Dean Wellins Left Disney

Post by Sotiris »

Dean Wellins left Disney in July 2022 after working at the studio for 22 years. He first joined WDAS in August 2000 and worked as an animator on Treasure Planet and The Princess and the Frog. He also worked as a story artist on Chicken Little, Bolt, Tangled, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Zootopia, Moana, and Ralph Breaks the Internet. He directed the short Tick Tock Tale and episodes 1, 2, and 6 of the short-form series Baymax! He tried numerous times to direct a feature film at the studio to no avail. He got replaced on Tangled and Raya and his Cosmic 3000 film was cancelled. In 2020, it was announced he was directing a feature at the studio, but that project either got cancelled or he was replaced again. Currently, he works at Sergio Pablos Animation as a director on an unannounced feature.

Aw, that's sad he never got to really lead a film at WDAS. At least he's a director elsewhere now. Hopefully good things in the future for him at least.

I admit I don't know that much about him to really have much thought on whether he was great or not though; if he was replaced on Tangled, was his version of Tangled the Rapunzel Unbraided one then? I think that's the one that followed Glen Keane's version being scrapped, before the official one began.

He was assigned as Glen Keane's co-director on the version after Unbraided, but before Tangled.
