I'm not expecting high praise for it, but when I was a kid I was a huge fan of the book's sequels, and wonder how closely it could possibly follow either of them due to the differences between the original book and the Bluth film (like the fates of Nicodemus and especially Jenner).

I've been tempted to buy the DVD a handful of times but wasn't sure it would be worth the $5. :p
I've seen the DTV sequel. It is awful. Here's a well-written essay dissecting the movie I found a few years ago:

Thanks! Like I said, I wasn't expecting high praise, but yikes. I wasn't even expecting nice animation but a decent story would have been nice, lol. It's disappointing that there's no Rasco but with Jenner dead I guess that makes sense. And they turned Martin into a villain?

I just ordered The Secret of NIMH on Blu-ray from Amazon.com, where the price has dropped to $10.49 (plus I had a $5 credit).

Even though I am a bit worried about the picture quality, I'll take the chance for a little over $5. I really like animation on Blu-ray, and this release should at the very least be an improvement over the DVD version.

Eureka! Entertainment has revealed a new Masters of Cinema Blu-ray title for release in the UK on December 9, Don Bluth’s animated The Secret of NIMH (1982)! Limited to just 2K copies, the disc will include new and archival audio commentaries, and multiple new and legacy featurettes, along with a booklet featuring a new essay on the film by Peter C.
