing clips from various films back to back that entertains me, and it's fun seeing celebs reminisce about their favorite films.
