I don't think P&P are great for a musical ethersince they write music more along the lines of pop radio--I by far prefer the story-driven, straight Broadway sound of Menken or the Lopezes--but I definitely would take P&P over Miranda, Newman, or Michaels... At least I would use most of what they come up with, despite it being ill-fitting as musical theater.

No no no no. I will not take any Randy Newman slander here, especially since his music and songs in The Princess and the Frog are a lot better than people give it credit for.Disney's Divinity wrote: โFri Dec 06, 2024 7:18 pm I don't think P&P are great for a musical ethersince they write music more along the lines of pop radio--I by far prefer the story-driven, straight Broadway sound of Menken or the Lopezes--but I definitely would take P&P over Miranda, Newman, or Michaels... Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
But "Under the Sea" is calypso that doesn't tell you what time period, the 19th century, or setting, Denmark, the movie is in. Neither does the cabaret "Poor Unfortunate Souls". Or "Kiss the Girl". Or "Part of Your World". Maybe "Be Our Guest" sounds French, but not the rest of that film's songs. Only "Arabian Nights" sounds Arabian. And the genre? It's all Broadway. Like Pasek & Paul is all pop. And P&P totally can write for character and story, as Dear Evan Hansen showed, to me. I agree they make great, memorable tunes.Sotiris wrote: โFri Dec 06, 2024 1:45 pmPasek & Paul are not ideal musical material. They have trouble writing for character and context or adapting their style and sound depending on the assignment. This results in their work sounding similar and feeling interchangeable. You can never tell the time period or the setting or the genre of the film their songs are supposed to belong to. You could easily pluck "Waiting on a Wish" out of Snow White and put it in The Greatest Showman or Dear Evan Hansen and it would fit right in.
Having said that, their songs are admittedly catchy. Unlike other similar-type songwriters in this space, they can consistently produce memorable, albeit familiar, tunes. That's why they've been so successful.

I think the main song sounds great, yes it's a song that could fit in any movie but still it's catchy
And who cares if Rachel hates trump and his supporters? In Spain most people hate/dislike trump and think he's a lunatic, same for Europe in general

The Little Mermaid was not set in Denmart, just because the writer was from Denmark doesn't mean the movie was, it was set in the Mediterranean according to Disney itself, near Italy coastDisney Duster wrote: โFri Dec 06, 2024 10:18 pmBut "Under the Sea" is calypso that doesn't tell you what time period, the 19th century, or setting, Denmark, the movie is in. Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
Patrick Page is inspired casting. Maybe he'll get to sing along with Gadot in The Evil Queen's song.
I'd agree that, yeah, P&P write radio hits first, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. That's how musicals have been for most of their lifetime, and they are very good at what they do.

And someone noticed Snow White's mother also appears in the trailer alongside her and the king in what looks like a musical number:

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I agree. I was surprised by it, as Disney standees don't tend to be that creative. They also chose good poses of Snow White and the Queen, in my opinion. The Disneynerd wrote: โSun Dec 08, 2024 12:50 pm Not a fan but WOW the dwarfs holding the Poster is actually extremely clever! Thats actually cool

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I wonder if the clever choice to have the dwarves hold up the standee was to hide their uncanny valley looks (even though I argue Dopey is the only one who looks decent and was done justice).
Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I had that thought too. Who knows, perhaps that's the reason they had to be creative. Either way, I really liked that standee.

Her narcisism and entitlement are just astonishing.
I really don't understand why she can't just take responsibility for her attitude and start thinking before posting anything online.
I genuinely don't care if she hates Trump or not, she can have whatever opinion she wants. My point is she wished that people who voted for him would never know peace. During a period where she should promote her movie, and make the public look forward to it. When the movie fails, she'll be like "oh, it's because I'm a Latina woman".Pokenonbinary wrote: โSat Dec 07, 2024 3:59 am

Iโve never understood people who think insulting half their audience (deplorables, garbage, may they never know peace, etc.) is a good thing.

Ron and Jon did say they intended to make Eric's castle look Mediterranean, but that is all I remember hearing that possibly sets it there. Where did you hear it was set near Italy? I think I heard the Mediterranean castle thing on the Platinum making-of. Some people still say it is set in Denmark, and that maybe just Eric's castle and some of his kingdom are made to look Mediterranean, but I will acquiesce to you that maybe it is set in the Mediterranean. I still am curious to know if you remember where they said the film is really set near Italy.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
Here's an blog post I found when we were talking about this topic in The Little Mermaid live-action thread, which I finally never posted. I don't know if all of it is accurate or not, but it's true that the palm trees or the flamingos, among other things, suggest the animated film has a Mediterranean setting.
Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
It is set in the Mediterranean. It was confirmed in the Disney Princess book (and perhaps other places before it):
viewtopic.php?p=747466&hilit=Mediterranean#p747466
And here there's a website that suggests that Eric's kingdom was inspired by Dubrovnik, but I haven't seen any confirmation about it. I don't think they had a specific city or county in mind:

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I was wrong! Pokenonbinary was right! Thanks D82 and Farerb. Google's top answers about it seem to be wrong, too. I was also wrong that the calypso "Under the Sea" did not suggest the 19th century, as it was invented in that century. However, calypso is Caribbean, not Mediterranean or Italian.

Re: Snow White (Live-Action)
I don't think most Disney films are set in an extremely specific place barring something like B&tB which uses French accents and so on. I think the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Denmark are all a part of TLM to a degree. *shrug*
