The Wizard of Oz

Post by Sulley »

It's great that Warner Brothers is releasing some of the best classics on 2-Disc DVDs, and I was wondering if The Wizard of Oz is coming from WB on a 2-Disc SE set anytime soon.

I was actually thinking about that, myself. The current Oz DVD is so jam packed, though, that the only things that can be added are the audio commentary from the laserdisc, a pop up fact track, and the ORIGINAL recording of the Jitterbug as opposed to that horrible demo they used in the deleted scenes section for no apparant reason. It would also be nice if they gave us moving images during the audio programs as opposed to having a solitary still that can burn into your screen like the current DVD.

I hate when companies do this!!

About 2 weeks ago, I got The Wizard of Oz on DVD, and I HOPE that they don't announce anything soon, or at least let me trade in my old DVD for like $10 towards the new 2-Disc one!

I already have to rebuy Vacation and Christmas Vacation (my 2 favorite movies) this year!

DAMN SPECIAL EDITIONS, from now on Im never buying a bare-bones DVD!
After many short films, she's finally getting her own....
MINNIE MOVIE

After finding that there's something there, he found something more....

Hope you haven't recently bought A Christmas Story...

In any event, I wouldn't worry too much about Wizard of Oz. It's a fantastic disc, and you shouldn't feel it essential to upgrade. On the other hand, I'm happy about these widescreen re-releases of fullscreen titles.

The only Vacation movie I bought was the original one, and I already have pre-ordered the 20th Anniversary rerelease through a good deal.

I'll have to get rid of Space Jam and get the widescreen disc out of principle. I wish I could do the same for all my Pan & Scan DVDs.

I never really liked that movie-could never watch the whole thing. I'd rather watch "Miracle on 34th Street". And I've never seen the whole thing of "It's a Wonderful Life" either. Two years ago, I watched the first part, up until the two stars start talking. Then, last year, I saw up to the part where the pharmacist hits the little boy and his ear starts bleeding. Maybe I'll see the first 40 minutes this year...

A 2-Disc Grease is coming out next year; the director confirmed it in an interview he made with DVDFile. He said he's recording a commentary for it and there'll be tons of supplements. Yay!

I also agree on 2-discs for Ben-Hur and Gone With the Wind. WB also just recently released a movie I'm quite fond of called King of Kings which is a movie on the life of Christ very much in the style of Ben-Hur; it even has the same composer for its score. I would love to see a 2-disc of this as the current features are quite shabby, but I doubt they'll ever do this.

Another good contender for a WB 2-disc is Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory which I *KNOW* Luke will agree on. The current SE is quite nice with the commentary, documentary, promotional featurette, gallery, sing alongs, and trailer, but a movie this beloved and also of this production must have so much more tidbits and archival footage than what was shown. A 2-disc would be fascinating.

To quote Yello, "Ohhhhhh yeahhhh!"

Don't see them revisiting Wonka, though, since they seemed to put a great deal of effort into the relatively recent Special Edition, which like you say, could have (and should have) been more, but if they did, I'd be thrilled. Something from as far back as Wizard of Oz (more than four years ago...gasp :)) would probably be a more likely candidate for double-disc treatment.

Other 2-disc sets I'd like to see from Warner: Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, All The President's Men, and Sleepers.

I agree with many of the candidates here: Wizard of Oz, Shawshank, Goodfellas.

One of my faves is coming out at the end of the year: Once Upon A Time in the West - I hope this is a 2-disc like the recent Once Upon a Time in America.

Would also like to see the rest of the 'dollars' films, and something like Annie Hall SE.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know how nice the single-disc Oz was. It's a good thing because I ordered it before I got a reply. I just opened another ColumbiaHouse account and I'm habing unusually extreme difficulties with customer service. But, apparently, in two weeks I'm supposed to receive my introductory shipment of Citizen Kane, Gone With The Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Sunset Boulevard, and Psycho, although I can't be sure because the shipment isn't listed on my ACCOUNT HISTORY. All it says is that I payed for something [the introductory shipment], and it doesn't make any other indication that they're sending me anything. It's EXTREMELY frustrating :angry: !!! Anyways, now that I've collected the Animated Classics, I've decided to collect AFI's top 100 American Movies (Gotta have a hobby :lol: ). I don't know if I plan on collecting all 100, but if I do, it will be much more casual than it was with Disney, where I just HAD to get them as fast as possible. I plan on buying 2-Disc Casablanca on the 5th. :)

Fear not. That's standard for Columbia House - it's weird, but it's most likely shipped.

Yeah, the Oz DVD is jam packed. Its got:

* The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Documentary Hosted by Angela Lansbury
* Excerpts from 1914 and 1925 Silent Oz Features and 1933 Oz Cartoon
* Sketches and Storyboards
* Costume and Makeup Tests
* Still Portrait Gallery
* Harold Arlen's Home Movies
* Special Effects
* Texas Contest Winners Trailer Excerpt
* Romance of Celluloid Excerpt
* Post-Production Stills
* If I Only Had A Brain Extended Dance Number
* Buddy Ebsen's If I Only Had A Heart (Stills Recreation)
* Over the Rainbow Reprise (Stills Recreation)
* Hail, Hail! The Witch is Dead Reprise (Stills Recreation)
* The Jitterbug (Stills/Home Movies Recreation)
* 1979 Interviews with Margaret Hamilton. Ray Bolger, and Jack Haley
* Still Galleries of Premieres and Acadamy Awards
* Excerpt from 1939 Cavalcade of Acadamy Awards
* Excerpts from Off to See the Wizard
* 1939 What Is Oz? Teaser Trailer
* 1949 Reissue Trailer
* 1949 "Grown Up" Reissue Trailer
* 1970 Children's Matinee Reissue Trailer
* 1998 Reissue Trailer
* Radio Broadcast Specials
* Song Demos and Outtakes
* Cast and Character Biographies and Filmographies

See how extensive it is? And to think all this is crammed on one disc and it doesn't even affect the picture quality. The radio broadcats and song demos alone take (I'm not joking) at least 2 hours to wade through. The only thing missing from this set is the audio commentary with was hosted by a film historian and occasionally had edited remarks by Judy Garland (much like how Disney did their Walt commentaries for Snow White and Fantasia). Considering all the facts there are about Oz that weren't even covered such as other deleted scenes and accidents on the set, a pop-up factoid track would be great fun, too.

I already complained and they e-mailed me telling me to contact them if I didn't receive it in two weeks. I'm satisfied.

I like outtakes and radio broadcasts, but I think song demos just take up too much time unless they have a major difference or an interesting interruption of some sort. I decided today not to listen to all the song demos on Singin' In The Rain (Great 2-Disc set I recently ordered) because they just aren't that interesting to me, mostly because of the long interludes where there's suppose to be choreography, which is, of course, absent from the demos. I'd probably enjoy it a lot more if there were video footage of the actors' recording sessions.

Supposedly, James Cameron recently began working on a new special edition DVD release of Titanic.
