I imagined they'd submit "Beyond," but I didn't expect them to submit Maui's song as well. Now I'm a bit more curious about it. "You're Welcome" is my favorite song from the original, but for some reason, I didn't have much faith "Can I Get a Chee Hoo?" would be very good. Does the article say Rachel House also sings in "Beyond"? If so, most likely it won't be heard during the first act as I thought, but later in the movie.

Speaking of the songs, according to another recent article from The Hollywood Reporter which was deleted but can still be read here, the film will include five new original songs. In this interview, though, co-director Dana Ledoux Miller says there are six. Perhaps, she's counting the end credit song as well, for example, if there is one? Still, that's less than what the first film had. I guess we already know what all of them are then: "We're Back," "Can I Get a Chee Hoo?," "Beyond," the song about Moana's crew and Matangi's song.

And for some reason I`m optimistic about the new songs, despite how it`s really remarkable how Lin-Manuel Miranda haven`t been involved to compose them.

Yeah, it's a shame he didn't return for this. That's one of the consequences of turning the series into a film. If it had been a movie from the beginning, I think he would have been the composer. But yes, hopefully Barlow & Bear have done a good job too. Here's another interview with them, though they don't reveal much new about Moana 2 there, but talk more about their working process or their past collaborations.

It's interesting that they continue presenting Matangi as a big villain with things like the title of that TV spot "Big, Bad Matangi" or the tagline "Matangi > Lava Monster" on social media. If, as we suspect, she turns out not to be what they're promising, some people might be disappointed. The TV spot didn't show more of her than previous ones, by the way. And why do they keep using that same line from her? Is that the only villainous thing she says in the movie? It's not even that menacing, as it could be interpreted as an advice. Plus, I watched the last trailer in other languages and in one of them she says "Nalo will destroy you" instead of "you will be destroyed," which reveals she's not threatening to destroy her herself.

Do they usually announce the tickets are going to be on sale beforehand? I'm more used to them announcing it the day they actually go on sale. By the way, that promo features yet another shot in which Matangi seems to be helping Moana. Though, I guess, she could also be pretending to be a friend at first, for example.

This movie's coin is still mostly in the air for me, but I did like that little snippet of "Beyond." Auli'i's voice has definitely matured, and I appreciate that they're capitalizing on that. I'll have to get a better sample of the lyrics to gauge where it lands on the totem pole.

I've said before that it's a shame they didn't do whatever they had to do to get Lin to work on this project too, even if it was originally "just a tv series," but I'm also holding out hope for this new team, not in the least because I think the world would be better for seeing more women succeed in this field, and this is as good an opportunity as any. I don't even need it to be the best music Disney's ever done (right now, the benchmark it needs to clear is the nonsense of WISH's soundtrack), but if it could land along the lines of Tangled--not the top trophy, but like I'll smile if I hear it in line at Disneyland--I could count that as a win.

If what the Slashfilm article said is true and that Moana 2’s success may mean other projects starting off for series as Disney+ turn into movies, let’s hope Moana 2’s success turns Tiana from a Paperman-style animated series to a fully 2D/hand-drawn theatrical sequel to The Princess and the Frog for a theatrical release in 2029.

This may be our only chance to make that happen.

Sneak peek of the song "Beyond" in Japanese. The song's quite lackluster. It feels aimless and structureless and lacks a catchy, memorable tune. Trying to weave "I Am Moana" into it was a mistake too. The line felt jarring and out of place from the rest of the song.

So far, the music in the sequel pales to that of the original (and it wasn't that a high bar to begin with). The music in this definitely has a DTV quality to it. It's serviceable, but humdrum and unimpressive. Maybe it's because the songwriters are so young and inexperienced.
