Perhaps a Disney movie just hits home harder if you watch it as a kid? A lot of people here don't seem to like Aristocats, for instance, but I really think it's magical. I guess I was about eight when it came out. On the other hand, I never saw the point of The Lion King, but my kids loved it. They, incidentally, were seven and eight at the time...
That doesn't mean I don't think some of the classics are not better than others, just that the age/generation thing might be a biasing factor. As for me, I don't really dislike any of the classics (although Oliver & co is a low point) and I'm happy to say I now (got Pocahontas today!) own all available on dvd! Jiipee!
yeah! i've always been strangely attached to Robin Hood - as my first Disney movie and the Lion King as my first big-screen Disney movie ...

even today my faves are the ones from the golden era - the Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, the Lion King - I was around 5 to 8 years old when I saw all them ...

i think its because it reminds me of when i was a kid and it was so much easier as a kid huh?

... i'm no psychologist but i'm sure someone is around here :P

anyway some of these newer Disney movies don't appeal to me at all

Since we're all being honest i'll spill my views....I'm not looking to get into any arguements here. Everything I say here is simply my opinion. I do respect your opinion, so respect mine.

Movies i didn't like that much (less than 5 out of 10 stars):
Great Mouse Detective
Peter Pan
Black Cauldron
Hunchback of Notre Dame
Bambi

Movies that i liked alright (more than 5 out of 10 stars) but IMHO don't live up to their hype:
Lion King
Sleeping Beauty
Toy Story 1

If I have time later, I will give my thoughts on these films and why i chose to include them in this post. However, I work at the Disney Store and it is extremely busy since it's a few days till Christmas so I doubt I will be able to reply anytime soon.

Well, I may sound an anti-Disney git here, but I love this type of discussion. It's really bland after a while how everybody says "My favourites are
  • " on every other thread, so these threads are fairly fun!

Disney movies I disn't like...well, a lot of the Disney live action films are lame. Oh wait, we're talking about animated classics! Damn! For me, The Aristocats, The Fox and the Hound and Hercules were pretty poor.

Disney/Pixar animated features I didn't like:

- The Fox and the Hound
- The Great Mouse Detective
- Oliver & Company
- The Sword in the Stone
- Robin Hood
- Peter Pan (okay as far as I'm concerned)
- The Aristocats
- A Bug's Life
- Alice in Wonderland
- Pinnochio (too dark and mean-spirited)

Disney/Pixar classics that I think are good, but overrated:

- Beauty and the Beast
- The Lion King
- Aladdin
- Sleeping Beauty
- Toy Story

Of the Animated Classics, I haven't yet seen the following, and therefore can't comment on them:
06. Saludos Amigos
07. The Three Caballeros
08. Make Mine Music
09. Fun and Fancy Free
10. Melody Time
11. Adventures of Ichabod & Mr. Toad (I enjoy the books)
18. The Sword in the Stone (I haven't seen it enough to judge)
20. The Aristocats (I haven't really seen much of the film)
24. The Fox and the Hound (I don't recall much of this, if I have ever even seen any of it.)
25. The Black Cauldron (I love the books)
27. Oliver & Company
33. Pocahontas
39. The Emperor's New Groove
43. Brother Bear
44. Home on the Range

Of the ones I have seen, I particularly enjoy all titles from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (#22) on back to Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. I am only 34, so I didn't see any of these when they were first released, but I am sure I saw some of them at theaters with re-releases. Also, while we didn't have a TV during some of my childhood, I am fairly sure I have seen most of them on TV at some point while growing up. We owned quite a few of the Disney Storybook Records, and I would read along while the records played.

I liked the titles I have seen that came after Winnie the Pooh, but before The Little Mermaid, but I would rank them a bit below the earlier classics.

I didn't have a problem with The Little Mermaid when I was younger, but after viewing it recently, I felt that Ariel was very disobedient (even if it is for love! :P ,) with no consequences stemming from that.

I particularly enjoyed Beauty and the Beast, although I felt that Gaston's character was pretty bad, and (IMHO) a character that was designed, in part, to encourage children to dislike hunters and/or gun owners... (although, I'm not going to touch on Bambi, especially considering it was 60 years ago.)

Aladdin was another great film, but I never really saw much appeal in The Lion King, and I feel that it is highly overrated. Following the Lion King is a string of mediocre titles, culminating with the blandness that was Atlantis. Others have laid out my objections to this film, so I won't continue here.

Lilo and Stitch was a fun film, but again, I felt that Lilo was out of control, and didn't face any consequences for her behavior.

Treasure Planet would probably be at the bottom of my list, as I felt this had limited appeal to anyone but 13-year old boys, unlike the wide spectrum of audiences that have enjoyed previous films. To me, the film has almost no connection to the original source material.

I enjoy threads where I can talk crap. :P Except there's not really any animated classics I could really talk crap about. Not even The Black Cauldron. (I think I'm ont of 30 people in the whole word who actually likes it. :P )

I could live without Robin Hood. Unlike how Beauty and the Beast listed maybe 45 total seconds of animation from Sleeping Beauty and Bambi, RH seemed to lift entire sequences from The Jungle Book. That's just pure laziness, not to mention way too obvious. I mean, I didn't even know about how the end dancing scene from B&TB was lifted from SB until I heard it on the audio commentary. :X

I really have no interest in seeing Treasure Planet or Home On The Range either. I can't comment on them, but yes.

Fox and the Hound isn't my favorite either. I do like watching it occasionally, but it can get grating. All the same, I adore Copper and Big Mama, and The Best Of Friends is one of my favorite Disney songs of all time.

I'm also not a big fan of Saludos Amigos.

That's about it for me.

I'd say...

- The Black Caldron
- Treasure Planet
- Atlantis
- The Hunchback of Notre-Dame
- Hercules.

To sum up, a lot of end 80s-90s pictures.

Woah this is an old thread! Ok, the Disney movies I don't like very much are:

Bambi - I dunno, it just bores me, then it gets too sad :(

Toy Story - Technically this isn't a Disney movie, I think it was very over-rated.

Finding Nemo - Same as Toy Story. Sure I liked it when it came out, but after a while it loses its magic.

Pinocchio - Boring.

Hercules - Animation is scary. Way too much music for me.

That's all I can think of so far, there are some other ones, but these are the ones that I hate sitting through.

I love Sword In The Stone and The Emperor's New Groove, they're very funny :P And The Black Cauldron is not that bad, but my 10 year old sister had nightmares about The Horned King...

Mulan

Call me a biased b****, but I felt the non-human supporting cast (Mushu, Cri-Kee) was totally uncalled for. The singing parts really sucked, as well.
I'm sorry you feel that way. To me, Mulan is one of Disneys finest animated movies. And if you think the non-human supporting cast was uncalled for, try reading the original poem the movie is based off of, Dragons are the only supporting cast, so they were called for.

Pocohontas was unwatchable for me because it was too far removed from historical accuracy. Shortly after it was originally released, I remember seeing an ad for it in the paper around July 4th with a blatant attempt to show the movie was somehow connected to patriotism and such which even further removed it from historical accuracy -- included was a pic of Pocohontas in a canoe, and on the front of the canoe waved the 13-star American flag which Betsy Ross didn't create until over 100 years later.

Actually, Betsy Ross didn't create the 1st US flag. It's a common misconception created by her descendants! But I did like Pocahontas. Sorry you didn't.

i have read with great interest this thread.

I love animation, so disney films, why some story lines or musical numbers may leave me cold, always hold interest and joy for me.

that said, i was hugley dissapointed by treasure planet and atlantis. some parts of those aforementioned movies i did really like, eg. kidas design and the subtle humor of a few characters.

Whether Ross did or didn't create the flag isn't the point. Disney shouldn't have used the flag in attempt to market the movie as having relevance to the 4th of July. Nor should they have taken so many liberties in their portrayal of the historic records of Pocohontas.

And don't even get me started on that gosh-awful sequel, which IMO is the worst sequel Disney has made to date.

Nor should they have taken so many liberties in their portrayal of the historic records of Pocohontas.
seriously, disney marketed that film as 'based on a legend'

pocahontas was an inflated story by john smith which he used at social events and the like to make him more sympathetic to the ladies. A young 'savage' girl saving him, very heroic, very poetic, makes him sound dashing and sensitive. when he met pocahontas again he even denied it had happened as he was 'embarrassed' at the way he had twisted the original truths of the story.

Disney never claimed they were making a historic film- yes, they tried to keep things accuarate- design of the village, names, the language (when used) and the boats, themes. they all held strong and true.

if we had a historic pocahontas it wouldnt have made it to theatres would it? who would watch a 9 year old naked girl with short cropped black hair running around a bunch of settlers? who would identify with a self centred lead, who was short, squat, bearded and known for having a fond likeness for the alcamahol.

if u hold pocahontas up for not being 'historically accuarte' then what about hunchback? i didnt see the quasi attacks esmeralda scene that was in the original story- what about tarzan? where are the giant creatures he battled, where are his chimps!!

it is unfair to lambast a film when it is clearly stated that it is about a legend. so what if they used the flag in ONE ad- u see weeping and crying statues of liberty posters every anniversary of 911. do u go around boycotting that?

pocahontas stands for great things, overcoming predujice, finding your own path, breaking the mould and taking responsibility for yourself.
put it into perspective.
