And we’ll probably know WHY and what made him want to murder him in the movie.

Hence why this is about how they became the way they were in the original.

I am waiting for critic reviews. Ever since LMM was announced, my interest has been piqued. I’ll go see it if it has decent reviews. And maybe even if it doesn’t— my family wants to see it just based on trailers.

I actually enjoyed both of TLK's DTV sequels. I'd love to hear new versions of "We Are One," "Not One of Us," and "Love Will Find a Way." Hopefully Mufasa succeeds so those two will get made someday.

This movie is the first Disney movie to have an original Love Duet since Tangled. Not counting cut songs like Desert Moon from Aladdin remake, repurposed songs like At All Costs from Wish or subverted "love songs" like Love is an Open Door from Frozen.

I guess Disney is fine with romances if it doesn't involve a Princess.

The soundtrack is already available in some territories. Here are links to the songs, although, unless you have a VPN, they'll only work in places where it's already Friday. Some of them, of course, may contain spoilers, especially the last ones I suppose.

Ngomso
Milele
I Always Wanted A Brother
Bye Bye
We Go Together
Tell Me It's You
Brother Betrayed

The tracklist for the Deluxe Edition has been revealed too and it's going to be released at the same time as the regular soundtrack. Here are also the lyrics, for anyone interested.

Well I’ve seen Disney’s #MufasaTheLionKing. So here’s what I can tell you about it in my spoiler-free review/reaction:

IMO, Barry Jenkins cooked and succeeded in making this film the way he wanted, with more wins than losses.

You can see his sensibilities of how he made his previous movies with this movie in specific shots when they come up. Its cinematography, lighting and color grading have more life to it than what we got with Jon Favreau’s cash grab that is the 2019 remake of The Lion King. And just as I still believed, they managed to succeed in ensuring the animal characters would be fully expressive and show emotions this time.

The cast also did a really good job w/ their vocal performances, even Aaron Pierre who, as a man who is faced with living up to the legacy of the legend James Earl Jones (R.I.P. friend), strongly nailed Mufasa as he goes on his path to destiny of going from orphan to king. Kelvin Harrison Jr. also nailed the role of Taka and his downfall into becoming who we all know as Scar. And they did a real good job with the voices of young Sarabi (Tiffany Boone), young Zazu, and young Rafiki (the latter who sounds more closer to how Rafiki sounded in the original 1994 Lion King in some parts). Though no disrespect to John Kani, he’s still strong as present day Rafiki. Plus, the duo of Billy Eichner & Seth Rogen as Timon & Pumbaa still manages to be very funny when we flip back and forth to the present day scenes when Rafiki tells the story of Mufasa and Taka/Scar to Kiara, with those scenes getting the most laughs from my audience, along w/ some scenes from Zazu.

In terms of the new/new-ish characters for this movie, Mads Mikkelsen did a good job in the role of the relentless and very power-hungry Kiros. But in terms of the new characters who stole the show and were the heart of this movie, those honors would go to Blue Ivy Carter as the voice of Kiara, daughter of Simba & Nala, and Disney Legend/Disney Princess Anika Noni Rose (Tiana of #ThePrincessAndTheFrog) herself as Afia, the mother of Mufasa (the heart of the movie and the driving force of Mufasa’s journey in the movie). Also Keith David (Dr. Facilier of The Princess and the Frog) voiced Mufasa’s father Masego, a Disney history deep cut I liked a lot.

In terms of the new songs Lin-Manuel Miranda made for this film, “I Always Wanted A Brother”, “Milele,” and “Bye Bye” were the strongest 3 of the movie, the latter of the 3 which is like if Mr. Miranda mixed “Trust In Me” from 1967’s Jungle Book with “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” from Encanto. The other songs after that including a duet between Sarabi and Mufasa are also good, but I gravitate more to the first 3 just because the first 2 feel more hopeful, upbeat, and very lullaby-ish. Plus as a Disney fan, I liked hearing the voices of Tiana and Facilier singing a duet as Mufasa’s parents, so guess I’m a sucker for that.

I will admit, as per usual with issues people have with prequel films, some explanations of a few details felt random, but I don’t think they’re as groan-causing as many felt with Solo: A Star Wars Story.

All in all, a solid film that is worthy of standing in the canon of The Lion King lore more than the 2019 remake was. In terms of ranking this in the hierarchy of the now 5 Lion King movies, it’d be #3, above Simba’s Pride, underneath Lion King 1 1/2 and the original 1994 Lion King.

Also, there will be tributes to the later James Earl Jones at the start of the movie and a tribute of special thanks to the crew behind Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original 1994 Lion King in the end credits of the film. And keep your eyes open for an Easter egg related to #TheLionGuard, too.

As much as I would’ve preferred seeing this film be hand-drawn animated like in the old days of Disney, I’m not gonna lie when I say this was a solid film.

Final rating for this film… I’m gonna give it 4 out of 5 lion roars. 🦁🦁🦁🦁

The reviews are in and the Rotten Tomatoes score is not off to a good start:

I'm glad you liked the movie, though, D23ExpoVisitor25. The three songs you mentioned are my favorites from the soundtrack as well. And it's nice that they included a tribute to the original animated film. By the way, are there any end credit scenes?

Saw this last night. It was improvement over the first one in every way imaginable (there are no dung beetles rolling turds here!), but the movie still suffers from script issues and the animals still look strange and don't move quite right, and any suspension of disbelief is lost the moment they open their mouths. They do emote better this time!

The movie, as you probably know by now, is an origin story for all the characters you know from the original (and the ~original~ original). Seriously, ALL the characters. Even Pride Rock gets an origin story.

The songs are good within the context of the movie and I enjoyed them, but they're not earworms like any of the old ones and for the life of me I can't recall any of them now. I find LMM's style to be a hit-or-miss, so it could just be me. I'll have to listen to the soundtrack on its own, but I'm in no rush to do it.

The movie did make me feel bad for Scar, but I don't know if that's something to this movie's advantage or disadvantage. Definitely paints him as more of a tragic figure than a full-on villain, even though his heel turn feels a bit sudden.

I didn't find Timon and Pumbaa grating, they even managed to get a few chuckles out of me. Your mileage may vary though.

I liked that it incorporated or referenced all previous TLK canon, even The Lion Guard. Kind of makes me sad this wasn't made in the 1990s, it would have made for a better, tighter movie then.

Well, probably the most interesting thing about this one was that it was the rare remake that managed to land somewhere in the middle. Neither inspired nor excruciating.

The character motivations were a bit limp. I can't believe that the thing that ultimately turned Taka/Scar was Sarabi choosing Mufasa over him. The whole thing was very 8th grade.

Mufasa uniting all of The Pride Land like that at the end also felt left-field to me. I guess you could argue that this was somehow foreshadowed by Mufasa assembling this cross-species task force across the film, but even then, that wasn't really framed as a mark of Mufasa's virtue or character so much as the plot specifically outlining that these animals were not on the menu because they become important in the next movie.

My favorite song was probably Mufasa and Sarabi's love duet, but I also felt like the song petered out before it really hit its stride. None of the other songs really made an impression on me.

Some of the visuals were pretty.

Other than that, I think my favorite bit was hearing Anika again.

I was confused at why they decided that Mufasa would see his mother again but not his father. Like, why go in halfway like that?
